5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Japanese Acupuncture
This is a great book for those who use Meridian therapy in thier clinic, this can be seen from some of the authors of this book Ikeda Masakazu and Shudo Denmei. The fact it uses the term traditional in the title simply indicates that the sources for this book/Meridian therapy are from the classical texts of Chinese traditional medicine such as Su Wen and Ling Shu. This reflects the common use of the word traditional in the names of many of the Japanese acupuncture societies in Japan. The book fills in many of the gaps that Shodu's book did not, remembering that Meridian therapy was first introduced to those who had no knowlege of TCM, this is not the case today with many acupuncturist's having a grounding in modern TCM.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not actually traditional japanese Medicine
This book is titled TRADITIONAL Japanese Acupuncture. Unfortunatelty it is not really that at all though it may contain elements of some traditional Japanese styles. It seems that the esteemed authors have made an attempt to fuse Chinese TCM with elements of Japanese Meridian Therapy and have come up with something that to many Meridian Therapy practitioners (myself included)seems unrecognizable as TRADITIONAL anything. I do not mean to criticize the authors theories or his approach but to call this traditional Japanese acupncture in any sense seems a bit of an inaccurate statement.

Chinese TCM and Japanese Meridian Therapy are both relatively new (20th century in fact) traditions though they are based on very old Chinese medical texts. This work however represents nothing I nor anyone I have spoken with in the field of Japanese Medicine can call traditional. Indeed it seems an entirely new approach based on two older systems.

There is a movement going on in some circles to create a TJM. However, the Japanese tradtions are so diverse that I think this would be a mistake. Certainly it could be argued that in the creation of TCM in China much was lost. The works of Dr. Tin Yau So or (Miriam Lee's book on) Master Tong's works are examples of affective approaches that are no longer taught in China due to the forced standardization of acupuncture. I hope this book is not an attempt to standardize Japanese acupuncture.

This may be a very good approach, I do not know, I just wish the author hadn't tried to call it traditional. ... Read more

This pioneering book unites both Western and Traditional Chinese medicine to provide a comprehensive overview of depression from both clinical perspectives, and to present a step-by-step methodology for the evaluation and acupuncture treatment of this condition, using an experimentally tested protocol. In addition, it addresses fundamental issues in acupuncture research and offers guidelines for the design of acupuncture treatment studies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ground-breaking Initial Work.
The authors have chosen a fairly specific niche. They accomplished their purpose very well.Given the vast number of people now afflicted with depression in our society or else will be at some time in their lifespan, and given its toll on health, quality of life, and on basic economic survival -- this is not a narrow niche. It has broad applicability to us all.The authors' intent was to create a solid communication bridge between practitioners of western & eastern medicine (especially with respect to acupuncture)in order to: a) define the nature of depression as understood in both paradigms, and b) to create a standardized and research-"able" protocol for assessing acupuncture's efficacy for treating the more common forms of depression.

In addition, they hoped to make it highly readable to persons entering the exploration from either a western or eastern background.Again, I feel they succeeded nicely. My impression, however, was that they invested a great deal more effort to explain mostly TCM-derived potential mechanisms for qi, blood, and organ disharmonies as they might apply to various manifestations of depression. They freely admit doing so was a significant challenge to generalize from either ancient chinese thought or the more modern TCM constructions onto a "western disease", because "major depression" is not historically a chinese diagnosis.Yet, classic Chinese Medicine does employ a concept fairly close to bipolar or manic-depressive states and when relevant, these understandings have been included. On the whole the book may seem more enlightening to a "western" reader wishing to gain a broaderperspective on the illness from an eastern standpoint.I am not yet sure whether practitioners of oriental medicine would likewise feel that their needs were met to receive sufficient details regarding the western understanding of depression either from psychotherapuetics, neurosciences, or neuropharmacology.

Given that these research methods are focused on acupuncture strategies, the last half of the book is approprately devoted to outlining a systematic method for pattern diagnoses, tables of the relevant symptoms, physical exam findings (pulse and tongue diagnoses), and primary plus supplemental points to use in treatment. They also do an excellent job in detailing the rationale behind these assessment and treatment approaches. This is understandably difficult to come up with a system whereby multiple observers (coming at it either from an eastern or western background) would have a reasonable chance at arriving at a replicable assessment. It is"meaty" book with little fluff.Their work pioneer work sets a high standard for subsequent research to follow.

