Certified organic cropland more than doubled from 1992 to 1997, and two organic livestock sectorseggs and dairygrew even faster. ERS recently analyzed data from State and private certification groups to calculate the extent of certified organic farmland acreage and livestock in the United States( U.S. Organic Farming Emerges in the 1990s: Adoption of Certified Systems Farmers in 49 States dedicated 1.3 million acres of farmland to organic production systems in 1997. Two-thirds of the farmland was used for growing crops, with Idaho, California, North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Iowa the top producing States ( table 3 ). Colorado and Alaska had the largest amount of organic pasture and rangeland. Nearly half the States were raising certified organic livestock (
