2-0 out of 5 stars Too old!
I think Corey has great routines, but this book is pretty
outdated. Give us some new material Corey.
I wouldn't recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unless you want some 90's pin-up pictures of Cory, don't waste your time with this book.
More than anything, this book suffers from disorganization woes, with no clear structure or smooth content flow. So, yes, I would also agree that the book was written in a "less than professional" style since the sentence structure is similar to that of an 8 year old. As a professional fitness trainer with an advanced degree in Exercise Physiology, I also noticed a severe lack of any scientific basis for many of the exercises in the book. Her recommendations for why to do or not do any particular exercises appeared random, at best. Readers should be aware that, since it was published in the early 90's, some of the exercises in the book are now considered downright risky and quite unsafe, such as presses or pulls behind the neck. Furthermore, she even advocated raising the heels during squats by as much as 3" which is quite inappropriate since force generation for that exercise are through the heels, and so the closer they are to the ground, the better. Additionally, quite often, the text did not appropriately match the pictures on the page such as in the descriptions of hand or feet positions which were rarely actually "shoulder width apart". Worse, some of the modeling pictures carried commentary that would enrage most feminists and appeared to be quite exploitative. Overall, this book was terrible and I am looking forward to relegating it to the recycling bin. Don't buy it, there are much better weight training books out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Workout Book
What I like best about this book is that Cory and her husband have puttogether a really comprehensive set of photographs illustrating how to dovarious exercises.I take this book to the gym with me for referenceduring my work out.The book has single handedly taught me some principlesof free weights.

The text of the book is written in a casual style thatis less than professional. The raw style allows the reader to quickly builda relationship with the author better than one gets with the averagetrainer.I find that the people at the gym who paid to do this are lessthan helpful and do not have complete enough information. The dietinformation seems useful, although I'm more of an Atkins diet fan.Thesample workouts are also a treasure -- there are many to choose from, allwell thought out.

As for the 70's fashion -- it is cause for amusement.Hey isn't this stuff in fashion these days anyway? Cory is an attractivecross between Bo Derek and the incredible hulk, and sets a model for all ofus to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for weight training exercisers
I found this book to be a useful reference in my weight training program. Cory gives good examples of many exercises, from beginner to advanced.Ifind her exercises more similar to mens than any other women's fitness bookI've read.Because of this, it is most useful for the advanced weightlifter. One draw-back is that the publication date is old (1991).I wouldlove to see Cory update this book in the near future.Overall, a greatbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent workout and dietary advice from 5-time Ms. Olympia
Cory does an excellent job of describing exercises through text and pictures. Helps people of different fitness levels put together exercise programs for getting into shape. She also tailors special workout routines for those interested in preparing their bodies for any of 47 different sports. Excellent advice on aerobic exercise and nutrition. As a guy, I'm convinced the gorgeous pictures of Cory are worth the price of the book!Buy the book for that reason--and develop a great workout program for free! ... Read more

Product Description
Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, an inspiring example of "age reversal," now shares his own program for revitalizing the body, mind, and spirit with the more than 78 million baby boomers searching for the fountain of youth. "Age reversal" is defined as the ability to restore energy, vitality, and health while actually reversing some of the bothersome side effects of growing older. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good suggestions on reducing the ravishes of advancing age
This books presents basic information anyone can incorporate to try to evade the ravishes of advancing age. Cooper gives recommendations in regards to exercise, stress management, diet, supplements, and related matters that will help people to retain their youthful energy.

He also explains that most people have unrealistic expectations on how much their physical abilities will decline with advancing age. Most people tend to think the decline is much more rapid and pronounced than it really is. This is particularly encouraging to me since I just turned 40!

His recommendations in regards to exercise include doing aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises. It is important for one to do all three kinds of exercises. Doing so will reduce the loss that most people experience in each of these areas.

He correctly notes that emotional stress can be as much a drain on one's vitality as poor exercise and diet habits. And as a Christian, I appreciate that he emphasizes that spiritual activities like prayer, Bible study, and attending worship services are ideal ways to deal with stress.