I very much appreciated their conscientious effort to balance needs of scientific inquiry (systematizing and standardizing as much as reasonably possible) with the reality that humans are incredibly diversified and complex, and most will ultimately refuse to be stuffed into tidy categories.Yet it was a commendable effort, a very reasonable starting point which will have to be verified and extended in clinical use.Their approach seems to be structured in a manner which respectfully incorporated chinese diagnostic and treatment concepts in their own terms, rather than cut and pasted to satisfy a particular prized western model.

Several influential leaders appear to have been consulted in order to cover the range of theories in Chinese Medicine. I believe that aclear and honest effort was made to avoid bias favoring western theories. Thus, the works of Bob Flaws, Mark Seems and Maciocia are acknowledged as substantive resources.I was a bit disappointed that there was much heavier emphasis on TCM constructs rather than on meridian-based therapy models or French-Chinese Energetics. Thus, if I wished for Volume 2 -- it would be one that gave attention to strategies which address more thoroughly the movements of qi either through the 5 phases or the merdians.

Even more importantly, I would like to see future research protocols which intentionally integrate patient-participation in their own treatment -- such as qigong techniques that supplement acupuncture effects between treatments. There is a lot to be said for self-empowerment as an antidote for depression.Regardless whether the practitioner is handing out pills or needles -- the person suffering from depression often needs an effective tool that operates under their own power and on their own timetable!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting!!!
"Acupuncture in the treatment of Depression" is interesting, because link east and western therapeutics. ... Read more

Product Description

Praise for the hardcover edition:

“[Eckman] traces acupuncture through Chinese antiquity with a very readable clarity absent in other scholarly accounts of the same material. This story blossoms in the twentieth-century convergence of acupuncture traditions in Europe, and stands as the only articulate comprehensive account of this migration.”—J. Helms, American Academy of Medical Acupuncture Review

“A product of monumental research into the tale of how acupuncture has been transmitted from East to West.”—Alan Hext, European Journal of Oriental Medicine

Acupuncture now enjoys immense popularity as a major form of alternative healing in the West. Once considered mysterious and exotic, acupuncture dates from before the first century BC and the Huang Di Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic), one of ancient China’s earliest philosophical and medicinal texts. What makes it so popular today? How did the traditions of acupuncture evolve, migrate, and adapt to different societies worldwide?

Originally published in 1996 to great acclaim, this updated paperback edition of In the Footsteps of the Yellow Emperor offers a fascinating and highly readable account of one doctor’s personal and professional quest to explore the healing traditions of Asia, its rich historical lineage, and its subsequent transmission to contemporary Europe and North America. It is a must-have book in the healing arts for all practitioners and general-interest readers.

Peter Eckman, MD, PhD (New York University), MAc (College of Traditional Acupuncture, Leamington Spa, England) is editor of The Essential Book of Traditional Chinese Medicine and co-author of Closing the Circle: Lectures on the Unity of Traditional Oriental Medicine. He has a medical practice in San Francisco.

