Extractions: Building a concrete career Coming into the 19th/20th century when India was ruled by the Britishers, many educational institutes in various professions had sprung up. Architecture too got a few selected institutes to its credit. The earliest schools of architecture, to name a few, were Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai; Centre of Environmental Planning and Technology, (CEPT), Ahmedabad; and the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi. These still exist as India's premier and prestigious architecture institutes. Architecture has undergone a revolution with advancements in science and technology. But colleges have not seen a major change in their curriculum. This may be due to the fact that architecture is mainly self- taught. Designing skills are more of instinct rather than of theoretical learning. But then, designing is not the only subject being taught in architecture schools. Before venturing into the vast curriculum in architecture colleges, one must know the basic educational qualifications required to write the entrance examination. You have to pass Class XII in the science stream, but private colleges have a minimum cut-off percentage ranging from 50%-60%. Almost all colleges have an entrance exam followed by an interview, and collective marking of the same along with the Class XII results can qualify one to a seat in architecture.
