Product Description

Installations today process different types of work with different response times. Every installation wants to make the best use of its resources, maintain the highest possible throughput, and achieve the best possible system responsiveness. You can realize such results by using workload management. This IBM® Redbooks® publication introduces you to the concepts of workload management utilizing Workload Manager (WLM). Workload Manager allows you to define performance goals and assign a business importance to each goal. You define the goals for work in business terms, and the system decides how much resource, such as CPU and storage, should be given to the work. The system matches resources to the work to meet those goals, and constantly monitors and adapts processing to meet the goals. This reporting reflects how well the system is doing compared to its goals, because installations need to know whether performance goals are being achieved as well as what they are accomplishing in the form of performance goals.
The ABCs of z/OS® System Programming is a thirteen-volume collection that provides an introduction to the z/OS operating system and the hardware architecture. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced system programmer, the ABCs collection provides the information that you need to start your research into z/OS and related subjects. If you would like to become more familiar with z/OS in your current environment, or if you are evaluating platforms to consolidate your e-business applications, the ABCs collection will serve as a powerful technical tool.

2-0 out of 5 stars Glaring errors abound, both technical and grammatical
I went through this text chapter by chapter. I worked it fully as part of an A+ curriculum at a Career Technical School, including accompanying workbooks, labs and online testing through Cisco's Net Academy. Therefore, I believe I'm very qualified to give it a worthy review. So here goes...

I'll start off with the good stuff. The book did prepare me for the A+ certification tests; though I'm glad my school program didn't expect it to carry the educational burden all on its own. The Cisco text was all that was offered for the hardware portion (it's a balance of hardware and software information). In addition, our class worked a two book set from ElementK, which was excellent.

Now back on track: I feel that the Cisco program is headed for providing a fine tutorial for computer geeks to be. In my opinion it presented important knowledge in good order, understandable language and context. It's got potential.

The problem is that it appears to be a *very* rough draft that was rushed out to market and never edited again. It is stacked to the brim with miscaptioned images, confusing sentences, tested or reviewed information that's never covered in the chapter being quizzed. There are plain technical screw-ups where incorrect and sometimes dangerous information is given. In short, I'm very glad I came into it having a comfortable relationship with PCs, because, otherwise, I might have damaged something along the way, or burned the book as a sacrifice to the gods of better editing.

Don't give Cisco your money. They're trying to pawn an alpha test off on you as a functional product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cisco lends a helping hand to the new folks of the IT world.
At first glance, I was a little shocked to see Cisco Press publish a book titled,
I.T. Essentials 1: PC Hardware and Software Companion Guide. After all, this is a company in which its name is synonymous with routers and switches. However, this book is intended for those folks who are just starting out in the I.T. world and those of who are attending an Authorized Cisco Network Academy. That does not mean that you have to be a student of an Academy to grasp the practices and concepts packed in this guide.

This book was designed for individuals who want to understand the workings of a computer, both hardware and software. I.T. Essentials 1 does a great job in covering the basics of computers while teaching you how to prevent, maintain, and troubleshoot both hardware and software issues. The companion guide is laid out in the normal Cisco Press fashion we have grown accustom to - starting out with the chapter objectives and ending with a chapter summary and "Check Your Understanding" review questions.

As expected, I.T. Essentials 1 is packed with screenshots, figures, and diagrams to help illustrate the information clearly. For those of you who wish to pursue their A+ certification, this book will not disappoint you. All thirteen chapters are dedicated to help you achieve your CompTIA A+ certification.

The accompanied CD-ROM contains three test engines as well as interactive labs, videos, and PhotoZooms. For individuals studying for the CompTIA A+ exam, supplemental material includes a certification map that correspond the books chapters to the A+ exam objectives.

One thing I did find disappointing with the book was the organization, you're the lack there of. The chapters appear to be in no particular order. I found myself jumping around from one topic to the next and then back again. However, this would hardly be a reason not to purchase this book.

