5-0 out of 5 stars An incredibly helpful map for a frustrated mom
This book is an invaluable resource for anyone with a mathematically talented child. The elementary school system (at least where we live) is not prepared to develop math talent. To be fair, I do understand that resources are limited and they can only do so much. The curriculum is necessarily designed for all children, not just the few mathematically talented kids.My son was so bored, frustrated and disengaged he started to make careless errors and develop some other bad habits. With the help of this book, he is now taking online math courses through Johns Hopkins CTY.The public school he attends has made some modifications to partially incorporate this course into his math curriculum. In short, he's thriving!

This book also gave me the confidence that, yes, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to my son.For two years, we had been taking the "wait and see" approach since we were always assured his needs would be met.Two years later, we knew we needed to do something different but really didn't know what to do.If you are in this situation, get this book, use the tools it suggests, and then do what you know is best for your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars No math content, but solid advice
From the subtitle (A Guide for Educating Gifted and Advanced Learners in Math), you might get the impression (as I did) that this book will provide (at least some) math content that you can use in teaching talented math students. So, at first, I was disappointed to find out that this book does not offer any material for that purpose. Let me immediately add that it does contain many references to such material and other valuable resources.

Once you know that this is not a math textbook for talented students, and read it for what it is, you'll find out that it is a very good book on dealing with the full range of issues surrounding math education for talented students. The book is organized in a systematic way, where each chapter addresses a particular topic and starts off with the key points. The main target audience of the book consists of parents of talented kids, and teachers (whether teaching talented students or not).

Here are some of the interesting new things that I learned from the book.

It is important to differentiate between good, talented, and exceptionally talented students, since that difference will help decide whether and how to adjust their education. Grade-level tests are not suitable for this, because all these students will score near the top. But above-level standardized tests can be used to differentiate reliably. This is supported by research.

There are many myths (false beliefs) about talented students, and the book makes it possible to discuss these and provides good counterarguments. For instance, many people seem to believe that accelerated education is not good because it will disrupt the social/emotional development of the child. Not true. Of course, acceleration needs to be done in a planned manner. The book will tell you how. Another one is that you cannot detect math talent at an early age (you can, and it is a pity not to develop such talent from an early age on).

Talented students will stay ahead of average students, and with every year the gap will increase, because they pick up new concepts at a higher rate. So, their education will need to be adjusted all the time.

General gifted programs are not the best option. For one thing, the entry criteria may disqualify math talents with average performance on other subjects. For another thing, such programs usually do not provide specific math challenges. Enrichment is also not a solution when it is not accompanied by acceleration and when it does not incorporate specific math-related challenges (special math topics like knot theory, or problem solving).

I liked the many detailed references to research that support the claims of the authors (who themselves also do research in this area, involving large numbers of students). The book is also full of concrete examples and tables. Some quotes from the book can be found on my Quotes web page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Reference for Gifted Math Instruction
This book is the best reference for how to approach both the long term stategy of meeting the needs of gifted math students as well as the day-to-day mechanics of math instruction. The case studies are also enlightening - if your child is like one of those, do a web search for Davidson Young Scholars, a program started by the coauthors of Genius Denied: How to Stop Wasting Our Brightest Young Minds

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Recieved item on time, right when we were told it would arrive.Book in very good condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject!
As a homeschool parent responsible for the education of my child, I skimmed the first six chapters--interesting with unstated implications for other subjects. The next two chapters are invaluable. You and your child's math teacher should know the contents well, even if your child is just performing at grade level.I like to hike the mountains with a guide who has been to the summit, even if I think at first that I am not going to the top.The hike will be more exciting even lower down on the mountain.I will probably explore more exotic areas and even yearn to ascend the heights, when I never would have considered it without that guide. This book expands horizons, for the authors have mounted the math summit many times and teach teachers to lead their students there. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Textbook order
I ordered a textbook for the first time through Amazon.com and unfortunately I had a bad experience. It said that my order would take approximately two weeks, however, it never came.I do appreciate the refund.I am really upset about the inconvenience that I am going through regarding this transaction.I have never had problems purchasing textbooks through any other website, so this is possibly the last time I purchase items through Amazon.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful support for class plus future reference materials
I used this text in junior year for a one-semester advanced math class. However, this is the biggest textbook I have owned- little of it is applicable to any one class. However, it is fairly clear and readable as mathematics texts go and I have found it to be an excellent reference for independent use afterwards. It explains many useful techniques for confronting ODEs, PDEs, fourier analyses, and introductory complex analysis. It is clear enough to start practice problems without a professor having to tell you how any problems can be solved. It does not have the most detail, but it shouldn't be- It is a huge comprehensive book, and for further details you probably need a very specialized source anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
The book was everything I ever hoped for in a book.It fulfilled all of my textbook needs for differential equations. It even has numbers inside!!! The book arrived in near pristine condition and will remain so because of its importance in my academic endeavors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Math textbook never received
I bought this book via amazon from seller Brenton Smith.
I never received the book.About a month after I ordered
the book, I got a box which had been opened (and resealed)
before it got to me and no longer contained the book.
I verified that seller did drop it of at USPS in California
for shipment to South Carolina. There was a USPS label on
the box saying they had opened it and resealed it.No
one seems to know what happened to the book.