2-0 out of 5 stars mmm.....
i was quite excited to get this book and see what it was all about. to be honest i dont see it as being that great of a resource for a few different reasons. the theory is essentially TCM theory and point locations/indications with a few little tidbits of ayurveda thrown in on top of it. keep in mind too that tcm theory, although containing SOME of the knowledge of chinese medicine for the past few thousand years has really only been around for half a century. a great deal of this book could just as easily have been a tcm point location/indication text and one would never know the difference. im not sure where the author's training came from , but its much too close to be coincidence. this book may be useful for a trained acupuncturist to try and incorporate some ayurvedic principles in to their work, but really i think there are much better places to look first for this, david frawley's marma book comes to mind. for an ayurvedic practitioner, i obviously dont think this book would allow one to be ready to start needling patients, and hopefully that isnt the intention of the author. there where a few interesting parts of this book, the historical aspects and traditional needle design in particular was entertaining. and the getting an answer to the puzzling question that has been running through my mind of where ether and air fit in to the chinese 5 elements, and wood and metal vis versa was also cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a lot I did not know about ayurveda.
I got this book for my dad and he really loves it. He has been practising Su-Jok accupuncture for the past 10 years.
There are a lot of things included in this book that he did not know about. He claims that the knowledge in this book will be useful in his practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Subtle surgery...
Fianlly a book integrating the most complete system of health care and human undrstanding (Ayurveda) with the art and science of Acupuncture.TCM in the west is now not much different then allopathic western medical science - only treating disease, disregarding the whole of man..especially the subtle/causal bodies.Ayurvedic acupuncture provides a method of diagnosis and treatment from a fully holistic perspective...understanding that true healing only occurs at the level of consciousness. It is through the shifts in awareness and invoking of the divine inner flame that we can truly "heal" and once again return to the source of God/Love within.Ayurveda is the mother of healing..from which all medicine arose...and all will return. ... Product Description
Acupuncture can be used for treating a wide range of eye disorders, from conjunctivitis and hay fever to glaucoma and macular degeneration. In some cases, such as degenerative diseases of the retina, there is no effective treatment in conventional medicine, while in others, like acute conjunctivitis, acupuncture offers a cure which is quicker and more effective than other modalities. Acupuncture for the Eyes is a practical manual that can be used by any competent acupuncturist to expand the scope of their practice to include disorders of the eyes. The book provides clear, step-by-step guidelines for diagnosis and treatment coupled with a discussion of the results that can be expected. At a minimum, all acupuncturists should know how effective acupuncture can be in treating conditions of the eye, even though they are not commonly treated in Western acupuncture clinics at the present time. This will change as more acupuncturists become familiar with this important aspect of practice, and patients learn how helpful acupuncture can be in maintaining and restoring healthy eyes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the First Acupuncture Textbook
This translation is actually in its 2nd edition now.The first edition came out in a hard-cover, which can often be found in used book stores, under books that are too esoteric for the general population, and too expensive for the novice student.Almost 10 years after the first edition arrived, this paperback version does not fail to inspire the one who has discovered it.It's like a gem among common stones.
If you've tried reading the Nei-Jing: Su wen and Ling Shu, you may have already figured out that it's a conglomeration of 162 treatises, loosely organized and difficult to assimilate. The Jia Yi Jing, first published in 282 CE., derives most of its information directly from the Nei-Jing (2nd-3rd century B.C.E).So why spend more money on another version of the Nei-Jing?The difference may be best understood with these words taken straight from the Translator's Preface: "While the expositions on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and the pathophysiology of disease in the Ling Shu and Su Wen are indeed instructive these books are not oriented toward clinical practice and most often do not contain therapies for specific, clinically encountered problems. The Jia Yi Jing, on the other hand, is a clinically oriented manual arranged in a manner that a student or practitioner can easily access. It presents the reader with the signs and symptoms of a given disease, and then provides us with acupuncture moxibustion treatment choices.Having made these choices, the Jia Yi Jing then provides us with a clear description of what to expect from its formulas and their relevant points, the depths of needle insertions, the number of cones allowed in moxibustion, and the manipulation of the needles, etc."
Furthermore, while the Su Wen records only one hundred sixty acupoints... the Jia Yi Jing adds one hundred eighty-nine points to this list, increasing the total number to three hundred forty-nine points... Texts on classical Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion published in the fifteen hundred years since Huang-fu Mi's death have added only twelve channel points to the number contained in the Jia Yi Jing." (iv translator's preface). This elucidates the importance of this text, not only in light of the fact that it was the first textbook on classical acupuncture, but also given its position as a milestone in the systemic classification and application of acupuncture in general.
Organized into 12 sections, the following are my personal labels for each one: 1. Theory2. Channels3. Points4. Pulses 5. Needling technique6. Diagnosis7,8,9. Contraction of disease in the 6 channels and Zang/Fu10. Bi-Pain disorders11.Severe disorders12. EENT and miscellaneous disorders.
Finally, the other source of the Jia Yi Jing material is the now lost Ming Tang Zhen Liu Zhi Yao (The Acupuncture and Moxibustion Treatment Essentials of the Enlightening Hall), which was given much reverence in its day and is best preserved through the Jia Yi Jing.
If I could give this 6 stars, I would. My recommendation is that only serious acupuncture students/ practitioners should consider making this purchase. The paperback value is not great enough for collectors and the material is too dependant on having a TCM background for non-practitioners to make this investment.A better read for non-acupuncturists is "The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine: A New Translation of the Nei-Jing Suwen with Commentary" by Maoshing Ni.It reads more like a Taoist narrative. My personal recommendation for serious Nei-Jingers is Henry Lu's Nei-Jing and Nan-Jing in one volume, available from www.tcmcollege.com.Also, the Nguyen Van-Nghi group is making English translations of the Ling Shu available through www.jungtao.edu. ... They illustrate their descriptions with practical examples of what has worked and what has not.It outlines many of the key challenges in the field. These challenges relate to the nature of acupuncture and the gap between current research evidence and the actual experiences of acupuncturists in the field. By focusing the chapters on key research questions, rather than methods, the book has a user-friendly feel. Each chapter is easily accessible with brief explanations of research designs as well as vignettes of relevant past research. The book is based on a deep understanding of acupuncture, with its inherent complexity in practice, whether based on traditional principles or more modern concepts. By incorporating a more sophisticated understanding of the field, this book details a range of strategies aiming to develop the evidence base with the utmost rigour. Based on updated reviews and systematic analyses, the meridians are actually systems of physiological and pathological reflexes in the body, and acupuncture therapy is a type of reflexotherapy. The systems methodology, together with the authors’ clinical expertise of 40 years, is applied to raise the reproducibility of effectiveness in treating various indications of acupuncture, especially intractable cases. 5-0 out of 5 stars Chinese Acupuncture
This is a very interesting book clinically and historically.Soulie de Morant was an accomplished scholar, and obviously studied Chinese medicine in depth, including classical texts. He often quotes Yang Ji Zhou's "Zhen Jiu Da Cheng" as well as the "Yi Xue Ru Men".Some practitioners, notably Dr. Andrew Tseng, previously the district physician of Shanghai, spoke of Yang Ji Zhou as the pinnacle of acupuncture, and so it is of great value to have so many quotes from this under appreciated classic.Historically this book offers a wonderful opportunity to look into Chinese medicine in the fairly recent past significantly before modern communist standardization of the medicine. Soulie de Morant lived in China from 1901-1917.He practiced and promoted Chinese medicine for the rest of his life in France. Definitely a book worth exploring for practitioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on acupuncture
My medical training includes TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), Homeopathy and Pharmacy based medicine.
There are many diferent modalities of acupuncture in the world as well as subtypes of the main systems. Terminology can be very confusingin this field according to the author or location. Some reviewers may have limited views and we should discard bias comments because the world of medicine is not black and white. This is an outstanding work on acupuncture, written truly by a great man.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Problematic
I was very excited about this book when I encountered it as an acupuncture student, mainly because of the psychological indications given for the points, and because I had not found such interesting psychological info before in English.

