Extractions: Art is a central part of the life of Australian aborigines and takes many forms. Traditionally it was made for purely cultural reasons and was only able to be created or viewed by people initiated to the proper level of knowledge. More recently, artwork has been made specifically for public viewing. Regardless of whether the art is for private or public purposes, for many artists their work remains inspired by the traditional marks and symbols from the Dreaming and the artist's country. Uluru is a landscape of profound spiritual significance for Anangu Aborigines. The Dreaming is a term used by Aboriginal people to describe relations between the spiritual, natural and moral elements of the world. It relates to a period before living memory or experience - a time of creator ancestors and supernatural beings. This period is called the Dreamtime . Many art works are visual representations of the symbols associated with the artist's Dreaming. Conventional designs and symbols are an essential part of the long traditions in Aboriginal art. When applied to the body of a person taking part in a ceremony or the surface of an object, these have the power to transform the object to one with religious significance. Dots are one of the conventional symbols widely used and for many non-Aboriginal people these are what give Central and Western Desert art its distinctive character.

Under the Governments financial sector reforms following the Wallis Inquiry, safety and soundness requirements for general insurers - codified in the Insurance Act 1973 - are the responsibility of APRA. By the time of APRAs inception in July 1998, the old Insurance Act had long been overtaken by market and regulatory developments, and was badly in need of significant reform. The emergence of some substantial losses in the industry during this period served to reinforce the case for reform, in order to increase public confidence. After several years of policy development and industry consultation, APRAs reform proposals were approved by the Government in November 2000, and legislated by the Parliament in August 2001. The final standards were tabled in Parliament in February 2002, and took effect on 1 July 2002.

The Aboriginal peoples developed their accommodation with the environment over a period of at least 40,000 years, during much of which contacts with the outside world, often hinging on changing sea levels, appear to have been fleeting. The British, on the other hand, when they settled New South Wales as a penal colony in 1788, did so partly because of its remoteness. The convict heritage ensured that European perceptions of the environment were often influenced by the sense of exile and alienation. Yet often the distance from Britain, and the isolation it imposed, served to strengthen rather than weaken ties with the cultural metropolis. The ambivalence of the continuing colonial relationship, which has only been dismantled in the second half of the 20th century, has been a central cultural preoccupation in Australia. Australia substantially reflected the heritage of the British settlers. Customs were modified as the settlers adapted to the new country and its exceptionally fine climate. A culture evolved that, although based on the British tradition, is unique to Australia. The increasing sophistication of Australian culture has been promoted by government subsidies for the arts and the provision of improved facilities. Many cities and towns have built or expanded art galleries and performing art centers. The architecturally stunning Sydney Opera House is the best known of the modern venues. Even in the married lives they treated their choice as a most serious one indeed by observing certain taboos and social customs such as the marriage between people from within the same localised group was taboo. Corroborees The Aboriginal culture and way of life is very closely tied to their observance of and being part of the land which they are protectors of to a point where part of their culture involves the sacred meetings known as Corroborees. At these Corroborees stories that have been handed down over the ages are told by way of music, dance and singing. The stories themselves may have been the simple act of hunting a particular animal that these people have a lot of respect for or in fact the meeting of family members whom have not been together for many years, in fact all facets of life is enacted in these Corroborees.
