Many people approach "style" in theatre as a play where wigs and tights are necessary.Harrop & Epstein do not attempt to disprove this notion, but rather detail the approach to acting in all dramatic genres i.e. greek, comedy, farce, tragedy, Shakespeare, etc.They also identify the necessity to understand the "style" of the piece being produced from an all areas and suggest exercises to unlock the meaning of the piece.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is afraid of a stylized play and is a necessary read for both actors and directors (especially those directors who have had little or no performance training). ... After a 40 year business career, I have fortunately been able to return to my roots as a teacher of theatre.Forget the title, Deer and Del Vera have written a comprehensive and understandable guide for acting, period.Most guides to acting in "straight" drama should have such clarity and context.It is a gem for those of us who have discovered it.

If you are a musical theatre teacher, student, pianist, director, musical director or choreographer, you will find this book to be really informative and useful. Joe Deer and Rocco Dal Vera have broken down the process of approaching musical theatre in an intelligent, clear and creative way without being dry or overly technical. This book is brilliant!It is the best acting lesson on interpreting the Bard you could ever receive.And one of the best cases yet for a bucket of cold water in the faces of Oxfordians everywhere.Tucker's approach proves that only an actor could have written these works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong handbook on how Shakespeare was and aught to be done.
The most significant aspect of this book is Tucker's imperative respect for the First Folios. These earliest of Shakespearean texts, which feature spelling errors and a messier type set, offer and the book tries and proves over and over, the best acting/performance texts.

The distinction between acting/performance texts and scholastic/reading ones is essential, as Tucker again and again subverts the modern editions of Shakespeare, and the editors, who continually add and make scholastic/academic assumption as to the intent of the texts. These editors reduce the active nature of the texts and "regularize" over and over what the original actors had to work with.

Through the Original Shakespeare Company, which he co-founded, Tucker and his actors approach the texts as the actors who originated them did. This was by using no rehearsal time, and giving each actor only the texts they speak and the appropriate cue lines, allowing for a spontaneous and urgent playmaking which heightens the already heightened Shakespeare.

Through this approach, which originally was one of practicality, the actors tasks are enhanced. Listening becomes that much more important, as do the choices each actor must make based soley on the texts which are devoid of modern directions and edits; such as to who to speak to, whether or not a speech is an aside, particular capitalization and punctuation and stage business.

For anyone who performs Shakespeare this is a terrific book. As well for directors this may even be better. Tucker breaks down the "original approach" in the early part of the book. Then spends the largest chunk detailing the experiments he and his company made with this approach, beginning with scenes through full text performances. There is then a terrific section devoted to particular ways of finding the secrets in the text, and the associated choices one can make on stage.

While the section about the details of the company's performances is too long and sometimes repetative, the book is a revelation. Anyone willing to try this style would surely feel the difference, as an audience would too.By scrapping the modern trappings of what theatre is, to reduce it to it's leanest and most energetic, magnetic form in the use of the phenomenal texts of Shakespeare can realize the power of theatre and clarify it's immortal importance and necessity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes reading Shakespeare like a John Grisham Novel
This book explains how to "read" Shakespeare easily. (Actually, it's about how to act his plays, but the ideas can equally well be used to simply read the plays with greater appreciation.) The method presented is quite easy and it makes the plays come to life. I wish I had this book 25 years ago when I studied Shakespeare in school.

I have just started this book, but already I want to read Shakespeare's plays again to see what I missed - and I missed plenty. You also begin to understand why Shakespeare was a great play-writer, why his works have stood the test of time while the other writers of his age have withered away.

Some of the interesting observerations: Thee vs. You has real significance (the former is intimitate while the latter is formal), why he writes in prose sometimes, the significance of the iambic pentameter (di-dum, etc.).

The author also dispels a myth that English spoken in Shakespeare's time was hard compared to today. Rather Shakespeare's words were always harder than the common speak of the day, yet his plays were able to be well understood because of the "clues" presented in the writing, which made the actors act the part correctly, thus making the language easier to understand. Don't worry if you did not fully this last paragraph. The book will explain all.

And, soon you'll be able to turn the pages of a Shakespeare play faster than that of a John Grisham novel.

