Extractions: Uppsala University English is the single most important language in the world. It is the native language of some 350 million people and a second language for hundreds of millions more. As a foreign language it is used daily by billions of people all over the world. But English is so much more than a language. At the Uppsala University Department of English students study not only a language and literature but also learn to place English in its linguistic, historical, cultural, and social contexts. Most of our students study English full time, taking 20 credits each term. The general A-term curriculum combines language training with courses dealing with American and British history of ideas, society, and literature. English is the medium of virtually all instruction at the Department. Roughly one third of all A-level students go on to the second term, or B level , and half of those take one of the C-level courses, , including a degree project, or , without such a project. At the B and C levels, students can pursue in greater depth their studies of language, literature, and social studies. A smaller number go on to our
