Review of the CD Rom
I bought the CD hoping I could have the information on several computers.I have had the book for 10 years.

You cannot use this CD on several computers.You have to download the software and use the CD to get information.I'm very disappointed about that.If I had know that, I would have just ordered a second copy of the book to keep at the office, instead of this CD.

This CD is not very functional.You can't just scroll down with your mouse, you have to click on the toolbar or hit the page down button.

Giovanni, of course, is the master.He is a wonderful author and is responsible for educating thousands of Western acupuncturists.I graduated 7 years ago and still use all his books.

In case you are wondering, he is also a very sweet and funny person.I went to his seminar and was very happy to find out that such a genius can be so humble and funny.He always admits he doesn't know everything and that is rare in authors of Chinese Medicine books.;)

Buy the book, not the CD!

OK ... but not the colour on the cover ...
I initially dove into this book, very well laid out and attractive but don't be deceived it's not the be all of diagnosis despite it's mammoth number of pages.As far as I've been trained, he's about 70% of the full story ... definately a wonderful introduction to TCM's internal medicine but not everything you need to know.His appendix pages on western differentiation are very welcomed, but are quite basic.Many people in TCM are not so interested in Western meds. but they are very important so thumbs up on the inclusion.

It's not a bad book, but it's not so great as the Chinese texts I have in my library who give you the same info at a fraction of the cost, less room on your shelf and a lot less speculation.

Thanks to Maciocia we have a solid intro to TCM, for that I think we are all indebted ... but his factory of TCM books are a bit much considering you can get the real info from the source in Chinese Textbooks with both Chinese and English in them.

A Mixed Bag
This book is huge, even though it's only about 34 diseases.It's filled with case studies that easily transform into CA state board test questions.

My study partner went through and pulled every one of these case studies out to memorize them.I found myself doing the same, since I disagreed with Giovanni's diagnosis about 25% of the time... I had to memorize his diagnosis anyway.In one case, he got no result, and consulted with a Chinese doctor, who diagnosed the patient the way I had when I firsted saw the signs and symptoms!

What's really infuriating is when he uses a rationale to diagnose something one way in one place, but then doesn't consistently apply that in other cases.

So, we are required to know Giovanni's opinions and diagnosis style even if they may be wrong.It would have been nice to see - in a reference book - a separation between mistaken treatments and ideal/accurate treatments.

Also, there are short sections on western diagnosis in some diseases... but be careful, because biomedicine frequently revises its understandings.This is NOT your source for clinical biomedical info.It may be easy to understand, but may not be up to date or accurate.

There is an interesting section on distal points and their target areas.

As with Giovanni's book, the Foundations of Chinese Medicine, it's not always clear if his ideas come from classical CM or from his own mind.I'd caution the reader to balance their understanding with the works of Wiseman, Deadman, and Sionneau. ... Read more

Must read for those interested in Emotions
If you have looked at different ways of accessing and understanding a person's psyche or emotional being this book is a must have. Great visuals to help one learn, its like being in a classroom

Well structured, Broadly researched,Excellent resource.
Highly consistent with the style of Maciocia's other foundational works in oriental medicine, acupuncture and herbology -- this one is very well organized, the text is crisp and succinct.It contains many clarifying illustrations plus substantial details on the "how-to" for diagnosis, differentiation and treatment of mental disharmonies using acupuncture and/or herbs.It is a great starting place, even for persons relatively new to the Chinese medicine perspective to these disciplines.Yet it is constructed to serve as a rapidly scanned handbook on return visits with many summary visuals (drawings and textbox highlights inserted by the publisher).