I suppose the problem is the USPS and not the seller; hard
to say for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Prindle, Weber & Schmidt Series in Mathematics)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much better than the answers in the book
I suppose I should not have been suprised, but this solutions manual: (a) only solved odd problems (b) did not solve every odd problem, but merely solved the first (and usually easiest) problem in a particular group, then stated that the remainder of the problems in the group could be solved similarly, and (c) often did not even solve the first problem in a particular group, merely stated that the problem could be solved "as in Example x in the text.Generally it is already apparent which example should be mimiced, so this "solution" does no good. Also, the answers to odd problems are already in the back of the text.
All in all, I got very little help from this solutions manual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Arn't solution manuals supposed to have solutions?
This is the most worthless purchase I may have ever made.A few problems explain how the the answer came to be, but not solved out. Mainly its just the odd answers that are already in the back of the book....horrible ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for self-study
I almost finished his two volumes in 4 months. I really like his methods. While reading his book, I always do examples first and then check. Great! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars sequel to the authors' Engineering Mathematics
This is the sequel to the authors' Engineering Mathematics. It follows the same programmed instruction approach which is so effective in their earlier book. Students who like this approach and the earlier book should also own this book. It delves into more engineering mathematics topics like Laplace Transforms, 2nd-Order Differential Equations and Complex Numbers. All in all, a good book to study engineering mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Math Books
The text is designed to meet the specific needs of engineering students who needs adanced math to complete their degree. The text is written for self-study and is completely self-contained.I think that the Advanced Engineering Mathematics text definitely has all of the math you could expect to use in electrical engineering. The nicest part of the text is the fact that the authors use bite-sized chunks of information. You will not get fancy derivations or cute stories at the beginning of the chapter. If you want all types of physical insight or mathematical modeling, this is not your book. If you are like most engineers and need to make it past this material, then the "cookbook" like feel of the text is exactly what you need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Self-Study of Applied Engineering Mathematics
I'll begin with the one problem I've found in this book (the only reason it doesn't get five stars): in the working of some of the example problems, the author leaves out numerous steps, does some odd algebraic manipulation, and some of the example answers are flat-out wrong (there are a couple in the section on Fourier Transforms). Now to all the great aspects...this book covers an extremely wide array of topics, assuming only an elementary knowledge of calculus and differential equations, addressing (in detail) many techniques frequently utilized by engineers with almost no rigor (great if you're an engineering student wanting to learn applied mathematics, not so good for pure mathematics students). The topics include numerical methods for solving algebraic equations, the Laplace Transform, the Z-Transform, Fourier Series and the Fourier Transform, power series solutions of ODE's, numerical methods for ODE's and PDE's, partial differentiation, analytic solution of PDE's, integral functions, matrix algebra, multiple integration, vector calculus, complex analysis, and linear optimization. The author's pedagogical approach is perfectly-suited to self-instruction, and I have been able to work through the book and most of its problems (for which all answers are provided) relatively quickly. My only problem with the content of the book (other than the aforementioned occassional errors) is in the coverage of multiple integration, where a large amount of work is devoted to line and surface integrals of scalar fields (including determining whether the line integral of a differential in x, y, and z is conservative without any discussion of curl). I just personally think this is the wrong approach for line and surface integrals, which are easiest to understand (IMHO) in the context of vector fields and vector calculus. Overall, I feel this is an excellent book for engineering students, and could even serve as a good starting point for mathematics students as an intro to the methods of harmonic analysis, PDE's, and complex analysis, before jumping into the theory of these fields. I whole-heartedly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for reviewing math relevant to graduate engineering studies
This book is the sequel to Stroud's excellent "Engineering Mathematics", which focused on the undergraduate engineer and the math that he/she should know by graduation. This book continues on with crystal-clear discussions of numerical methods, linear algebra including the singular value decomposition and its uses, linear programming methods, multiple integration, and partial differential equations, to name a few of the topics covered. Just because the mathematics is more advanced in this book does not mean that it is any less clear than its less advanced predecessor. Stroud continues his tradition of holding your hand and leading you through every question you might have about working various types of math problems. I particularly liked his coverage of partial differential equations and numerical linear algebra topics. That is because it is hard to find advanced math books on these topics that are not written by pure mathematicians. Thus most of those books have a tendency to go overboard on proofs and not focus on the practical matters engineers must know in order to solve problems. The only negative thing I can say about the book is that it references Stroud's other book on engineering math, "Engineering Mathematics", during some of the explanations, possibly putting you at a disadvantage if you don't have it handy. I highly recommend this book as a reference every engineer should own.
NOTE: For some strange reason this review of "Advanced Engineering Mathematics" is appearing under that book and also "Vector Analysis" by the same authors. This is NOT a review of "Vector Analysis", just to clear up any confusion! ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents the mathematical models applicable to manufacturing systems management, covering problems from production to real time control. It explores manufacturing systems from the viewpoints of both physical structure and performance measures. Two broad classes of mathematical models are covered in detail:oGenerative models, which yield a set of decision variables optimizing a performance measure, based on mathematical optimizationoEvaluative models, which evaluate some performance measures as a function of some predefined decision strategy. Within this class Petri Nets and Queueing Networks are discussed.Advanced Models for Manufacturing Systems Management describes dynamic systems modeling by state equations, a unifying framework for a wide variety of models. The text/reference stresses model building, but it examines model solving as well. Computational techniques are illustrated, such as linear programming, branch and bound methods, and dynamic programming. Particular emphasis is given to the development of heuristic methods from mathematical models. The book provides readers with valuable tools for management and design. The use of descriptive models within an optimization algorithm is considered. Numerous examples illustrate theoretical concepts throughout text. Appendices are given at the end of the book in order to recall fundamentals, such as linear programming and graph theory. Appendices also appear within each chapter. In this way, readers can follow the main reading path without getting involved with details; these appendices can be read at a later time. This textual structure makes this book particularly well suited for self-study. Advanced Models for Manufacturing Systems Management is beneficial reading for both students and practitioners. ...
