Book Description

A comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research, development, and commercialization potential of technology in acid rain control.

These papers by noted researchers, consultants, and program directors in the acid rain and energy field were delivered at a conference sponsored by the Illinois General Assembly and the Coal Extraction and Utilization Research Center at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

The book begins with a good technological overview of the problem and possible solutions. Major points of interest are the roles of advanced coal cleaning technologies, flue-gas desulfurization (FGD), limestone injection multiphase burners (LIMB), fluidized-bed combustors (FBC), integrated combined-cycle systems, coal gasification, coal switching or compliance coal, and the use of nuclear energy in the control of acid deposition.

Diane Suitt Gilleland and James H. Swisher also edited the previous conference proceedings, Acid Rain Control: The Costs of Compliance (Southern Illinois University Press).

Editorial Review

Book Description
Acid Rain Science and Politics in Japan is a pioneering work in environmental and Asian history as well as an in-depth analysis of the influence of science on domestic and international environmental politics. Kenneth Wilkening's study also illuminates the global struggle to create sustainable societies.

The Meiji Restoration of 1868 ended Japan's era of isolation- created self-sufficiency and sustainability. The opening of the country to Western ideas and technology not only brought pollution problems associated with industrialization (including acid rain) but also scientific techniques for understanding and combating them. Wilkening identifies three pollution-related "sustainability crises" in modern Japanese history: copper mining in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which spurred Japan's first acid rain research and policy initiatives; horrendous post-World War II domestic industrial pollution, which resulted in a "hidden" acid rain problem; and the present-day global problem of transboundary pollution, in which Japan is a victim of imported acid rain. He traces the country's scientific and policy responses to these crises through six distinct periods related to acid rain problems and argues that Japan's leadership role in East Asian acid rain science and policy today can be explained in large part by the "historical scientific momentum" generated by efforts to confront the issue since 1868, reinforced by Japan's cultural affinity with rain (its "culture of rain"). Wilkening provides an overview of nature, culture, and the acid rain problem in Japan to complement the general set of concepts he develops to analyze the interface of science and politics in environmental policymaking. He concludes with a discussion of lessons from Japan's experience that can be applied to the creation of sustainable societies worldwide. ... Read more

Book Description
Markets for Clean Air provides a comprehensive, in-depth description and evaluation of the first three years' experience with the U.S. Acid Rain Program. This environmental control program is the world's first large-scale use of a tradable emission permit system for achieving environmental goals. The book analyzes the behavior and performance of the market for emissions permits, called allowances in the Acid Rain Program, and quantifies emission reductions, compliance costs, and cost savings associated with the trading program. The book also includes chapters on the historical context in which this pioneering program developed and the political economy of allowance allocations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read For Hip-hop Heads
This is an extraordinary book for the Hip-hop lover. There are poems in this book that range in everything from racial profiling, sex, love, politics and so much more. Shabazz-Perez definetly executed the struggle in the black community and aided in the constant attempts of the African Americans to let their voices be heard through the muck of the streets.

The concept of this book was hot. Mr. Shabazz-Perez understands that poetry(Hip-hop, Spoken Word) is an outlet for our youth and acts as the news paper for those who don't know whats going on in today's world. This book touches on so many live subjects and it puts perspective on hoodlife, streetlife, and just life as a whole.

For those who are looking for a change of pace and loves to read the urban brand books, this is the book for you. Don't pass up an opportunity to read Acid Rains on My City, But I See Rainbows in the Puddles.

Acid Rains on My City, but I See Rainbows in the Puddles
by Shabazz-Perez

This book is wonderful I feel every person should read this book it's just great. My daughter got this book and read it non stop she is in her second year in high school she had her friends calling for her to read pages to them because she would not load her copy out.

There is a young boy in her school that has not picked up and book to read in 6 years once he over heard my daughter reading this book to a class mate he then asked if she know where he could buy a copy for himself. He thanked my daughter for telling him about this book.He said now here is a book he dose not mind picking up to read.

Please pick up this book it a great reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read...
We can walk through the ghetto, hear stories of the ghetto or read about the ghetto, but unless you are a first-hand witness to the ghetto YOU DO NOT KNOW. Brother Shabazz-Perez has compiled some powerful poems from the lives and mouths of babes. His God gifted students from the Chicago public school system share what they have experienced in the ghetto through poetry.

The poems are written in a plethora of topics, but whose focus is our life. On page 66, Remembering Africa, a short poem about pain and emancipation; and below it is a short story of discrimination and the pot calling the kettle black.
I love the play on words with the title "Acid Rain on My City but I See Rainbows in the Puddles." No matter how acidic the ghetto gets God made all of us a promise, and the Rainbow in the puddle is our reminder. ... Read more
