The Dutchman was the youngest son of George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher. Although as a young man he had an interest in art and making prints, ill health made it hard for him to ever graduate successfully at school for his talents. After leaving school he attempted to pursue a career in architecture. In Haarlem he studied at the school for Architecture and Decorative Arts where he got encouragement from the school's director. He studied full time in graphic and decorative arts. Finishing school he traveled to Italy and Spain along with two friends where he found much inspiration for his artwork. It was in Italy that he met his Swiss wife Jetta Umiker whom he married in June 1924. Around this time he held his one man exhibit in his Native Holland. By 1929, his popularity had grown and he had settled in Rome with his wife and family but his work made it impossible to stay at one place for a long time. He continued to travel extensively throughout Europe where he would draw and sketch for prints. In 1940 at the outbreak of the war when the Nazi's invaded Holland and Belgium, Escher returned to Holland after his mothers death to help settle her affairs. He and his wife Jetta settled in Baarn. When the war ended he took part in a exhibition show of works of artist who did not collabrate with the Nazi regime.

Extractions: Maurits Escher was always referred to by his parents as Mauk. He was brought up by his father, George Escher, who was a civil engineer, and his second wife Sarah who was the daughter of a government minister. He lived with his four older brothers, Arnold, Johan, Berend, and Edmond. Maurits attended both elementary and secondary school in Arnhem between 1912 and 1918, where he failed to shine in many of his subjects, but exhibited an early interest in both music and carpentry. People expressed the opinion that he possessed a mathematical brain but he never excelled in the subject at any stage during his schooling and treated the subject with some considerable unease. He wrote [7]:- At high school in Arnhem, I was extremely poor at arithmetic and algebra because I had, and still have, great difficulty with the abstractions of numbers and letters. When, later, in stereometry solid geometry , an appeal was made to my imagination, it went a bit better, but in school I never excelled in that subject. But our path through life can take strange turns.
