Fort Apache Indian Reservation is the last living library of Native American culture, a tenuous distinction which exists only because Apaches won't touch something belonging to a dead person (because the spirit of the dead person may return for its property, and no one needs more strife in their life) and white people have had limited access to FAIR, so many things are just where their owners left them centuries ago. Below the wingtip of the vulture lies Kinishba, a pueblo ruin abandoned at least 50-years before Columbus discovered America. In the foreground, an Apache puberty rite for a young girl is being held along the banks of the White River, within walking distance of historic Fort Apache. In this land, Mother's Day for Mother Earth is every day of the year. The terrain varies from desert to mountain forests; an outdoor enthusiast can enjoy skiing and skinny-dipping on the same day, among an incredible variety of flora and fauna. To the greedy, Fort Apache Indian Reservation has always been "love at first sight". The Hollywood version of Fort Apache has little resemblance to the "academic" version, which has little resemblance to documents of the U.S.Army, Department of the Interior, and BIA ("Bossing Indians Around"), which have little resemblance to the version of "The People" now united as The White Mountain Apache Tribe.

Frank Lucas today announced that their legislation assisting Native American landowners in Oklahoma who wish to explore for oil, gas and minerals on their properties was signed into law by the President Wednesday, October 6. "This law will greatly benefit tribal landowners in Oklahoma," Inhofe said. "By revising the requirements needed for mineral development, tribes in Oklahoma will now be able to benefit from the resources they already own. This will greatly facilitate oil and gas exploration on tribal lands and help bring economic opportunities to the tribes." Lucas said, "Right now Native American landowners in Oklahoma and developers interested in leasing the mineral rights to their lands must wade through an arduous approval process. I am pleased, that with the support of the Oklahoma tribes involved, we were able to see this regulation changed." Current law requires 100 percent of the owners of mutually owned Native American land to give their consent before mineral exploration can occur on the property. However, these lands are often owned by over one hundred people, making it difficult to contact each of these owners.

    Extractions: INFECTIOUS DISEASE PREVENTION Johns Hopkins University has been Following the tremendous success of the ORT work, Dr. Santosham turned his attention to the devastating burden of illness and deaths among Navajo and Apache children from Haemophilus influenzae, type b (Hib) disease. A hallmark study undertaken by Dr. Santosham in the late 1980s and early 1990s proved the efficacy of a new vaccine to prevent serious illness due to (Hib). Prior to the development of this vaccine, meningitis, pneumonia, and bacteremia due to Hib were much more common among Navajo and Apache children than other children in the United States. Now, these diseases have been virtually eliminated in Native American communities. In 1991, following the Hib vaccine trial, Dr. Santosham founded the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health. The Center was created to provide a framework within which health issues of importance to American Indians could be addressed more broadly. The Center continues to work in the area of infectious diseases in addtion to other areas of need. The Center has recently completed a study of a new vaccine to prevent serious illness due to Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). Like Hib, pneumococcus disproportionately affected Navajo and Apache children. The new vaccine has led to substantial decreases in pneumococcal menintitis and other serious pneumococcal infections for Native American children. The Center continues to monitor the incidence of disease due to Haemophilus influenzae and pneumococcus and assesses the impact of the Hib and pneumococcal vaccines.

Native American is a fixed-wing and helicopter air medical transport service provider with its headquarters at the Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona. Native American is available for service 24-hours per day, each day, serving both American Indian and non-Indian patients. We began serving the southwestern regional health care industry in August of 1995, having flown tens of thousands of missions to date. Native American flew its first mission in August of 1995. On April 15, 1997, Native American was selected to provide exclusive fixed-wing and helicopter contract services to the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service at the White River and San Carlos Apache Service Unit Hospitals. We continue serving these two busy Service Unit Hospitals and expect that the contracts' scope will shortly be expanded. As of this writing, the result of a series of quarterly meetings between Native American and Phoenix Area IHS has culminated in the mutual agreement that there are no service-related issues concerning Native American's performance.