In the end, I felt Cisco Press; et al did a great job in relaying the information clearly. Weather you are a student at an Authorized Cisco Network Academy, an individual just starting out in the I.T. world, or someone who is studying for their CompTIA A+ certification I.T. Essentials 1: PC Hardware and Software Companion Guide will not disappoint you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner
Great book. Far better than many overrated O'rielly books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of errors poorly organized
Found that a good number of the examples contain errors. Might be good for a beginner who wants to know what javascript is and what it can do.But this book should not be purchased as a reference book. Little if no discussion on browser differences or browser detection which I think every javascript book should cover.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is great aboutconfusing beginners.
This book is great about confusing beginners. I haven't read the whole book yet ,but so far it's been pretty confusing to understand the examples that they show because they don't explain the code clearly. If this book ispretty confusing to me even that i have basic programming knowledge, Ican't imagine a total non-programmer learning javaScript from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does a good job for OO programmers..
I am 5+ years of c++ Exp. And i have'nt tried out their example scripts. So the star rating is based on that assumption. I think it would not be a good book for programmers without OO background. For those who have OObackground, i find this is a quite nice book for step-by-step learning. Notall example scripts are included on disk. Overall this book is wellorganised and good start for C++ programmers, which many book fail toachieve.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is useless
Useless content and chock full of errors. The only thing that made this book a useful learning tool was tracking down all of the errors and typos. The book is poorly planned and doesn't really teach you anything. ... Read more

Product Description
Until now, it has been difficult to find the right source of information on LDAP and directory server implementations: books on the subject are overly product-specific, and a search on the Web results in information overload. The ABCs of LDAP: How to Install, Run, and Administer LDAP Services strikes the right balance, providing a synopsis of LDAP fundamentals without getting wrapped up in one particular implementation. This book is for network and systems administrators who want to begin using LDAP more extensively. It delivers the theoretical background needed to understand how these servers work, resulting in clear, concise examples of implementations in both commercial and OpenLDAP environments. The text is structured so that each chapter can stand on its own, with brief descriptions of terms supplemented by references to more detailed explanations in other chapters. You also benefit from a concise overview of how to design a directory, preparing you to execute directory deployments for email, PKI, DNS, NIS servers, and many other productivity-enhancing applications.Topics include major LDAP APIs, such as PHP, Perl, and Java, as well as distributed command line tools. The book covers ways to integrate LDAP into existing systems, and provides hands-on examples within working implementations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginners Guide to LDAP
This book seems to me a good introduction to a complex subject. It is very useful for the beginner, since it explains the important things to know when you will start with LDAP. 5-0 out of 5 stars The ABC's of GW-BASIC
This book was a sensation back in the 1990's and still it retains a good deal of its original pizzaz in spite of lots of water under the bridge of the river Thames.I must implore you not to purchase this particular book if you are an advanced programmer as it will not thrill you to the root of your cerebral cortex in the manner a more advanced tome would. As a simple reference to the Basic programming language though, it has some unsung merit buried deep within its meager pages.Although it failed as a prime educational document it did succeed at arriving at my residence in excellent condition and I would consider making future purchases from this seller. ... Product Description
Our world is rapidly becoming an Internet-based world, with tens of millions of homes, millions of businesses, and within a short period of time, possibly hundreds of millions of mobile professionals accessing the literal mother of all networks. One of the key problems affecting many Internet users, ranging from individual professionals to networking managers and administrators, is a lack of knowledge concerning Internet Protocol (IP) addressing.A detailed reference guide, The ABCs of IP Addressing provides you with the detailed information about the key challenges of IP addressing and designing networks that work efficiently. It takes you from the basics of the binary numbering system to advanced topics in subnetting, network address translation, and configuring workstations, servers and routers. The book contains network tools that prepare you for testing and troubleshooting and highlights the need for techniques that conserve the use of IP addressing as well as the creation of a next generation IP addressing structure. While structured on a chapter by chapter basis, wherever possible each chapter was written to be independent, making the book convenient and easy to use in a hectic work environment. While you may find it possible to design a network or configure a workstation to operate without a detailed knowledge of IP addressing, the end results are not very efficient. And in the quickly changing global business environment, inefficiency wastes your time and money, both valuable resources for gaining and maintaining the competitive edge. With The ABCs of IP Addressing you get the comprehensive coverage of applications and protocols that help you do your job faster and more effectively. ... Read more
