"Cowtown" to fans and detractors alike) is located in the south-western part of the province. Calgary is home to the world-famous "Calgary Exhibition and Stampede," and is ideally situated in the province for use as a "base" to explore the natural, cultural, and historic wonders of Alberta . Home to much of the Canadian oil and gas industry, Calgary is a vibrant modern city filled with skyscrapers and modern amenities. The city has taken care to ensure that numerous "green" areas are easily accessible, combining the best of both worlds. The City of Calgary Municipal Handbook - Online on the City of Calgary website provides extensive information on Calgary's history, economy and government. The City of Calgary has a population of roughly 850,000, and lies at an altitude of 1,049m. The weather in Calgary varies quite dramatically, from lows reaching -40C (albeit rarely) in the winter, to highs in excess of 30C in the summer. Calgary is subject to periodic "chinook winds" of warm air from the mountains during the winter which can cause the temperature to rise by more than 15C in just a few hours. The human history of the Calgary region begins, as with all Alberta, with the native Canadians, over 12,000 years ago. The cultures which existed during the arrival of the European traders and settlers were the Blackfoot, Sarcee and Stoney. The first Europeans included David Thompson and Peter Fidler in the 1780's and 1790's, both of whom were associated with the fur trade.

Extractions: Alberta: History and People History: The Aboriginal people, the Piegan, Cree, Blackfoot, Blood, Gros Ventre, Sarcee, Kootenay, Beaver and Slavey Indians, speaking a variety of Athapaskan and Algonkian languages, were the first people to live in what is now Alberta. They inhabited a vast wilderness territory, living nomadically hunting and trapping and foraging the rich natural resources of the land. The woodland tribes of the central and northern regions, became partners of the European fur traders who arrived in the 18th century. The first European to reach what is now Alberta was Anthony Henday in 1754, although the land was claimed by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670. Peter Pond, of the North West Company, established the first fur-trading post in 1778. The rival Hudson's Bay Company built competing fur-trading posts over the next century and a half. The rivalry ended in 1821, when the two companies merged. Interest in colonization of the west increased in Britain after the American Civil War. In 1867 with the passage of the British North America Act (BNA) and the establishment of the Dominion of Canada the new Canadian Government acquired the North West Territories, including present day Alberta from the Hudson's Bay Company.

Extractions: The first Canada Games were held in Quebec City in 1967 as a Centennial project. Since then, at two-year intervals, 16 more ceremonial torches have been ignited to signal the start of the Canada Games. An estimated 55,000 young Canadians have participated in the Games, with hundreds of thousands of athletes engaged in tryouts and qualifying events. Over 110,000 volunteers have been directly involved in the planning and staging of the Games. Cumulatively, over $280 million has been invested in the Canada Games since their inception, about half of it in capital projects. From track and field complexes to ski hills, soccer pitches to swimming pools, a legacy of facilities has been built up in 15 communities across Canada. Perhaps as important as the facility legacy is the human legacy. With experience gained from the Canada Games, volunteers have gone on to assume other important roles in their communities. They have left an imprint of giving and sharing which no amount of concrete or money can match.

EdmontonTourism Contact Us The city of Calgary has only been incorporated since 1904, but it is estimated that the Bow River Valley has been inhabited for the last 10,000 years. At the end of the last Ice Age, the ancestors of the present-day native tribes made their way across the Bering Sea from Siberia, traveling down through Alaska before settling in the Rocky Mountain foothills. There they formed the Blackfoot, Sarcee, Blood, Stoney and Shagganapi nations, and subsisted on the seasonal migrations of American buffalo herds. The ir way of life remained relatively unchanged until the late 1870s, when Europeans hunted the buffalo to near-extinction. With the buffalo gone, the natives began trapping beaver and other fur-bearing mammals for the Hudson's Bay and North-West Trading companies, who set up trading posts in the Bow Valley and at Rocky Mountain House to the northwest. The local furs were especially prized by designers in Paris and New York for their richness and quality, and commanded high prices from the traders.
