The 1990 census placed the population of the state at 4,319,200 people. However, the history of the area goes back another 300 years. The first known European contact with what would become Alabama occurred in 1519 when Alonso Alvarez de Pineda sailed in Mobile Bay. The Spanish did not really explore the area for another two decades, when Hernando de Soto led an expedition into the region about 1540. Conflict between the Spanish and local Indian tribes, as well as French and English explorers, kept the Spanish from establishing a colony, and in 1702 the French established Fort Louis, the first permanent European presence, near present day Mobile. In 1763 the Treaty of Paris, which ended the French and Indian War, gave Mobile to the British and established British supremacy in the area. Montgomery was named permanent state capital in 1846, and it was there in January 1861 that the Ordinance of Secession was passed, forming the Confederate States of America. Montgomery was named as the capital of the fledgling nation and Jefferson Davis became the first president of the Confederacy. Admiral Farragut's blockade of Mobile Bay in August of 1864, coupled with Sherman's march to the sea in Georgia cut off the two major seaports of the Confederacy and harkened the end of the bloodiest conflict in American history.

Across Alabama's Black Belt on Highway 80 Called the Black Belt because of its rich, dark soil, the area of south Alabama traversed by Highway 80 on its route across the southern U.S. was the staging ground for some of Alabama's most significant moments in history. It was here that DeSoto met Tuscaloosa, cotton plantations flourished, the Confederacy was born, and civil rights were won. Follow Highway 80 through Demopolis, Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee on a journey through Alabama history. Remembering the revolt on the slave ship AMISTAD more than a century and a half after it took place. The coalition of abolitionists and attorneys that was formed to exonerate the imprisoned Africans led to the founding of the American Missionary Association. In turn, this group established many schools for blacks, including Talladega College. The show will also visit the Amistad Research Center in New Orleans, a manuscript library for the study of ethnic history and culture.

    Extractions: Chocolocco Creek is also a tribute to their presence and named for another local chief. This creek runs through the south end of the city and at last survey was just one foot too short to be called a river. Another local attraction associated with the Muskogee and Conchardee is the Sleeping Giant. Although best seen from atop Mt. Cheaha, the Sleeping Giant can be seen in the distance on Alabama Highway 77 heading south out of Lincoln. The Sleeping Giant is really just a collection of foothills that, when seen from a distance, resemble a huge man sleeping on the horizon. There is, of course, a legend associated with the Sleeping Giant During the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson and his men camped at Fort Strother on the banks of the Coosa River near Ten Islands, just north of Lincoln. They arrived at the fort with no supplies and foraged for food over a wide area. The Lincoln area was noted by these men to have a good supply of fresh water and fertile land and many came back after the war was over to settle the area. Andrew Jackson also cut a trail through Lincoln on his way to Talladega for the Battle of Talladega. This battle took place on what is now known as Battle Street in the heart of Talladega. This battle was between the Red Sticks, a sect of the "Creeks" opposed to white control, and Andrew Jackson's men. Since then, the trail has been paved and is now known as Jackson Trace Road, part of it running parallel to the Talladega Super Speedway.
