The courses Elementary Arabic, Intermediate Arabic, and Advanced Arabic will be offered in two six-week sessions at the times indicated in the course listings below. The language of instruction, as well as for communication in the classroom and social activities, will be Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Opportunities to hear various versions of colloquial Arabic will also be provided. The Al-Kitaab textbook and accompanying tapes and videotapes, supplemented with authentic contemporary materials, will be used in both elementary and intermediate Arabic I and II. The supplemental material will include selections from medieval and modern Arabic texts as well as from current newspapers and magazines. State-of-the-art technology in the classroom will permit regular use of media such as tape recordings, videotapes, films, the Internet, the broadcasts received directly from numerous Middle Eastern stations. Advanced Arabic I and II will not use a textbook. Instead, the curriculum will evolve according to the needs and interests of the students. After reviewing the rules of grammar covered in elementary and intermediate Arabic, students will read portions of masterpieces of Arabic literature and authentic, unedited Arabic texts from a wide variety of sources.
