    Extractions: The Department offers three optional fields. The business option prepares students for careers in businesses related to agronomy. The science option is designed for students who plan to pursue graduate work. The general option is designed for students who desire a more general plan of study. By the beginning of the sophomore year, the student should have selected the preferred option.     Extractions: Degree Program Area of Concentration Plant and Soil Systems (PLSYS) Through the plant and soil systems curriculum, the Department of Agronomy prepares you for the challenges of today's world, including preparation in several different areas of agronomic education. You will follow a basic curriculum, regardless of the area of concentration, during most of your first two years at LSU. In the third year, you will select courses from the specific area of concentration you wish to pursue. Courses in this department provide you with a knowledge of scientific crop production and soil management. Although achieving high crop yields will always be an aim of any agronomic course, today's world situation demands that this be accomplished in an environmentally safe manner. Crops courses not only stress minimizing yields, but also emphasize disease and insect control by means other than relying on heavy use of chemical pesticides. Soils courses are designed to teach the basics of sound management practices; they also strongly stress the new needs of a changing world. Emphasis is placed on a minimum fertilizer application, soil conservation by minimum-till or no-till methods, pesticide and heavy metal leaching in our soils, plus microbial and chemical studies on decomposition of chemicals and toxins. All of the agronomy courses also prepare you to pursue a graduate degree. You may choose to remain at LSU for graduate study or enroll at another university.

Areas studied within the Crop Management major include plant breeding and genetics, crop physiology, crop production and management, weed science, seed production technology, and soil fertility.
