The ABCs of TCP/IP examines: the manner by which various protocols and applications operate, addressing issues, security methods, routing, network design constraints, testing methods, troubleshooting, management issues, and emerging applications. It also includes separate chapters focusing on security threats and methods useful for overcoming these threats.About the Author:Gilbert Held is an award-winning author and lecturer. Download Description
Create XML documents the easy way, with this ABC of XML tags. Learn how to build every XML tag step by step. The big IDEA is that you get all the tools you need to learn how--Instructions, Diagrams, Examples, and Answers.

1. Instructions: Instead of giving you raw syntax as in a conventional reference volume, I walk you through building the tags, step by step.

2. Diagrams: Because the actual work involves tiny bits of punctuation, I give you large diagrams, showing each piece of the structure, up front. You can see the structure you are building, right in front of you.

3. Examples: Many folks say that the examples really help them understand the guidelines. Each step has at least one example, so you can follow those, as you construct the tag.

4. Answers: I have responded to some of the most common questions that come up when I teach this material to professional writers, managers, and other non-programmers in a classroom.Answers to challenges appear in the back of the book.

Aimed at non-programmers,this tutorial takes you by the hand, and walks you through the process of constructing each type of tag. The book is based on the popular course at the University of California, Santa Cruz, XML for the Rest of Us.You can complete the tutorial in 5 hours. Outcome: You can read and write XML.

You can take an XML document, understand it, and modify it without damaging the tags.

You can write your own original XML document accurately and correctly.

And this tutorial offers lots of supporting material at the back.

1. Considering Tools: Applications in which you use XML to create or manage content.

2. Sites.

4. Answers to all the challenges.

5. A to Z of XML Markup: A quick reference.

6. Index.

1-0 out of 5 stars George Omura has no business writing technical books.
I earlier wrote that this book blows chunks.I have ordered another book about AutoLisp, and while waiting for it I have continued to explore Omura's book. After reading further I take back what I said about it blowing chunks. What I should have said is that George Omura is a functional retard who deserves to be tarred, feathered, and run out on the rails of the programming community. This book is bad on every level.Poorly organized, poorly written, not proofread and almost every example has errors in it.For example, he writes
(set quote golden (+ golden 1))
leaving out a required set of parentheses. But hey, what's a couple of parentheses to someone who probably needs help figuring out which way to turn the power switch on his computer.Hope you can guess where the second one goes.

Or consider the section called "How to Convert Numbers to String [sic] and Back."Instead of just explaining how to do it, he makes us go through an example that requires quitting AutoCad, loading one of his example files, making a change to it, starting AutoCad again, and running the function that requires picking points on the screen.Four pages later we get to what we want: a list of the functions that convert numbers to strings...or so it seems.Too bad he decided to leave out atof (assuming he knows about it).Hope you didn't want to convert a string to a real number.

Even when he does explain things he gets it wrong.Describing the function substr, for example, Omura writes, "The third argument is the ending location of the substring. This value is an integer greater than or equal to the value for the beginning of the substring and it determines the ending location of the substring (see figure 7.3)."Omura should have taken his own advice and looked at figure 7.3 himself. He may have noticed that the third argument is the LENGTH of the substring, NOT the ending location of it.Or maybe he wouldn't have noticed it.All bets on the intelligence of this author are off.Even the most glaring errors made it into this publication.Consider the description of how to convert degrees to radians.Omura writes, "A simple formula to convert degrees to radians is:" and gives a formula. Then on the immediately next line he writes, "To convert degrees to radians the formula is:" and gives the inverse.Well, one of the two is correct.

