Extractions: Nottingham Astronomy Research In the School of Physics and Astronomy, our astronomical research spans the range of extragalactic astrophysics from detailed analyses of individual galaxies to the overall structure of the Universe. This work combines observational studies of astronomical objects with detailed theoretical modelling. Observations are regularly made using the major telescope facilities in Australia, the Canary Islands and Hawaii, as well as satellites such as the Hubble Space Telescope, while our theoretical work draws on numerical simulations obtained from state-of-the-art supercomputers. Extractions: Canadian Astronomy Data Centre Going from medicine to astronomy is in a sense going from body to soul because, in fact, the study of the universe is something that's deep in our soul. We really need to understand how the universe we observe came to be in the first placehow it came to evolve from its early state to the state that we see it in today. I'm with the National Research Council of Canada, which is part of the federal government, and I work with Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC), which is part of the Hertzburg Institute of Astrophysics. The mandate the federal government gave to the CADC is to provide services to the research community that help them to do better research and to develop facilities that they don't have the capabilities to develop themselves. So we try and develop what are nowadays mostly web-based tools that are then distributed to university researchers. The Canadian Astronomy Data Centre is a very small group. There are really only about four or five of us, depending on if you count temporary and contract workers. It was founded in 1986, and it has grown from three to about four or five in that decade and really made great advances in the field of what we call data archiving. We think of data archiving in very broad terms; it involves data processing, data cataloging, data distribution, and a lot of other things.

Extractions: FYI Number 55: April 23, 2001 Blue Ribbon Committee Formed on Management of Astronomy Research Based on a recommendation by the Bush Administration, the National Research Council has formed a new committee to look into the possibility of transferring to NASA the astronomy responsibilities currently managed by NSF. The Committee on Organization and Management of Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics (COMRAA) will consider this and other options, and is expected to release its report by September 1, 2001. As described in FYI , the President's March 1 budget blueprint suggested that "now is the time to assess the Federal Government's management and organization of astronomical research." The document called for NSF and NASA to establish "a Blue Ribbon Panel to assess the organizational effectiveness of Federal support of astronomical sciences and, specifically, the pros and cons of transferring NSF's astronomy responsibilities to NASA. The panel may also develop alternative options." The committee's web site identifies two recent NRC documents addressing the status of U.S. astronomy: Federal Funding for Research in Astronomy (the FFAR report), and Astronomy and Astrophysics in the New Millennium (the AASC report). According to the web site, "the FFAR report found that over the last decade, the balance of support has shifted toward NASA. NSF's share of support for grants has fallen from 60 percent at the beginning of the 1980s to 30 percent at the end of the 1990s." Both reports raised concerns that a large portion of total astronomy funding supports a small number of NASA space missions, and that NSF has a tendency to underinvest in research and analysis that would capitalize on the capabilities of new facilities.

The goal then is to create a new strategy." - NRC Committee on the Physics of the Universe As reported in FYI #67 , a new report by the NRC's Committee on the Physics of the Universe addresses interdisciplinary research that could lead to breakthroughs in both physics and astronomy. FYI #67 listed eleven questions the Committee identified as the key research opportunities at the intersection of these two fields. This FYI presents the Committee's strategy for the research and interagency coordination necessary to investigate the eleven questions. The Committee recognizes that addressing such interdisciplinary challenges in a comprehensive way will require new approaches and greater cooperation: "The obstacles are sometimes disciplinary and sometimes institutional because the science lies at the interface of two mature disciplines and crosses the boundaries of three U.S. funding agencies." The report later adds, "No one agency currently has unique ownership of the science at the intersection of astronomy and physics; nor can one agency working alone mount the effort needed to realize the great opportunities. DOE, NASA and NSF are all deeply interested in the science at the intersection of physics and astronomy and each brings unique expertise to the enterprise. Only by working together can they take full advantage of the opportunities at this special time."

The telescope offers students a unique opportunity for hands-on experience with a research-grade telescope. Research areas of the Astronomy Department at Minnesota include comets, star formation and stellar evolution, novae, supernova remnants, the interstellar medium and galactic structure, structure and evolution of galaxies, gravitational lensing and cosmology. Instrumentation development in spectroscopy, photometry and polarimetry is concentrated in the infrared. Theoretical and computational astrophysics deal with gas dynamics as well as visualization of 3-D astrophysical simulations. In addition to departmental telescopes at O'Brien and Mt. Lemmon, researchers use the national optical and infrared facilities at Kitt Peak, Cerro Tololo, Mauna Kea, the Hubble Space Telescope and the radio telescopes at Greenbank, Arecibo and the Very Large Array. The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) has significant departmental involvement. The department is also expecting to join the Large Binocular Telescope project in Arizona and thereby obtain guaranteed access to an entire suite of optical telescopes from 0.9 to 8.4 meters in aperture as well as a 10 meter submillimeter radio telescope.