I really wish my teachers had this book when I was in school. It would have made Shakespeare so much more fun to study. Going back to Shakespeare after reading Secrets of Acting Shakespeare, you can actualy see the stage directions with every word Shakespeare writes. When you know the stage directions Shakespeare wrote into his texts, Shakespeare's works become so much more fun to read. Patrick takes you through the way Shakespeare's plays were performed when Shakespeare was still alive, and leads you through the discoveries Patrick's actors made when he and his theater company started performing Shakespeare's plays the way Shakespearewanted it done. Needless to say, this book is the best book on Shakespearian Acting I've ever read, and would recommend it to anyone who's even slightly interested in the Bard's works. I would also recommend Patrick Tucker's First Folio Monologue books for men and women. They're a crash course in the work Patrick covered in Secrets of Acting Shakespeare, and a great way to sink your teeth into Patrick's ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare, how it was in the beginning
This is an exciting book about how Shakespeare's plays actually got on to the stage. The actors then were hardworking, often doing a different play each night, and there was no time for rehearsal as we know it today.
The actors learnt their parts from cue scripts, long scrolls showing the last few words of the previous speech and then their own. They had to be extra attentive or they might miss their entry. The Book-holder, or prompt, was the only person to have the entire text (a valuable document you didn't want anybody else to steal, no copyright in those days) was prominently on stage to see that things went right and, if a prompt was needed, it was given openly. The audience accepted this as part of the performance though anybody needing too many prompts would doubtless get some barracking.
The author, who clearly has a science background and knows how to present a logical case, shows that all the information needed is in the First Folio which is an actors' tool, not a dead piece of Eng Lit. 'you', 'thou' and 'thee' are not interchangeable but actually tell the actor where to stand in relation to others on the stage. Modern editions of Shakespeare have tidied the text up to be read by students; the First Folio had lines, half lines, capital letters in odd places, strange commas; but all actually telling the actor what to do.
The author has been working as a director for the last forty years or so and has refined his theories on the job. He has run The Original Shakespeare Company with many successful productions using his methods. He is wildly popular with his actors and the few productions he was allowed to do at The Globe, London, were sold out and enthusiastically received.
The academic world and theatre establishment are not so happy to see their entrenched theories challenged; and it must be extra annoying that he writes so well and is such a pleasure to read. ... Read more

Don Richardson's book brings to fruition the idea that Actors need to learn to trust the text and respond to the text and not graft on personal memories that are irrelevant to the text. Don Richardson's teachings allow for realistic responses that come from the play and the story of the character. A must for any actor! Excellent Book!

I thumbed through this book many years ago and was intrigued but after taking a "Method" acting class just recently--I decided to revisit Richardson's book to the point of actually joining a class directed by one of his disciples, Brad Heller. I believe you cannot learn about acting just from reading a book though the book can serve as a guide, but by application which is why I'm joining this class.The points made in this book are very clear and concise though I do admit Richardson had his bias particularly in regards to other actors such as Brando, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, DeNiro and Pacino.He states that Brando failed miserably as Mark Antony in "Julius Caesar" and yet John Gielgud was so impressed by Marlon's first time out at Shakespeare that he invited him to join the Old Vic.Also Brando won the Best Foreign Actor Award by BAFTA and also Olivier himself praised Brando's performance.It seems that Richardson has a bias against American actors doing classical roles to the point that only stage trained British actors can do successfully.Also he is severely critical of Streep's performances in "Sophie's Choice" and "The French Lieutenant's Woman", calling them school-girlish.Outside of that one complaint, this book is still worthwhile as an antidote to "The Method".

I loved Don Richardson and I love this book.It is a practical, easy to understand alternative to the method.I learned how to quickly make acting choices and put them into my body.I have been using this method for the last 15 years and I have been lucky enough to work alot. My only regret is that this book does not capture his philosophical view of people and his vast archive of knowlege and crazy stories.Don was a well respected director and an amazing teacher.When you nailed a scene, Don would rise from his directors chair and give you "the handshake".There was no greater joy than getting one.Otherwise he would say in "Get your notebooks".Reading Acting Without Agony is like "getting out your notebook".

In this compact, easy to read tome, the late Mr. Richardson (an experienced director besides teacher)attacks, debunks and demystifies the insipid acting cult known as "the method". Breaking down acting into simple (albeit far too simple-hence the 4 star rating)and applicable steps, Richardson approaches acting as a joyful and natural form of human expression.

While the book doesn't really provide as many usefull lessons (a few more would have earned the book a slightly higher rating)as attending a class would, it does communicate a clear philosophy that makes acting accessible to a wider variety of students.