In regards to diet, he presents "bedrock principles" like eating more fruits and vegetables and reducing one's intake of fat. And he correctly points out that trans fat, found in hydrogenated oils, are the worst kind of fat. He doesn't go into too much detail in regards to diet in this book. But what he does give I tend agree with as I present similar information in much greater detail in my book "Creationist Diet: Nutrition and God-given Foods According to the Bible."

But it is in regards to supplements that I disagree with Cooper. He wholeheartedly recommends high doses of the antioxidant vitamins beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E, along with the mineral selenium. He claims taking amounts several times the RDA helps to prevent heart disease and cancer. However, the evidence is not as clear-cut as Cooper makes it sound. I include a chapter in my book citing scientific studies in this regard. Some have shown a reduced risk from taking antioxidants, but other studies have shown no effect.

But that disagreement aside, this book does present helpful information for those of us who are starting to worry about our health and vitality as we age.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few gems, but mostly a rehash in need of an editor
This book basically covers ground other Cooper books have covered, but in a more confusing way.If you have read the other Cooper books, there is little need to pick up this one other than a few pages on retaining bonedensity. If you have not read the other books, this one is an o.k.introduction if you are willing to wade through a lot of crapola to get tothe good stuff.

This is mainly aimed at the generation above 40.Cooperreaffirms his belief in aerobics, but doesn't mention the new research ininterval training that seems to displace his old steady pace concept.Healso covers stretching, strength training, diet and supplementation. Cooper is not really very strong on strength and his advice is probablybetter avoided in that area.

On supplementation, Cooper's prescriptionsseem to be safe if one is to overlook that a previous recommedation, takingextra beta carotene, has proven to be a problem for many people.

Thebook mostly comes off as a bunch of notes that were gathered together in ahurry. The case stories are pretty uninspiring. His introductory storyabout falling off a mountain bike seems to have no relevance to anything. And references to himself as "Super Doc" are, to say the least, irritating.

By inventing the concept of aerobics, Cooper has done theworld a service.Yes, the promise of aerobics has not been fulfilled inpractice, but Cooper's recommendations are better than nothing, which ispretty much what they replaced. However, the Doc needs to move along andkeep up with the exercise research coming out of other countries, as TheUnited States is behind the learning curve in this area. His intentionsare good, but he either has to teach this dog to hunt or turn the questover to a hungrier author.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best, well documented book on fitness and nutrution
This book has helped me to understand the importance of good nutrition and fitness as no other book or speaker ever has.It was well researched, and many different aspects of fitness and nutrition are covered to provideexcellent health for different age groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energizing and insightful...a great read for every age
I thought this book was fantastic. I couldn't put it down. The research was well documented. There are side bar research highlights that relate to everyone and it really hit home. If you truly believe that you can solve90% of your medical and social issues without medicine, this book will giveyou great insight into how. As a kickboxing instructor, I have recommendedthis to all my classes. Good for all ages, even me at 29!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Well researched but poorly presented.Disjointed.Awful flow. No new insights. The takeaways or "aha's" were hard to find. Living in Dallas, Dr. Coopers reputation is unsurpassed. His research center isdeserving of this reputation. However, his most recent books and healthclub facility fall far short of his medical expertise. ... Product Description
I have always considered myself an athlete or, at the very least, athletic. While growing up in inner-city Philadelphia in the late 1950s and early 1960s, I enjoyed the usual rotation of baseball, basketball, and football—not much variety, but no shortage of activity. When I was 11, I received my first barbell and set of weights from Sears. Add a chin-up bar, and I was hooked. Sports and exercise became every bit a part of my life as school and friends. Martial arts came next, but I wasn’t introduced to activities such as tennis and skiing until medical school. I became pretty good at tennis and fairly accomplished in martial arts; however, over time I dropped out of these activities I had loved because of a bum knee (an old reminder of football days) and, more importantly, a demanding and hectic work schedule. Instead, I devoted the small amount of leisure time I had to dedicate to staying fit by going to the gym, with basic 1- and 2-dimensional cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility routines. I was consistent and rarely missed a workout. I pumped iron and spent time on stairs that moved and bikes that didn’t. I was a typical gym rat. Thus, I stayed pretty fit, at least in the traditional definition of the term. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I loved this book for many reasons. I found it to be an effective book for weight loss.

The program WORKS!

