Although dental amalgam is the single largest source of mercury exposure for average Canadians, current evidence does not indicate that dental amalgam is causing illness in the general population. Am 23. Dezember 1990 hatte die Sendung "60 Minutes" des amerikanischen Senders CBS-TV mit der Verkündung über eine Invasion von Giftstoffen in amerikanischen Mündern eine ähnliche Wirkung. Allerdings gab es da einen gewaltigen Unterschied. Welles Sendung war als Unterhaltung gedacht. Die von dem erfahrenen Reporter Morley Safer geleitete "60 Minutes"-Sendung sollte dagegen die Zuschauer alarmieren und davon überzeugen, daß das Quecksilber in Zahnfüllungen ein Gift sei. Dies war der unverantwortlichste Bericht über ein Gesundheitsthema, der jemals von einem Fernsehsender ausgestrahlt wurde. Quecksilber ist ein Bestandteil von Amalgam, das für "Silber"-Füllungen verwendet wird. Die übrigen wesentlichen Komponenten sind Silber, Zinn, Kupfer und Zink. Werden diese Elemente miteinander vermischt, bilden sie eine stabile, widerstandsfähige Verbindung. Hochempfindliche Geräte können ein Milliardstel Gramm Quecksilberdampf im Mund eines Amalgamträgers nachweisen. Die winzige Menge Quecksilber, die der Körper aus dem Amalgam aufnimmt, ist jedoch weit unter dem Grenzwert, der irgendwelche negative Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit haben kann [1-5]. Ein ausführlicher, 1993 vom amerikanischen Gesundheitsamt, dem "Department of Health and Human services", veröffentlichter Bericht kam zu dem Schluß, daß "es kaum Beweise dafür gibt, daß die große Mehrheit von Amalgamträgern gesundheitlich beeinträchtigt wird, oder daß das Entfernen von Füllungen positive Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit hat." [6].