There are several strong points for its use:
1.Inclusion of basic pulse and tongue patterns relevant to mental/emotional health questions
2.Discussion of constiutional or five element patterns
3.Detailed discussion for westerners of the components of the psyche in chinese medicine, integrating diverse sources including Buddhism, Confuscianism, and Jungian psychology
4.Good review of ancient and modern views regarding emotions and the "self"; including the ancient greeks,classic western european philosophers and modern neurophysiology in a manner that can be compared and potentially integrated with eastern philosophy.
5.Useful appendices including a bibliography on the classics of chinese medicine which outlines what each of these contain should the reader wish to pursue them.
6.Detailed coverage regarding common mental health issues from the perspective of Chinese Medicine (depression, anxiety, insomnia, bipolar patterns, night terrors, and attention-deficity hyperactivity disorder). These are primarily addressed from a diagnostic framework consistent with TCM, but there is still a substantial section relating to the channel concepts. It does not have chapters specifically for the severe psychoses (understandably as these likely require a more complete shift to and/or coordination with western modalities).
7.Its one of the few resources which includes not only case studies but some clinical trials, often with control groups (placebo or pharmacological controls)coming from both western medicine and oriental medicine journals for each of the common mental health issues listed in #6 above.
8.Good diagrams to remind the reader about point locations are included very close to where these are mentioned in the text.Extra points are defined and illustrated when applicable, thus diminishing the need for newcomers to routinely keep a point atlas nearby, just in order to follow the flow of the text.
9.A great deal of effort was clearly expended to create very memorable drawings using modern concepts such as circuit boards and town maps to illustrate how some of the point combinations or meridian interventions might work.Several of these seemed to settle into my memory in a way that had not worked before.


Potential weaknesses seemed relatively minor to me but included:

1.At times it was hard to discriminate what information might be coming from his translating classics versus drawing on his own opinions and clinical experience, though obviously the latter is substantial.
2.The written text and illustrations are in a 2-color format, black for the standard text and red/maroon for highlighted text as well as frequently interposed summary boxes.When I am tired -- the red is somewhat irritating and limits my ability to continue focused reading or scanning.I am used to red denoting serious cautions or extremely critical highlights -- here its use is more general.Probably a publishers' choice to distinguish this one from his other books that are in a different color.I can appreciate the symbolic connection between red and heart, mind, psyche, etc.However the ease of readabililty for me is reduced a little.
3.Some of the "summaries" and "clinical notes" feel overdone to me -- duplicating text I just read one paragraph before.I recognize that once I've finished several chapters, this provides a rapid overview of the most important points to be more easily relocated by scanning.However, on my first pass while trying to just read through the text it slowed me down slightly.


Overall Maciocia's book is well conceived and executed.It also serves as a nice complementary work to Shen: Psycho-Emotional Aspects of Chinese Medicine.They each have differing strengths.Maciocia's is likely to be more appealing to those just learning about chinese medicine or clinical psychology/psychiatry or those who want an easily accessible reference handbook for direct clinical application.Rossi's is more likely to appeal to a veteran in these fields who seeks more detailed philosophical and academic discourse.

Skimming the surface
As a student, I am hungry for a richer and more clearly explained method of working with the calendar(s) within the context of TCM.I was hoping this text would provide me with simple, clear and full explanations of astrological acupuncture.Instead, I am left with a taste and the hope for fulfillment of my wish elsewhere.

I did find myself enjoying the list of Taoist Chinese Medical contributors as it was a lovely historical remembrance and a deepening of my respect for the elders and ancestors of this healing path.

Disappointing
Unfortunately the book is a poor replica of the original.It is full of mistakes.It is supposed to teach us Yamamoto's scalp acupuncture, and uses the Master's name, but does not convey the same content, or is full of mistakes.Noticing that the landmarks are wrong even on the flash card, I wasted my money.

Fairly Helpful Book
This book is different from what I expected and, if I had been a little bit more on the ball about understanding it's contents, I probably wouldn't have bought it.I was looking for a book on scalp acupuncture that involved stimulating the parts of the brain involved motor/sensory and other neurological centers.This is not that type of book.It doesn't necessarily take into account the various centers of the brain, instead it looks at the scalp as a microcosm of the body much like ear and hand acupuncture.From there Yamamoto designated points of the scalp much like you would find when identifying points on the ear.

If you are interested in learning this type of scalp acupuncture, then this is the book for you.The book is kind of confusing at first, but it has a dvd that helps clarify things up.

Helpful for organizing the broad options to address pain problems utilizing meridian-based acpuncture approaches..
A short summary book -- primarily based on synthesis of trigger point therapy with older forms of acupuncture (meridian-based rather than TCM style diagnosis and treatment).Places heavy emphasis on physical examination of the meridians and pain locations.He provides helpful diagrams of relevant common trigger pionts within these zones and documents the relevant muscular anatomy.

