5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous resource and very readable
The word "comprehensive" may have been invented to describe this book - it definitely is an encyclopedia, not just in its alphabetic listing and cross-references, but also in its breadth of knowledge.Unless you area bodywork specialist, this book probably has much more than you would everwant to know about what seem to be some very esoteric practices. However,it is a fabulous resource to use to find out about alternative therapies(the section on acupuncture was the most comprehensive and easy to read Ihave come across in all my research) and Stillerman has a wonderfulbibliography and resource listing (many resources have been transcribedinto my Complementary Medicine Resources list).Reading it from cover tocover as I did was an interesting experience in that it showed theinterrelated qualities and history of many types of bodywork (someindividuals had the same teachers or came out of the same schools ofthought and developed in their own direction).Stillerman does not judgeany of the bodywork methods she reviews so it is up to the reader to decidewhether or not a particular method would be right for their condition (thisis where the bibliography and resource list is invaluable for furtherinvestigation). An excellent resource but unless you're a massage/bodyworkprofessional, you probably won't want to purchase this book - just borrowit from the library. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Nice tone, but not user-friendly
I got this book out of the library hoping for a basic, user-friendly, not overly hocus-pocus introduction to acupressure. The book almost delivers. Bauer has an easy-going writing style and doesn't pooh-pooh western medicine. Her write-ups often refer to other forms of treatment as well (herbal, diet changes, etc.). I like the holistic approach.

The problem is that the book needed a very careful once-over by a good editor to make sure the suggested acupressure treatments and associated drawings matched up, and sadly, they often don't. It's really frustrating to read, for instance, that one should try "Conception Vessel 21" to ease a sore throat & then not be able to locate that point on any of the charts. It's just missing. This happens distressingly often. It also would have been helpful to have an index of points with detailed descriptions of how to find them. The charts aren't always very clear. I'm sure there's something better out there on this subject. ... Read more

Product Description
Acupressure therapy has evolved from dianxue, which is a traditional Chinese martial art technique of hitting an opponent at a selected acupoint on the body, so as to momentarily block the flow of blood and energy and cause unconsciousness. Based on the same theory, an acupressure therapist skillfully presses the same acupoint to promote the flow of blood and energy and heal an injury.

The therapy is administered by percussing, pressing and/or massaging selected acupoints and stimulation-lines of the body. It is effective for treating common illnesses and complicated diseases such as cerebral palsy and polio.

In clinical application, the therapy requires no drugs or instruments. It is safe, easy to learn, and can be practiced almost anywhere. ... Read more

Product Description

Treat the cause of an illness, not just its symptoms--the holistic way! With this ancient Chinese form of medicine, you just apply pressure to problem areas to facilitate healing and restore bodily harmony. Think of your body as a map, divided into various zones. Each zone corresponds to an organ; acupressure influences that organ, rebalancing its energy. You'll find detailed diagrams that show you exactly where to apply pressure; the best times to stimulate or sedate an area for optimal effect, how to stroke to get the result you want; and rules about how often and for how long you can treat yourself. There's a specific treatment for every physical and emotional complaint: relieve asthma, allergies, anxieties, back trouble, colds, depression, headaches, heartburn, joint pain, loss of appetite, menopause, nervousness, skin ailments, stomachaches, weight problems--even something as seemingly minor as cold feet!In addition to the actual acupressure methods, you'll find an analysis of the possible underlying causes of each illness and suggestions for lifestyle changes. Whether used alone, or in tandem with aromatherapy, it will change your life and your health forever!96 pages (all in color), 6 7/8 x 8.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better living is not through drugs!
The book "Relieving Pain with Acupressure" is a short and sweet book -- to the point, telling you what you need to know to relieve pain, without overwhelming you with too much information. It tells you how toperform acupressure and provides diagrams to follow. The book covers over50 common pain/ailment complaints. They are alphabetized and one per page,so most things are very easy to find.I was very pleased to find that someattention is also given to children's disorders. The author also includesaromatherapy information for each ailment and optimal time frames thathealing can occur. Overall, I like this book except for the fact thatthere are only skeletal diagrams and no pictures of the points on a realperson.I found it hard to translate some of the acupressure points fromthe skeleton to my body. That is why I think this book is best as acompanion book to other acupressure books, not a sole source ofinformation. The other acupressure book I have is "Acupressure'sPotent Points", by Michael Reed Gach. That book makes the points mucheasier to find, since it has photos of real people demonstrating thepoints. It, however, covers neither the aromatherapy nor the children'sdisorders. Both books contain information on ailments that are not in theother. That is why I like them both. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Author wants to advise readers of this book
I am the author of this book. I feel this is a very good book, however the publishers made a serious error in editing when they did this book, and did not send galley proofs to me before publication. Warning: the meridian charts are not correct. The POINTS on each chart, eg. key points on the stomach meridian, ARE CORRECT, but the meridian lines showing the paths of the meridians are not correct. The reader should refer to the text, and, perhaps, buy a seperate set of charts. P. S. people who have used this book tell me it is very helpful. Helen Saul ... Read more