Richardson attacks the psuedo-pyschiatric approaches made popular by too many 20th Century acting teachers and sticks to the very basics. A successful director himself (unlike the most of the pantheon of American Acting teachers- Adler, Meisner, Strassberg- Lewis being the exception)Richardson takes great pains to approach acting from both sides of the camera and stage. His teaching method is to make acting as painless as possible.

Too bad this is relatively hard to get ahold of. A valuable addition to any actor's library.

Ultimately, yes, this is an interesing book.What makes it interesting is that it points out a lot of the flaws and pitfalls in 'Method' acting.That was something that I wrestled with for years.All the agony.I'd lost the joy in the process.That part makes this book interesting.However, these techniques, although they sound promising are a bit shallow and overly simplistic at times.I still think this is a worthwhile book.There are bits of it that are very good.I would just say to watch out for when it gets too gimmicky.Now, this is just my own experience, I want to be fair here, maybe others were able to make this work, but I tried his system for supposedly creating emotions and to me that is just a gimmicky way to work.I can't imagine how that could work for anyone.It sounds interesting but after trying it, the techniques given for emotions just fall flat (for me anyway).
The overall problem with this book is that it tries to create too many little 'tricks' at times.I don't think it quite works that way. My personal feeling is that you need to be thorough in your character choices, knowthe right questions to ask, and eventually trust your talent.BE.Be in the moment, with all the work you've done you then jump in and surrender to your talent.I don't think any little system can do that.I think it's a god given-surrendered kind of thing, not something you try to manipulate.That was at times the problem I had with this book.
Nevertheless, it does have some gems in it.Aside from the system for creating emotions, the rest of the book is very good.It points out the importance of a well chosen objective, he gives you good character questions and explains how to work on different styles.Also, he does find a nice way to simplify things.I did feel I learned some good things from this book. ... FILM AND TELEVISION ACTING belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who aspires to a career in motion pictures or is inquisitive about how the process of motion picture acting takes place. Author Ian Bernard, who has distinguished himself as an actor, writer, musical composer and director, adds to his well deserved laurels with this book that leads the actor through the technical steps and creative nuances of acting for both big screen and small.

Most actors begin their careers in amateur stage theatrics. No matter how competent their stage training may be, the transition to the screen can be disconcerting.Some aspects of screen acting make the transition easier: Voice projection, vital on the stage, doesn't come into play in screen acting. The "three quarters front" body position on stage is replaced by direct alignment, but exact positions become more vital in front of the camera, in order to remain in focus and within the lights. Much is made of "retakes" in film; if you don't get it right in take one there is take two, and twelve, and twenty if need be. But those extra takes are more often given to correct technical errors than to improve performance (especially in television where time restraints make compromise in the realm of performance common place).

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of switching from stage to screen performance is the lack of continuity in shooting a movie. One often performs the love scene before the scene where boy meets girl and since there is no build up of emotion that carries from one scene to another as on stage, the screen actor usually has to stimulate his emotions by his own solitary devices.

Mr. Bernard's book is a blueprint for building a bridge between stage and screen acting by providing theory and technique for making the transition.

Extraordinarily bad. A list of "hey-- wouldn't this be fun?" exercises with little applicable value. I don't need a book to instruct me how to explore the taste of chocolate cake and react accordingly, thanks. My students need innovative, action-packed games.

This collection of 110 acting exercises would be appropriate for beginning actors grades 9-12.Some exercises rely on specific events in order to practice them (going to the dentist, having a broken heart).Some exercises are to be practiced daily for an extended period of time (keeping a journal), and some can be accomplished in a just a few minutes.Many of the exercises ask the actor to watch clips from movies.

Each exercise presented has questions for the actor to ask himself, different variations of completing the exercise (allowing the exercise to have more than one life), and states the purpose of the exercise.The book is divided into 21 acting elements (improv, physical, emotional recall, vocal, characterization, imagination, etc.) with 3-6 exercises in each element.

Unlike older acting games books on the market, this one utilizes a multi-media approach and is not geared toward group rehearsal.

I personally didn't find it too useful because I think any average person already knows half of the information in that book. He didn't list any names of agents or photograghers, etc. in his book, but I guess there were good points. He was very honest and up front, telling the readers what to expect and what agents and producers are looking for in an actor/actress. He talked about the different types of actors, like screen actors, stage actors, and extras, but didn't go into a great detail about anything in particular. Overall, I'd say it's an okay beginning book, but I would actually recommmend Acting is Everything, 9th edition over Acting Professionally because it is much more thorough, helpful and informative.
