Extractions: Introducing Algae and Seaweed With algae, we leap into the realm of chlorophyll producing plants that enters into the reciprocal relationship of life with the human being. For green plants algae being the most rudimentary form produce the oxygen that sustains the human being and the animal kingdom. The mushrooms and fungi do not do this. The reciprocal relationship is found in the expelled carbon dioxide from the breath of human being and animals; this exhaled gas sustains the green plant. Though algae helps to supply the air and water with oxygen, when it grows very thick on the surface of a pond, it actually serves to cut off the oxygen to the water and kill the life below. Such thick algal blooms are often stimulated by the intrusion of sewage and fertilizer run off -human pollution. Main Lesson Activity Following the teacher's presentation, have the student write a summarized account of algae and seaweed into his lesson book, (similar to Writing/Dictation exercise no. 4) placing the greater emphasis on the seaweed. On the accompanying page, the student can draw an illustration of some forms of seaweed such as kelp or bladder wrack, or the sample of red seaweed seen above. Main Lesson Activity There are beds of kelp that float like green islands upon the sea along the California coast. A tiny ecosystem is formed there, and the principle inhabitant is the sea otter. He feeds on the shellfish that adhere to the kelp and the creature often wraps itself in the kelp to make a floating bed. The kelp forest helps to hide the otter from predators like the shark. Find out more information on this topic of the creatures of the kelp forest especially the life of the otter. The student can write a short story on the day in the life of Willy Otter.

Extractions: The United States National Herbarium was founded in 1848, when the first collections were accessioned from the United States Exploring Expedition (50,000 specimens of 10,000 species). Current holdings total 4.5 million specimens, making this collection among the ten largest in the world representing about 8% of the plant collection resources of the United States. The herbarium is especially rich in type specimens The collection encompasses all major groups of plants (bryophytes, ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms) as well as algae (esp. marine algae and diatoms) and lichens . The fungi were transferred to the National Fungus Collection (BPI). The scope of the collection is worldwide, but with special strengths in the neotropics, North America, Pacific oceanic islands, the Philippines, and the Indian subcontinent. Extractions: Laboratory 6: Silurian-Devonian: Origin of Land Plants and Early Land Plants I. Early Land Plants During this laboratory we will look at evidence for the earliest land plants. Some of these forms are thought to represent early "experiments" in land plant structure that have no living descendents (e.g., Prototaxites Protosalvinia ). Other plants we will look at are probably the ancestors of today's land plants. While some of them are true vascular plants, others (e.g., the Aglaophyton Lyonphyton plant) seem to occupy a transitional zone between non-vascular and true vascular plants. We will then look at the diversification of early vascular plants into two major later groups, the trimerophytes ( Psilophyton Pertica ) and the zosterophylls (e.g., Sawdonia ). These are the groups from which, presumably, all the other vascular plants evolved.. 1. Problematic plants a. Protosalvinia Protosalvinia consists of a small, sometimes forking thallus around 3 to 5 mm wide. These forking structures are always broken off at the base, so we don't know how large of a plant produced them. Embedded within the surfaces of the thallus are small cavities or pockets that contain tetrads of spores around 250 um in diameter (see p. 65 of the text). These structures have been thought by some to be very similar to the reproductive structures of the Phaeophyta, or brown algae.

Algae are ubiquitous; they inhabit almost everywhere including oceans, freshwater bodies, rocks, soils, and trees. Man's uses of algae may date back to ancient times. In recent decades, there has been renewed interest in the utilization of algae as sources of health food and high-value chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and for aquaculture, agriculture, and wastewater treatment. Nevertheless, the biotechnological potential of algae is still far from fully exploited, due to a lack of understanding of algal characteristics and culture systems, as well as of advanced research techniques. This book contains selected papers presented at the Fourth Asia-Pacific Conference on Algal Biotechnology held in Hong Kong, on 3-6 July, 2000. Written by experts in the field, this book provides a state-of-the-art account of algal biotechnology research.
