INTRODUCTION From the beginning of time humankind has held ceremonies for the central events of life. Long before the recognised religions were established people were performing rituals and holding ceremonies. In Australia ceremonies were carried out by Aborigines for 40-50 thousandyears before the Europeans arrived. Then in January 1788 the first thing Governor Phillip did when his boat landed on the beach was hold a ceremony on the shores of Port Jackson to raise the British flag. For the next 200 years ceremonies held by Europeans in Australia were mostly ceremonies of the Church or the Crown. Eventually other rituals and ceremonies grew up. There was the ritual of the Anzac Day march and a Ceremony of Remembrance. There were ceremonies for the kick-off at football Grand Finals and a ceremony for presenting the Melbourne Cup to the owner of the winning horse. The Olympic Games in Melbourne was opened by a grand ceremony in the fifties. There were also ceremonies for people to become Australian citizens. But mostly the ceremonies for family life were the ceremonies of the churches. Only in the last 25 years has there been family ceremonies conducted by Civil Celebrants. In that time, with the encouragement of Civil Celebrants people have begun designing distinctly Australian ceremonies.
