Extractions: Vietnam's agricultural industries have become the latest victims of the global economic slowdown and the uncertainty following the September 11 attacks in the US. Late last month, the Vietnamese Government was forced to drastically scale back its agricultural export targets, cutting the projected figure for 2001 from $US3.2 billion ($6.4 billion) to $US2.5 billion. Next year's farm export earnings are now tipped to be $US3 billion - still less than the original forecast for this year. This announcement is a major blow to the Vietnamese economy, which still relies heavily on the farming sector to earn foreign currency to sustain its 78 million people, 80 per cent of whom live in rural areas. The Vietnam Labour Confederation recently reported that a quarter of state-run farms were battling heavy losses, and in some cases were unable even to pay their workers.

Extractions: Consumers in the 14 Asia-Pacific countries covered by Screen Digest's forthcoming report* spent a total of $7.7bn on buying and renting legally produced videos in 2000b - an increase of almost 14% on total consumer spending in 1999. This represents spending across all three of the video formats that are common in the region - VHS cassettes, Video CDs (VCDs) and DVDs. Historically, the Asia-Pacific region has some of the fastest-growing economies in the world, making the region a competitive force that offers sizeable rewards for domestic and foreign distributors. Japan is the world's second largest single-territory video market, Australia has one of the most mature video rental businesses in the world, whilst China and India boast two of the largest potential consumer markets worldwide. The region suffered severely after the economic crisis of 1997. In the two years to the end of 1998 consumer spending on video across the whole region fell by 13% - spending in the emerging markets (ie, excluding Australia, New Zealand and Japan) falling by 30%. However, according to Screen Digest's latest research, during 2000 total consumer spending on video returned to and even exceeded the levels experienced in the peak year of 1996.
