Discipline Based Art Education Discipline Based Art Education (commonly called DBAE) is an art education method that goes beyond painting a pretty picture. DBAE promotes higher level thinking skills, original problem solving skills, cultural and global awareness, verbal and non-verbal communication, and other skills that will help students throughout their lives. These goals are accomplished by teaching art history, criticism and aesthetics as well as production. For an example we will use a lesson on making clay pots using the coil method. That lesson provides the teacher with the opportunity to help the students learn about proportion, technique, and how the shape of the pot causes different feelings in viewers (pots can be graceful, strong, awkward, etc.) While the students make the pots, they solve problems like, "Do I want my coils to make designs on the pot? Why or why not?", and, "How do I make my pot look delicate?" The students' pots can be can be related to pots made in other cultures, like the Greeks, the Aztecs, the Japanese, or others.

Extractions: This year we will be studying American art. All of the art we will study will have been made by American artists here in America. We will begin next time with the earliest American artists the Native Americans or American Indians. We will also look at Colonial American art, art of the early settlers, all the way to Modern American art by the end of the school year. Today we are going to look at many examples of American art, and you will choose one to create a design for a fan. First, I will show you how to make your fan, then well decorate them with American art. ACTIVITY: Choose artwork from the tray. Draw your own version of the artists work. Remember you can change the art, add things, take way things, make it larger or smaller, draw only a part, change the color, but you must look at an artists work. Be sure to make your picture large enough to fill the space on your fan. You can add a background and/or border to complete your work or fill up the space. Draw with marker (or pen) and color with crayon.
