2-0 out of 5 stars Too theoretical; inadeqaute sample problems
This book, while ambitious in its scope, suffers from poor explanation pages which do not prepare the student to answer the difficult questions included in the exercise set. Often, the author omits important steps inthe example problems for the sake of brevity. This is not acceptable. Heshould separate "Advanced Engineering Mathematics" into twovolumes and give greater treatment to each topic. ... Read more

Explore How Theory and Applications Complement Each Other

Engineers require a solid knowledge of the relationship between engineering applications and underlying mathematical theory. However, most books do not present sufficient theory, or they do not fully explain its importance and relevance in understanding those applications.

Advanced Engineering Mathematics with Modeling Applications employs a balanced approach to address this informational void, providing a solid comprehension of mathematical theory that will enhance understanding of applications – and vice versa. With a focus on modeling, this book illustrates why mathematical methods work, when they apply, and what their limitations are. Designed specifically for use in graduate-level courses, this book:

  • Emphasizes mathematical modeling, dimensional analysis, scaling, and their application to macroscale and nanoscale problems
  • Explores eigenvalue problems for discrete and continuous systems and many applications
  • Develops and applies approximate methods, such as Rayleigh-Ritz and finite element methods
  • Presents applications that use contemporary research in areas such as nanotechnology

Apply the Same Theory to Vastly Different Physical Problems
Presenting mathematical theory at an understandable level, this text explores topics from real and functional analysis, such as vector spaces, inner products, norms, and linear operators, to formulate mathematical models of engineering problems for both discrete and continuous systems. The author presents theorems and proofs, but without the full detail found in mathematical books, so that development of the theory does not obscure its application to engineering problems. He applies principles and theorems of linear algebra to derive solutions, including proofs of theorems when they are instructive. Tying mathematical theory to applications, this book provides engineering students with a strong foundation in mathematical terminology and methods.

Product Description
A convenient single source for vital mathematical concepts, written by engineers and for engineers.

Builds a strong foundation in modern applied mathematics for engineering students, and offers them a concise and comprehensive treatment that summarizes and unifies their mathematical knowledge using a system focused on basic concepts rather than exhaustive theorems and proofs.

The authors provide several levels of explanation and exercises involving increasing degrees of mathematical difficulty to recall and develop basic topics such as calculus, determinants, Gaussian elimination, differential equations, and functions of a complex variable. They include an assortment of examples ranging from simple illustrations to highly involved problems as well as a number of applications that demonstrate the concepts and methods discussed throughout the book. This broad treatment also offers: * Key mathematical tools needed by engineers working in communications, semiconductor device simulation, and control theory * Concise coverage of fundamental concepts such as sets, mappings, and linearity * Thorough discussion of topics such as distance, inner product, and orthogonality * Essentials of operator equations, theory of approximations, transform methods, and partial differential equations It makes an excellent companion to less general engineering texts and a useful reference for practitioners. ... This well-known text is written to provide students in engineering and the applied sciences with a sound presentation of post-calculus mathematics. It contains ample material for a two-year sequence in applied mathematics or for a number of short courses such as ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and boundary-value problems, vector analysis, applied linear algebra, and complex variables. The courses are offered in either the mathematics department or in the engineering department, and sometimes in both. Advanced Engineering Mathematics is respected for its clarity, accuracy, and utility. It features a large number of carefully and completely worked examples, many involving engineering applications; numerous two-color illustrations that enhance the visual perception and quick identification of distinct entities in each figure; and over 5,000 exercises which range from routine practice problems to more difficult applications. Its broad coverage and detailed illustrative examples make this a valuable reference book for undergraduate students and graduate students alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Arfken's and many others
Wylie and Barrett's book, though not very popular, is very comprehensive and provides problems ranging from a few basic to very difficult ones. I personally favor this book than Arfken's though Arfken's is way more popular. I tried to do as many problems in the book as possible. There is student's complete solutions to the book, written in Chinese, which I found to be very helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars 1362 pages of junk
This book is a very hard mathematics book to learn from.I'm sure it would be a good reference because it covers a broad range of topics in its more than 1300 pages, but it doesn't cover them well, in my opinion.Examples are few and lack enough detail to follow and extend the content.I highly discourage any instructor to use this book for an engineering math class. There are much better options out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barrett was a good choice to update the book.
This book on advanced engineering mathematics had been for a long time a sort of cult book among engineering students at Montana State in Bozeman, and was used for MSU's year-long junior course in applied mathematics in the math dept. Apparently, Wylie was getting on in years and wanted a co-author. Having studied applied math with Prof. Barrett at Bozeman, I can definitely say he was the right person to co-author this book, as he has a real reverence for applied math and an insistence upon exact, clear thinking. This is not to say the book is representative of the mathematical style of Western state universities as Wylie got his Ph.D. from Cornell, I believe. Actually, the style reminds me of the books by Churchill, i.e., everything clearly presented with a traditional use of proofs and problems that inspire rather than pander to the student. An extremely useful and enjoyable book for serious students of applied math and advanced engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!
This book cover all those mathematical topics that are usefull for engineering. The special mention are the chaptres about variational calculus and tensors, themes sometimes not covered byapplymathematics books or, if covered, not with that special care that this booktreat these (fast, concise, although the reader must to have the enoughbackground). The exercises are very clear respect of the theory andshows the applications in direct relations whith the different branches ofthe apply science (Mechanics, Electricity, Fluid Mechanics, VibratingMechanics Etc.). I recommend this Book for all those people tha want tolearn the Basic mathematics for Enginnering without too much methodologicrodeos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Textbook
If you are to have one book on the subjects covered herein, this is the one book to buy. It could easily be the only book an engineerwould need these days if it covered tensor calculus, difference equations, probability theory and an introduction to the math theory behind discrete time samplingsystems (Z transforms, DFT, FFT, etc). ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Weak Binding!
While the intellectual content of this book seems to be up to par, the book itself is very poorly made.Within a few occurrences of rather light use, the binding has already started to come apart!