However, subsequent learnings have dampened my enthusiasm:

1. This book uses terms and theories not found elsewhere in representations of authentic historical Chinese medicine.

2. This book, originally written in 1931, is blamed for the mistranslation of jing-luo as "meridians" and qi as "energy," and the closed-minded aberrance of French acupuncture. What I have heard, but have not been able to verify, is that this book left so many gaps in Chinese medicine that the French were forced to make up their own theories, and now they hold onto them even when they contradict newer more accurate translations of Chinese medical classics.

3. There is more and more historical psychological information available for acupuncturists and we needn't rely on this book alone for that.In fact, this book gives only indications for points without discussing the vessel-related reasons why those points work that way.For more on this, see books by Sionneau or Deadman.

5-0 out of 5 stars pre-Maoist-revision medical theory
I agree with the other reviews of this book - it is outstanding. One feature which should not be overlooked is that work was written in the 30s, and pre-dates the Maoist revisions of 'TCM' - there is still not a whole lot of material on the 'spiritual' aspects of points, etc., which many say were weeded out during the revisions, but it is still the most thorough textbook available on Chinese Medicine which is not largely shaped by the homogenizing efforts of the Cultural Revolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
An outstanding description of both the theory and the practice of Acupuncture. There are not many point locations charts and few from the French edition are reproduced. But the quality and the quantity of the text that describes those points makes up for the loss. If I could have only one book on Acupuncture, this one would be it. ... Read more