His strategies are more aimed at disturbances in musculoskeletal tissue (or in unobstructing the flow of Qi) rather than the standard TCM diagnostic categories.Thus it does not rely as much on tongue and pulse findings -- a feature that may be preferred by some readers and frustrating to others.His three proposed dominant zones for planning pain management are the major Yang Meridians (Tai Yang, Shao Yang and Yang Ming).He discusses the interrelationship of these to the paired extraordinary meridians (as well as tendinomuscular, cutaneous, divergent, etc) and provides recommendations on major point "zones or regions" to examine and possibly treat.

In general, he stressed choosing the functional points of maximum tenderness rather than attempting anatomically precise location (relevant safety factors still in effect) or rather than points proposed for TCM or 5-element considerations.He does offer for each of these 3 major Yang zones some key yin supporting treatments with which he might supplement his overall protocol, but these are clearly secondary.

I am not sure I would have recognized the benefits of this book early in my training, and I might have been a little put off by aspects of his writing style.After more experience, I found it to be an excellent rapid refresher course of basic principles for meridian acupuncture; and along the way it added significantly to my own internal synthesis of the vast array of treatment paradigms in oriental and western acupuncture.It will continue to be of value to me on return reading -- a source to explore over and over again when contemplating a difficult case.

The Missing Piece
I am an acupuncturist in Southern California and I have taken several workshop intensives in different styles of acupuncture:Master Tung's style, Kiiko Matsumoto, Balance Method, Japanese Styles, etc, etc.On top of that, I have read every book I could get my hands on trying to discern the piece missing from my repertoire that would help me fully resolve the tough cases and chronic pain that virtually all of my patients have.This simple little book is it.It's really almost embarrassingly simple and I almost feel like an idiot for not thinking of it myself.

Acupuncturists, I have found, get very dogmatic and hard-headed when it comes different styles:The reviewer who gave the book a 1 star rating (twice!How did he vote twice?!) seems quite ignorant in his comments.First, Mark Seem is not a "scientist", he is an acupuncturist with a small mountain of experience and credentials.He respects many different styles of acupuncture and draws from them to develop a style that is pragmatic and effective.How truly American.Maybe this is what makes the reviewer angry - that Mr. Seem did not get the "real" acupuncture bequeathed to him from a mysterious sage in the hills of China.The bottom line is that Mr. Seem's ideas both correlate with ancient principles and match modern anatomical and physiological knowledge - and they just plain work (a novel idea in TCM style acupuncture!).Just after implementing a couple of principles from this book, I was solving some some of my toughest cases.It didn't violate anything in the classics, in fact, it proved them true.I say all of this, to encourage any would-be reader to dismiss the two (actually the same!) bad reviews as they are non-sensical.

My only problem with the book is that the cover is kind of crap.It curled up on me the first reading.It always irritates me to pay $30 for a short paperback.This is a book deserves to be hard-bound anyway.With that said, it's probably the best $30 bucks I've spent in my acupuncture education.

I had really high hopes for this book.It really needs to greatly improve its index, as it should be more diversified for those who read just portions of books at times.His writing style really killed me..... There are some positives. If you don't know trigge point therapy and are an acupunturist, this book could be helpful.I enjoy meridian therapy, but he kills me with the dull writing style.

Catchy title, not so innovative
I don't want to insult Mark Seem, as I might want to study with him in the future. The book's title may be the publisher's choice, and not Seem's, I don't know; if you are expecting a grand union of osteopathy, acupuncture, and myofascial tensegrity, this isn't it. But if you can recognize and value a few real jewels of useful acupuncture therapy, it's a very good book. Perhaps Dr. Seem suffers a little bit from the common disease of many who have years of experience; I'm refering to his statement that his mentor, Dr. Nguyen Van Nghi, was "wrong" about the yin and yang of principal channels and tendinomuscular channels. I suggest that Dr. Seem put on his "beginner's mind" again and look deeper. He tries to show that he has invented something new, when all he is doing is applying Dr. Van Nghi's "tendinomuscular protocol" to the six great channels (taiyang, shaoyang, yangming, etc). He acts as though he was the first person to ever have this idea, which just isn't true. Dr. Seem may be a great acupuncturist, a great teacher, and get great results with neuro-musculo-skeletal issues, yet there comes a point when innovation loses its root, and just puts on a show. The book is worth a read, and will give many TCM practitioners a real "aha!" experience. But for students of Nguyen Van Nghi, Seem's book will probably be ho-hum.

