The soft rolling hills, lush green valley and fertile farmlands lie within a quick hour north of Philadelphia. To the weary big city dweller, or the cross-country traveler, this region is a paradox of time and scenery. In the summer, you may cool yourself in the breezes of a lazy canoe ride down the Lehigh Canal. In the fall, you might find yourself wandering happily through a giant maze that a local farmer has carved into his cornfield. The winters are storybook scenes of snowy hills teeming with clusters of happy skiers. In addition to its pleasant diversions, this region is also known for its productivity in agriculture as well as in industry and technology. Traveling down the modern streets of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, you may be unaware of the important role the Lehigh Valley and its residents have played in the desperate struggle that carved this nation from a baker’s dozen of disjointed colonies. This guide can be used to identify full-text information online, books, newspaper and periodical articles, and encyclopedia entries on this topic. This annotated listing of recommended African-American Web sites was prepared by Elna L. Saxton and Joe McClamroch, and published in the January, 1999 issue of College and Research Libraries News (vol. 60, no. 1). Goodnow House - Isaac Goodnow was a leader in the free-state movement and founder of the college which became Kansas State University. Grinter Place - Moses Grinter traded with the Delaware before building this brick farmhouse in 1862. Moses and Annie Grinter, a Delaware, farmed, raised poultry and livestock, in Kansas City.

Many of these are sacred places, containing the graves of our ancestors. Thousands of these places have been destroyed in the past, and those that still exist face a growing threat of destruction from looters digging for Indian artifacts and increasingly intense real estate development. Many people feel that this is the most pressing issue in Tennessee Indian affairs. Desecration of Indian burials is a brutal violation of the spiritual existence of the living as well as the dead. And each site lost represents a part of our culture that is gone forever - once they are bulldozed over, once the burial sites are desecrated, we can never recover that part of our heritage. Tennessee's Indian people have waged a constant battle against this loss for well over the last decade. The Alliance for Native American Indian Rights was formed in Nashville in 1989 to fight plans for a city owned landfill in an area covered with Native historical sites and burial grounds and has continued efforts to protect other sacred sites in the state (Native Nashville sponsors the group's web site). There are other groups across the state with similar missions. And unfortunately, this issue is not unique to Tennessee - Indian people all over North and South America have struggled against the destruction and desecration of their sacred places for the last 500 years. The struggle continues today, from Canada to Chile.