Product Description
This book marks the first original collection of acupuncture case histories in English. Included are over one hundred case histories contributed by prominent practitioners of acupuncture in China. The case histories represent a broad spectrum of disorders for which acupuncture is used in contemporary China. Each of the case histories provides a thorough discussion of the traditional Chinese diagnosis and syndrome differentiation, together with the points and techniques selected for treatment. The course of therapy is described, and alterations in the diagnosis and treatment regimen are analyzed. The results of treatment-both favorable and unfavorable-are noted. An introduction compares and contrasts many of the treatment techniques and types of points used in the cases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Insights for Acupuncturists
This is one of the books required by the California State Board. And it's the only one I enjoyed studying.

It was only used at our school by teachers for classroom use or testing purposes. However, it contains some advanced channel and pattern pathomechanisms... the kind we only get a little exposure to in English.

Occasionally a Chinese teacher will talk about something like this for which we have no literature (For example, my herbal teacher mentioned a pattern called "Dragon Fire" which was mentioned nowhere in the English literature), so I already suspected we were missing out on some pathomechanisms, etc.Acu Case Histories fills in some of the gaps.

Especially interesting is the section on neurology. There is some fascinating discussion of the Du meridian, its relationship to neurological problems, pathogens, and other meridians.

This book is acupuncture only... in fact, half the patients in the book had already tried biomedicine AND HERBAL MEDICINE without result. It's easy (with the basic training we get in school) to begin to find herbal medicine more powerful than acupuncture. This book will show you some of the ways in which acupuncture can exceed herbal medicine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Acupuncture Secrets is awesome!
Ok, so this is my own book, so the review is a bit biased.

So rather than tell you how good the book is, I will tell you a secret that's not listed in the description.

This book is 54 pages... probably 50 pages after the title, etc.

But the owners of the book are given a private website where another 70+ pages have been published!

Amazing content for an awesome price. ... Read more

Product Description
The Five Spirits are the Taoist map of the human psyche. The system provides a mythical view of the nervous system and forms the basis of Chinese medical psychology. It also describes a precise and efficient technology for spiritual transformation, the process through which a human being rediscovers their essential wholeness and innate connection to the divine.

The Five Spirits can be understood as the Taoist version of the Chakra System of Vedic India. Like the chakras, the spirits exist as centers of consciousness in the subtle body rather than as structures in the physical body. Just as each chakra relates to a particular level of consciousness, each spirit relates to a particular aspect of human awareness, a particular vibration or frequency of psychic energy. An understanding of the Five Spirits is the key that opens the doorway to the mysteries of Taoist psycho-spiritual alchemy. By taking advantage of the discoveries of Western archetypal psychology and new discoveries about the mind and nervous system, we can decipher the Five Spirits and reorganize the system in a way that has proven to be clinically invaluable in treating psychosomatic, emotional, and psychospiritual distress. ... It is the same exact information out there in many other books, but at an expensive price. If you never knew anything about alchemical acupuncture it would be a good book for you, but if you do, this book teaches you nothing new. It does have a beautiful cover.

Product Description
The field of pain research is rapidly expanding in both human and veterinary medicine, and has helped increase our understanding of acupuncture. However, many are still highly sceptical about the use of acupuncture and prefer for it to remain far from orthodox veterinary practice.

This book seeks to challenge common misgivings by showing how veterinary acupuncture works (for small and large animals), and why it should be established as an orthodox form of treatment.

Written from a Western approach, rather than a traditional Chinese Medicine approach, it explains the background and history of acupuncture and includes key information on safety aspects, understanding pain and how acupuncture can help, practical aspects such as types of needles and methods of restraint, and related techniques.

Not intended as a techniques manual, this book is a preparatory text for those considering taking an acupuncture course and those wishing to gain a solid understanding of the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, excellent review of modern acupuncture theory.
This book is great.I recommend it for humans interested in acupuncture, it isn't just for vets. Chapter 3 does a great job explaining how acupuncture works. The references are good. The illustrations are sketchy, literally, and the venn diagrams a bit silly, but other than that, I have nothing negative. It won't teach you how to do acupuncture, but if you are trying to understand how it works, it does a great job.Good summary of how pain works.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Introductory
An introductory text that will expose the reader to veterinary acupuncture but very little depth to the information. ... Read more
