For the new order Amish, religion is based on a firm belief in their church, community, and family. Any technology which threatens the strength of these institutions is often banned from use. The Amish farmer I visited used tractors, dishwashers and automatic milkers did not have a car. The reasoning behind this seemingly contradictory stance is that a car would allow members of the family easy access off the farm. Thinking of my family's hectic life of school, sports and work - everyone going different places all at the same time, I understand the Amishmen's reasoning.

At this time, things could not have been better, financially or emotionally. That fall, in September, Amanda, my mother, gave birth to a beautiful little baby girl. The pregnancy had gone so well that she decided to give birth at home with an Amish midwife. At this point in time, my parents were very happy and content, however, soon it would all change. In January of 1956, my mother became pregnant for the sixth time. This pregnancy appeared normal at first, but, she soon discovered that this pregnancy was different than the previous five. She noticed more weight gain than usual and more movement in her womb. Mother, a very petite woman, was somewhat concerned about this pregnancy. On October 12,1956, she went into labor with no idea of what lay ahead. Levi, her husband and my father, was very worried. Immediately, he hitched up the horse to the buggy and went to ask the Amish midwife to come over to deliver their sixth child. The midwife arrived that evening somewhere around eight o'clock. My mother tried time and again to deliver her sixth child that night. Shortly after lunchtime on the 13th of October, she began to give birth. The head of her baby boy appeared, but his shoulders were stuck in her womb. Amanda and her baby were barely hanging onto life. Frantically, my dad ran to an English neighbors house, knowing they had a telephone. For once, glad of such modern conveniences, as soon as he arrived at the door, he yelled, "Call the emergency squad I am about to lose my wife and unborn child." Within twenty minutes the emergency squad had arrived and were transporting mother to Orriville Hospital.

As you are aware, our child labor laws allow minors many opportunities for safe and appropriate employment. In tandem, our laws also prohibit minors under age 18 from employment in industries or with machinery that are hazardous, with high rates of occupational injuries. This year, we expect a bill to be reintroduced to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to permit Amish youth as young as 14 years old to be employed inside and outside places of business where machinery is used to process wood products (106 th Congress: H.R. 221). This would allow minors to work in sawmills and woodworking establishments, both of which are prohibited for minors under age 18 in Hazardous Occupation Orders 4 and 5. Although the proposed amendment requires that minors not operate the machinery, it allows minors to work in proximity to equipment in operation, raising concerns about minors being injured by projectiles such as nails, boards, and other materials. Such concerns prompted the Congress in 1938 to prohibit minors from working in sawmills and in woodworking establishments.
