Extractions: Way-New Productivity Profits are down and growth has been slow, but look on the bright side: After falling precipitously at the start of 2002, the overall productivity of the U.S. economy began to improve in the third quarter. Why? The Bureau of Labor Statistics credits the proliferation of pink slips. Companies have historically retained workers well into a downturn. Today they move much more quickly to cut costs (read: employees ). Technology helps too, by creating big efficiencies in sectors such as banking , wholesale, and retail sales. Add it all up, and it now takes fewer hours for American workers to achieve greater economic output.

Forecasts had centred on an unchanged 6.2 percent rate. Treasurer Peter Costello said despite January's statistical "blip", unemployment could improve further over the year. Economists had expected some winding back of the strong 112,600 jobs gain of the previous two months with a modest 10,000 fall in January. Instead the seasonally adjusted 111,000 rise was the largest increase since 1991. "I find (the employment rise) very hard to believe given that it's so out of whack with every other indicator for the jobs market that we've got in Australia at the moment," said Tony Meer, senior economist at Deutsche Bank.