Refreshing
I trained in acupuncture some 25 years ago: at a time when contemporary chinese rigidity was just beginning to creep in and edge traditional practices on to the sidelines. Unfortunately, it has since come to dominate, negating the art and skill of the practitioner to the point where he or she is effectively redundant and software can diagnose and prescribe. Some people may enjoy being treated by a computer. I'm not one of them.

Any book that pushes both experienced and would-be therapists into thinking differently has to be good! You don't have to believe every theory or strategy, but it is healthy to contemplate alternative possibilities and even try them.

By the way, is it my imagination or do the negative reviews appear to be written by the same none too literate reviewer? ... Read more

good book ...but!
I am an Acupuncture Physician in Florida and I got this book to take care of my dog. This book is not for beginners ..try 4 paws 4 directions for starts.
Following up on the book I went to Dr. Xie's website [..] and wanted to order some herbs for my dog. Simple right? Nope, they would not sell me any herbs because I am not a vet.

So given another chance I would not buy this book. There are other Vet Acupuncture books that are just as good (more reviewed) if not better. I would have not given this guy my money given his position of not serving all his reader

Xie's Veterinary Acupuncture
I used the book to treat my two dogs. One dog I treated for itchy ears and nasal congestion, and the results were immediate relief. The other dog I treated for mania and hyperactivity with temors and the results were great. I used an energy point stimilator/indicator as I am not a vet or acupuncturist. I found the book easy to read and the illustrations clear. The points recommended for treatment worked well for my dogs issues. I will try to find the chinese herbal remedies recommended as well. ... Modern Chinese Approach with empirical data and ancient theory to support taking it seriously.
This intriguing book appears to be going out of print.I hope it is saved for future practitioners at least through Kindle access.

The technique is clearly modern, about 40 years old now, and developed in China as a simplification of each of the 12 primary channels into a single command point (usually the luo-connecting point) accessed by a transverse needle just under the skin.It has some analogous logic and therapeutic properties to the modern technique of Chinese Scalp Acupuncture which likewise utilizes a very limited number of locations for a broad range of applications for which a transverse needle is threaded under the scalp.The 12 body locations treat not only pain but seem applicable to a wider variety of "internal organ conditions" than Chinese Scalp Acupuncture, given that the latter excels primarily for pain and neurologic conditions.

The author does a very nice job succinctly summarizing the technique.She discusses the possible means by which it might work both from the standpoint of ancient chinese theoretical foundations about the 12 meridians and their distal command points, and from the perspective of more modern ideas about signal-processing -- particularly those special features within skin and their embryologic derivations/interconnections.

Despite the age of the book, the brief descriptions of each illness or syndrome in both western medical terms and chinese diagnostic categories based on TCM diagnosis was useful.I did not find much to argue with at least from a western standpoint.

I was very pleased to see an attempt to include initial outcome data for every illness/syndrome that was included.In most cases there are summary tables listing the number of persons, sometimes by gender, duration of illness, with total cases and then by degree of improvement.Occasionally there are limited comparisons with control subjects or other techniques.However, in most cases the statistics are limited to percentages of responders versus nonresponders; because there are only rarely the appropriate control groups to allow inferential statistics.Thus, it is not possible to separate out the natural course of an illness that might have resolved anyway.Yet, for many of these it would be reasonable to hypothesize that there was potential merit not too much different from what we have to work with in clinical situations.There are examples of a protracted illness or long-duration pain problem (2 or more years) without response to other medications, herbal treatments or interventions including TCM acupuncture, untilthis technique was attempted -- then in a matter of 10 daily sessions or less there were recognizable improvements.

Obviously more clinical data with control groups, within-subject designs, and objectively measured outcomes is needed.Nonetheless, what this ambitious and meticulous author gathered still exceeds that which is available in one orderly collection for the "accepted strategies" of body acupuncture in the majority ofpopular textbooks, ancient or modern.

It was not done by a well-financed publisher, so understandably it is missing some of the niceties of design and layout expected in the age of computerized publishing.The remaining books out there should probably be less expensive than the $65 or so, as listed now.

