5-0 out of 5 stars Very, very helpful.
As a student of Medical Transcription and Physician's coding I found this book of great help. It is a great "when in doubt" saver. I recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful!
Great book for anyone in the clinical field...to quickly look up indecipherable abbreviations. Covers almost all standard short forms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful handbook.
This handy compendium contains over 1,500 acronyms, e.g., AIDS, SIDS, GOMER "Get Out of My Emergency Room" (not really, just kidding), eponyms such as Lyme disease and Reye syndrome, and multiple meanings for such abbreviations as "MH", which can mean malignant hyperthermia, marital history, medical history, melanophore hormone, menstrual history, mental health, or municipal hospital!
Delong's work will prove useful for medical students, nurses and other healthcare professionals, medical transcribers, fiction writers, and others who want a peek into the arcane world of medical jargon.

When working in the highly technical fields of astronomy and the related space sciences, the practitioner is constantly confronted with a baffling array of different abbreviations, acronyms, contractions and symbols. The identification and differentiation of these terms is a task which, all too often, can prove to be a near impossible one.

With about 200,000 entries, StarBriefs Plus represents the most comprehensive and accurately validated collection of abbreviations, acronyms, contractions and symbols within astronomy, related space sciences and other related fields. As such, this invaluable reference source (and its companion volume, StarGuides Plus) should be on the reference shelf of every library, organization or individual with any interest in these areas.

Besides astronomy and associated space sciences, related fields such as aeronautics, aeronomy, astronautics, atmospheric sciences, chemistry, communications, computer sciences, data processing, education, electronics, engineering, energetics, environment, geodesy, geophysics, information handling, management, mathematics, meteorology, optics, physics, remote sensing, and so on, are also covered when justified. Terms in common use and/or of general interest have also been included where appropriate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Less than what I expected, but still okay.
I was expecting a bigger book, about the size of my Roget's Thesaurus. This dictionary of abbreviations is only 5.75" tall and 4.25" wide, small enough to fit into a front pocket of my jeans. It has 20,000 entries and 294 pages.

Pros: Easily stored, easily portable, eye-pleasing green cover (matches amazon's image), inexpensive, has been somewhat useful
Cons: This is not a definitive dictionary of abbreviations. It has not included a number of abbreviations that I have encountered. On the other hand, it has had some entries that I did not expect it to have.

I thought about buying a dictionary of abbreviations while reading Jeffrey Deaver (the author of Bone Collector, which was made into a Denzel Washingtong movie). For an author of fiction, he uses an unusual number of abbreviations, though I suppose you don't need a dictionary for most of them. Either he explains them, or you get the gist of their meaning from the context. Some of his abbreviations are included in this dictionary, some are not. But some of Deaver's abbreviations are rather private (or maybe the word "esoteric" is appropriate), and I really don't expect any dictionary of abbreviations to include them.

I suspect that no single volume will have all the abbreviations that everyone is looking for, but I think there are bigger dictionaries of abbreviations that have many more entries than this small one has. But then you wouldn't want to try to carry those around in your pocket or your purse.
