Product Description

The African Diaspora and the Study of Religion engages a variety of conversations at the forefront of contemporary scholarship in the study of religion and in African diaspora studies. These conversations include: the construction of racial identity in diverse national settings (Brazil, Mexico, Britain, North America); new religious movements and nationalism; alternative religious narratives in the diaspora; literature read through the lens of diaspora; trans-Atlantic culture (the role of Denmark in Nella Larson's novel Quicksand, for example, or Ethiopia in Rastafarianism); and the role of the scholar and scholarship in the construction of religious and political meaning.

Product Description
The latest work from Harold Scheub, one of the world's leading scholars of African folktales, is the broadest collection yet assembled with tales from the entire continent of Africa, north to south. It brings together mythic, fantastic, and coming-of-age tales, some transcribed more than a hundred years ago, others dating to modern-day Africa. Scheub includes the work of storytellers from major African language groups, as well as many storytellers whose work is not often heard outside of Africa. This anthology offers a classroom-ready collection that should appeal to any scholar of African literature and culture. Realizing that these tales are part of a dying art, Scheub writes for the inner ear in everyone, bringing an oral tradition to life in written form. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Compilation Of African Folk Tradition.
Although Not in Great detail this book is able to scratch the surface of many African myths as well as provide a basis for the folk tradition of African tribes all through Africa. The book does an exceptional job however at presenting the reasoning for African myths as well as conecting the myths between cultures. Recomended for any fan of Myth who wants a brief outline of African myth for their collection or simply just a quick read or refference.

I would recomend checking out the rest of the "Myth and Mankind" series as they disect the beliefs of 19 different cultures from The Greeks to the Mayan. ... Read more

Product Description

From support for racial discrimination to justification for struggle against the status quo, the biblical text and its key figures have played a prominent role in the development of religious discourse on pressing socio-political issues.  Slavery and continued discrimination were given theological sanction through the Old Testament story of Ham, but what of his descendent Nimrod the hunter? African American Religious Life and the Story of Nimrod interrogates the nature and meaning of the biblical figure Nimrod's legacy for the children of Africa, shedding light on an intriguing question:  For people of African descent is Nimrod famous, or infamous?

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat interesting collection of texts
Hexham here compiles numerous writings about Zulu religious thought in the 19th century, from the viewpoints of missionaries, merchants and others. He includes brief descriptions of each author and edits some of the textsto limit their theme to religion a bit better, but the range of topicscovered is still broad. Some of the observers are much better writers thanothers, and some provide much better analysis (Colenso does a great jobhere) - overall, the quality is fair and ranges from interesting to dull. Partially recommended, though this probably won't appeal to those reallyinterested in the topic. ... Read more

Excerpt: (pronounciation Ah-nahn-see) Anansi the trickster is one of the most important characters of West African and Caribbean folklore. He is also known as Ananse, Kwaku Ananse, and Anancy; and in the Southern United States he has evolved into Aunt Nancy. He is a spider, but often acts and appears as a man. The story of Anansi is akin to the Coyote or Raven trickster found in many Native American cultures. The Anansi tales are believed to have originated in the Ashanti tribe in Ghana. (The word Anansi is Akan and means, simply, spider.) They later spread to other Akan groups and then to the West Indies, Suriname, and the Netherlands Antilles. On Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire he is known as Nanzi, and his wife as Shi Maria. Anansi tales are some of the best-known in West Africa The stories made up an exclusively oral tradition, and indeed Anansi himself was synonymous with skill and wisdom in speech. It was as remembered and told tales that they crossed to the Caribbean and other parts of the New World with captives via the Atlantic slave trade. One of his stories is called "Anansi and The Turtle", the moral to this story is if you try to outsmart somebody that person might outsmart you. Stories of Anansi became such a prominent and familiar part of Ashanti oral culture that the word Anansesem - "spider tales" -came to embrace all kinds of fables. Peggy Appiah, who collected Anansi tales in Ghana and published many books of his stories wrote: "So well known is he that he has given his name to the whole rich tradition of tales on which so many Ghanaian children are brought up - anansesem - or spider tales." Elsewhere they have other names, for instance Anansi-Tori in Suriname and Kuent'i Nanzi in Curaçao....More: http://booksllc.net/?id=99498 ... Read more