The entire book is written in this manner. With all the out-of-work techies there are you'd think this publisher would have been able to find someone with the inclination to read what he had written before submitting it for publication. This book isn't worth the time it's taken you to read this review.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book blows chunks
I feel personally abused after trying to use this book to program in autocad.I have learned many programming languages and this book is the worst one I have ever encountered. It does not--I reapeat does not--start with the standard explanation of how to print "hello world" and move on from there as all programming books should do.Just trying to figure out how to display the value of my variables as a simple program is running had me pulling out my hair.I could go on but I won't.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for basic conceptual programming skills in Autolisp.
Personally this book is still a part of my library at work. I use it for reference often. You need a good basic knowledge of autocad to follow it well. If not, you have no business programming Autocad. Otherwise an excellent first book for anyone wanting to learn how to manipulate Autocad.I only gave it four stars because I expected additional ABC's with theprogression of Autocad but Mr. Omura fell out of site since Ver. 10. Veryunfortunate, I would have been a loyal reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner
Great book. Far better than many overrated O'rielly books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of errors poorly organized
Found that a good number of the examples contain errors. Might be good for a beginner who wants to know what javascript is and what it can do.But this book should not be purchased as a reference book. Little if no discussion on browser differences or browser detection which I think every javascript book should cover.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is great aboutconfusing beginners.
This book is great about confusing beginners. I haven't read the whole book yet ,but so far it's been pretty confusing to understand the examples that they show because they don't explain the code clearly. If this book ispretty confusing to me even that i have basic programming knowledge, Ican't imagine a total non-programmer learning javaScript from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does a good job for OO programmers..
I am 5+ years of c++ Exp. And i have'nt tried out their example scripts. So the star rating is based on that assumption. I think it would not be a good book for programmers without OO background. For those who have OObackground, i find this is a quite nice book for step-by-step learning. Notall example scripts are included on disk. Overall this book is wellorganised and good start for C++ programmers, which many book fail toachieve.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is useless
Useless content and chock full of errors. The only thing that made this book a useful learning tool was tracking down all of the errors and typos. The book is poorly planned and doesn't really teach you anything. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Glaring errors abound, both technical and grammatical
I went through this text chapter by chapter. I worked it fully as part of an A+ curriculum at a Career Technical School, including accompanying workbooks, labs and online testing through Cisco's Net Academy. Therefore, I believe I'm very qualified to give it a worthy review. So here goes...

I'll start off with the good stuff. The book did prepare me for the A+ certification tests; though I'm glad my school program didn't expect it to carry the educational burden all on its own. The Cisco text was all that was offered for the hardware portion (it's a balance of hardware and software information). In addition, our class worked a two book set from ElementK, which was excellent.

Now back on track: I feel that the Cisco program is headed for providing a fine tutorial for computer geeks to be. In my opinion it presented important knowledge in good order, understandable language and context. It's got potential.

The problem is that it appears to be a *very* rough draft that was rushed out to market and never edited again. It is stacked to the brim with miscaptioned images, confusing sentences, tested or reviewed information that's never covered in the chapter being quizzed. There are plain technical screw-ups where incorrect and sometimes dangerous information is given. In short, I'm very glad I came into it having a comfortable relationship with PCs, because, otherwise, I might have damaged something along the way, or burned the book as a sacrifice to the gods of better editing.

Don't give Cisco your money. They're trying to pawn an alpha test off on you as a functional product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cisco lends a helping hand to the new folks of the IT world.
At first glance, I was a little shocked to see Cisco Press publish a book titled,
I.T. Essentials 1: PC Hardware and Software Companion Guide. After all, this is a company in which its name is synonymous with routers and switches. However, this book is intended for those folks who are just starting out in the I.T. world and those of who are attending an Authorized Cisco Network Academy. That does not mean that you have to be a student of an Academy to grasp the practices and concepts packed in this guide.

This book was designed for individuals who want to understand the workings of a computer, both hardware and software. I.T. Essentials 1 does a great job in covering the basics of computers while teaching you how to prevent, maintain, and troubleshoot both hardware and software issues. The companion guide is laid out in the normal Cisco Press fashion we have grown accustom to - starting out with the chapter objectives and ending with a chapter summary and "Check Your Understanding" review questions.

As expected, I.T. Essentials 1 is packed with screenshots, figures, and diagrams to help illustrate the information clearly. For those of you who wish to pursue their A+ certification, this book will not disappoint you. All thirteen chapters are dedicated to help you achieve your CompTIA A+ certification.

The accompanied CD-ROM contains three test engines as well as interactive labs, videos, and PhotoZooms. For individuals studying for the CompTIA A+ exam, supplemental material includes a certification map that correspond the books chapters to the A+ exam objectives.

One thing I did find disappointing with the book was the organization, you're the lack there of. The chapters appear to be in no particular order. I found myself jumping around from one topic to the next and then back again. However, this would hardly be a reason not to purchase this book.

In the end, I felt Cisco Press; et al did a great job in relaying the information clearly. Weather you are a student at an Authorized Cisco Network Academy, an individual just starting out in the I.T. world, or someone who is studying for their CompTIA A+ certification I.T. Essentials 1: PC Hardware and Software Companion Guide will not disappoint you. ... Read more