3-0 out of 5 stars Complex
Like others I have found this book rather complex. It's examples are often long and tedious and leave a lot of steps and derivations to the reader. Understanding it requires a very strong maths background. I'm using it for a fourth year university subject. After completing a pre-requisite stress analysis subject, I find the jump between Mechanics of Materials (Hibbeler) to this book a rather large one.

3-0 out of 5 stars An advanced text
Make sure that you keep your deformable solids book because this book does not contain any of the basics for reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Composite Beams in Bending
Well, I have lots of book and this is one of the books I have in my bookshelf.Obviously I have not read the entire book but I did of course read pages from 302 to 309.I was particularly interested in Composite Beams in Bending and those 7 pages did help me.I am not sure if there were any errors in the mathematical calculations as noted by some earlier reviewer but these 7 pages looked okay to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colourful and helpful
This Advanced Level Physics book is one of the best I have seen. The book is divided into 7 themes (Mechanics, Materials, Fields, Waves, Electricity, Inside the Atom and Physics in Medicine). The physical concepts as well as the formulas involved are explained in plain text as well as on clearly labelled diagrams.
I did the IB using this book and I found it highly relevant to the course, as it explained the syllabus and the options in great detail, and very comprehensively.
Moreover, there is a variety of practice questions from previous examinations at the back of each chapter, which vary in difficulty.
All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to obtain a top grade in a Physics course equivalent to A-level Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent stydy guide for A level students
This text book is ideal for all Physics A level students. It will help weaker students develop a sound understanding of principles as well as stretch the more accademic students. 4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough guide to advanced math topics
The first thought I got upon receiving this book was wow, this thing is absolutely MASSIVE. Like hope-you-don't-need-to-carry-it-on-campus massive. The reason being it's full of advanced topics; I doubt I'll come across anything in my career that won't be covered somewhere in this book.

While the book lacks explanation in some areas (or tries to be too concise about certain topics), it makes up by the large number of example problems it has for each section. Some math books are skimpy on the examples leaving the reader scratching their head of how to apply the topic presented to them, but this book is just the opposite.

The reason I docked it a star is because the book does have its share of errors. I used this book in a graduate math class for engineers/scientists and would literally spend hours upon hours trying to get my homework solutions to match the book's solutions, only to later discover I had it right and the book was wrong. Our professor said this was a good thing and that we had to have more faith in ourselves, but honestly, when taking a class and learning the material for the first time, your first instinct upon getting an answer that doesn't match the book's was that you made a mistake somewhere. So ultimately, the book's errors wasted untold hours of my time. Instead of making me have more faith in my mathematical abilities, it just frustrated me.

Another problem is that the index in this book is absolutely terrible. For such a huge book you think it would have a comprehensive index. Instead, it has maybe 8 or 9 entries per letter. In that respect it makes it difficult to use the book as a reference book.

Other than that, I wish other science books would take a cue from this one in that more examples than necessary is always better than too-few. I never had too many issues solving a problem from this book because there was almost always a similar example.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
Being an Engineering Student, I require a practical approach to Mathematics, even to Pure Maths. Following extensive research for the "Perfect Book", I saw this one and it immediately caught my attention due to the effectiveness of its explanations as well as the broad cover of syllabus, from matrices, algebra and vectors, to Statistics and Probability and Fortran.

Highly recommended for every Engineering Student. I truly believe there will be no need for any other book, at least during the Undergrad. ... Read more
