Product Description
This book provides a unified exposition of local-stereological methods developed within the last 15 years. The object of local stereology is to draw inference about quantitative parameters of spatial structures which can be regarded as neighbourhoods of points, called reference points. The model example is a biological cell which can be regarded as a neighbourhood of its nucleus. In local stereology, information from sections through the reference point is used. Only very weak assumptions are needed for the structure under study. For instance, specific cell shape assumptions are not necessary.

In order to reach a broader audience, the book has been written not only for specialists in stereology, integral geometry and geometric measure theory. In particular, Chapter 1 is an elementary introduction to stereology and the book contains about 75 illustrations. The theory of local steroelogy involves, however, advanced mathematical tools, which constitute an important part of the book.

Local-stereological methods are now in world-wide use in the microscopical study of biological tissue, and this invaluable book also contains a description of how the local methods are used in practice. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a collection of a series of lectures givenby Prof. V Kac at Tata Institute, India in Dec '85 and Jan '86. Theselectures focus on the idea of a highest weight representation, whichgoes through four different incarnations.

The first is the canonical commutation relations of theinfinite-dimensional Heisenberg Algebra (= ocillator algebra). Thesecond is the highest weight representations of the Lie algebra gl¥of infinite matrices, along with their applications to the theory ofsoliton equations, discovered by Sato and Date, Jimbo, Kashiwara andMiwa. The third is the unitary highest weight representations of thecurrent (= affine Kac-Moody) algebras. These algebras appear in thelectures twice, in the reduction theory of soliton equations (KP ®KdV) and in the Sugawara construction as the main tool in the study ofthe fourth incarnation of the main idea, the theory of the highestweight representations of the Virasoro algebra.

This book should be very useful for both mathematicians andphysicists. To mathematicians, it illustrates the interaction of thekey ideas of the representation theory of infinite-dimensional Liealgebras; and to physicists, this theory is turning into an importantcomponent of such domains of theoretical physics as soliton theory, theory of two-dimensional statistical models, and string theory. ... Product Description
This book provides an introductory, yet comprehensive, treatment of both Wiener and Kalman filtering, along with a development of least-squares estimation, maximum likelihood estimation, and maximum a posteriori estimation based on discrete-time measurements. A good deal of emphasis is placed in the text on showing how these different approaches to estimation fit together to form a systematic development of optimal estimation. Included in the text is a chapter on nonlinear filtering, focusing on the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and a new measurement update that uses the Levenburg-Marquardt algorithm to obtain more accurate results in comparison to the EKF measurement update. Applications of nonlinear filtering are also considered, including the identification of nonlinear systems modeled by neural networks, FM demodulation, target tracking based on polar-coordinate measurements, and multiple target tracking. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars How not to write a book
The introduction of chapters subjectwise is horrible. The layout of the text sucks. The intuitiveness of the examples to lead to a mathematical understanding is nonexistant.

Product Description
The UCSMP Third Edition curriculum emphasizes problem solving, everyday applications, and the use of technology and reading, while developing and maintaining basic skills. UCSMP Advanced Algebra emphasizes facility with algebraic expressions and forms, especially linear and quadratic forms, powers and roots, and functions based on t hese concepts. Students study logarithmic, trigonometric, polynomial, and other special functions both for their abstract properties and as tools for modeling real-world situations.A geometry course or its equal is a prerequisite, as geometric ideas are utilized throughout. Technology for graphing and CAS technology is assumed to be available to students. Advanced Algebra can be used following any standard geometry course. Students who have studied UCSMP Geometry before this course tend to be better prepared for the transformation and coordinate geometry they will need in this course. Students who have studied UCSMP Advanced Algebra are prepared for courses commonly found at the senior level, including trigonometry and precalculus courses.
