Extractions: THE EUROPEAN ASSISTANCE FUND The European Assistance Fund (formerly Southern European Fund) was set up by Eurogroup to support member organisations in the EU's Southern Member States. In these countries animal welfare organisations generally have few resources. To facilitate the adoption of new or improved EU laws in the Council of Ministers , it is vital that the animal welfare movement there be given the means to work effectively. The European Assistance Fund provides funding, assistance and expertise to enable these organisations to participate in European campaigns and to achieve higher welfare standards in the EU. Main Projects Since it was set up in 1994 the fund has contributed to securing successes in terms of increased awareness, stricter European legislation on animal welfare issues and better enforcement of that legislation.