I plan on revising my review after more time to work directly with the technique.If I find it to be applicable and successful in my clinical setting, I'm likely to raise the rating to a 5.This one might just be a sleeping treasure. I note that it was recognized favorably at the time of its publication by a former president of the NCCAOM and an executive director of the AAOM.

Excellent Western approach
This is a book that explains acupuncture from a western medical perspective.It also gives advice on how to help people through acupuncture.Dr. Ulett believe that acupuncture is useful for the treatment of pain, and some other disorders as well, because it stimulates the production and release of natural painkillers in the body.He dispenses with all the classical "mumbo jumbo" about chi and meridians and focuses on how the most effective acupuncture points correspond to important nerve centers.He is an advocate of electric stimulation of acupuncture points to greatly increase the acupuncture effect.

Dr. Ulett was a medical school professor of mine and gave us an introductory lecture on acupuncture at St. Louis University Medical School.Although trained as a psychiatrist, he got the first NIH grant to study acupuncture in the 1970s and was actively practicing it the last time I met with him.He is a very smart guy who has given this a lot of thought and practice.

Excellent Reference Source to which I've already returned many times
This is an very solidly designed, broadly based work on the major microsystems of acupuncture prepared by 3 European MDs who have integrative medicine backgrounds featuring acupuncture as well as other disciplines.The majority of the book (two-thirds) is devoted to the principles, history and application of auricular acupuncture -- providing details on the origin/system to which the point belongs (Nogier's, Bahr's, Chinese), highly detailed localization information including mostly color photos and zoomed closeups of the human ear.These preserve depth clues and the 3-dimensional nature of the points better than the 2 most common alternative products.

Theese are:
Auriculotherapy Manual: Chinese and Western Systems of Ear Acupuncture by Terry Oleson, Ph.D.
and
Ear Acupuncture: A Precise Pocket Atlas by Beatte Strittmatter, M.D.

The didactic information regarding the logic of point selection and application to treatment of representative major illnesses is helpful, including the extensive highlighted detail on addiction and disorders of locomotion. There are also guides for using the projection of lines between more easily recognized landmarks and common points to locate the most obscure ones.Neither this text nor the one by Terry Oleson attempt to disciminate points most suited for using gold versus silver needles -- that is a strategy featured in other schools and detailed in Strittmatter's atlas.

The book serves primarily as a comprehensive coverage of the auricular system.However the last 100 pages is divided between the most common alternative microsystems and provides substantial detail; enough to serve as a solid reference and atlas for summarizing these, but most likely insufficient for beginners learning the remaining systems.Nonetheless, just like for the ear there are very well-designed and labelled color photos of the human body to assist in accurate point location.

Dr. Helms is an excellent writer and makes the topic of acupuncture and how an acupuncturist thinks clear to the lay person reader. terrific and accessible
I will also be recommending this book to friends. I'm not a physician, but this readable introduction to acupuncture has given me a whole new way to understand and take care of myself. Dr. Helms explains that there's a lot more to acupuncture than needles. By assessing what type of person you are, both physically and emotionally, you can be more prepared to recognize risks and maintain your health. Using examples, Dr. Helms shows how an acupuncture framework can address early signs of trouble and make sense of seemingly unrelated symptoms. He sees acupuncture and Western medicine as complementary, and he includes plenty of advice about simple ways to improve your lifestyle. I particularly enjoyed the dietary recommendations and the many tools that help you to figure out what type of person you are. I think this book would be a valuable resource for any person who is interested in finding new ways to stay healthy.

Good deep healing knowledge, clearly presented
Americans "discovered" acupuncture when Nixon went to China in 1972. I had acupuncture for the first time in the 1980s when it was still looked upon as a "fringe" therapy. I knew very little about it, but it worked. That's all that mattered to me.

I had no idea there was so much more to acupuncture beyond the needles and the moxa, but this book presents a thousand years of mind-and-body health wisdom in a clear, understandable way. This guy's a doctor, an MD and a professor at Stanford U, who has been training other doctors in acupuncture for decades. His approach is to honor and respect the traditional medical wisdom, but he supports and expands it with modern scientific info. He's treated lots of patients, he knows his stuff, and he explains the whole wellness philosophy that's at the heart of acupuncture.