The author makes a good case for balancing nutrition and excercise as well as spirit. She touches briefly on meditation and this was something that helped me a lot when I was going through my divorce. I tried Jenny Craig and lost some weight with it but put it back on, and thats the problem with most diets.

By approaching the weight loss on a spiritual level, I was able to lose 10 lbs in one month!

Mostly it's a small, compact book that gets right to the point and outlines an efficient weight loss program aimed at not only losing the weight, but keeping it off.

Fast food has always been my weakness, and the author briefly addresses the addictive nature of processed foods.

The fast food restaurant nutrition charts were especially helpful to me, I keep a copy of this book in my glove compartment and one at home. I know I can still eat some of my favorite fast food items but I only do this once a week and I stay away from the french fries!

The book also emphasizes the need to cut sugar and white flour as much as possible and also gets into the glycemic index.

All in all a great little book that cuts to the chase, makes for an enjoyable read, and also serves as a reference because it contains all the fast food restuarant nutrition charts.

This book WORKS!

Product Description
Abstract: The hypothesis that the H-Wave® device (Electronic Waveform Lab, Inc., Huntington Beach, CA), a small-diameter fiber stimulator, is a paradigm shift of electrotherapeutic treatment of pain associated with human neuropathies and sports injuries is based on a number of its properties. The primary effect of H-Wave® device stimulation (HWDS) is the stimulation of "red-slow-twitch" skeletal muscle fibers. The authors propose, based on the unique waveform, that the H-Wave® device specifically and directly stimulates the small smooth muscle fibers within the lymphatic vessels ultimately leading to fluid shifts and reduced edema. In unpublished rat studies, it has been observed that HWDS induces protein clearance. The H-Wave® device was designed to stimulate an ultra low frequency (1-2 Hz), low tension, nontetanizing, and nonfatiguing contraction, which closely mimics voluntary or natural muscle contractions. The H-Wave® device can stimulate small fibers due in part to its exponentially decaying waveform and constant current generator activity. The main advantage of these technologies over currently applied electrical stimulators (eg, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator [TENS], interferential [IF], neuromuscular electrical stimulation [NMES], high-volt galvanic, etc.) is that H-Wave\'s® small fiber contraction does not trigger an activation of the motor nerves of the large white muscle fibers or the sensory delta and C pain nerve fibers, thus eliminating the negative and painful effects of tetanizing fatigue, which reduces transcapillary fluid shifts. Another function of the H-Wave® device is an anesthetic effect on pain conditions, unlike a TENS unit which in the short term activates a hypersensory overload effect (gate theory) to stop pain signals from reaching the thalamic region of the brain. When the H-Wave® device is used at high frequency (60 Hz), it acts intrinsically on the nerve to deactivate the sodium pump within the nerve fiber, leading to a long-lasting anesthetic/analgesic effect due to an accumulative postsynaptic depression. Moreover, HWDS produces a nitric oxide (NO)-dependent enhancement of microcirculation and angiogenesis in rats. Thus, the authors hypothesize that because of these innate properties of the H-Wave® device, it may provide a paradigm shift for the treatment of both short- and long-term inflammatory conditions associated with pain due to sports injuries. A recent meta-analysis found a moderate-to-strong effect of the H-Wave® device in providing pain relief, reducing the requirement for pain medication, and increasing functionality. The most robust effect was observed for improved functionality, suggesting that the H-Wave® device may facilitate a quicker return to the field. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great book horrible kindle version
I have this book on my iPod and also bought a hardcover copy, but I wanted one for my Kindle. This kindle version is just a pdf copy of the book. So there is no bookmarking, notes, etc. Also, the image is horizontal so you have to turn your kindle to read the d**m thing and the 'font' is very small [which you can't change, because it is in pdf format.]

I wanted to return this 'book', but Amazon does not make it easy. I am still trying. Also, I think it would be fair if Amazon.com labeled Kindle books better, making it clear which 'books' are pdfs, texts, etc.

I love my Kindle, but I think Amazon can do better.

Excerpt:

Achieving health and fitness through healthy diet

Because of so many illnesses and chronic diseases that occur among people through the years, more and more individuals are playing attention to their health and fitness because these would help them combat certain medical conditions. Today, one of the major reasons why people are overweight or suffer from minor and major health risks is that they don’t practice having a healthy diet.
