Product Description

A crucial contribution to the literature on HIV/AIDS and society, this resource looks at the stigma and discrimination that can affect already physically and psychologically ailing children, their families, and their communities. Providing an overview of the available writings and resources, this study looks specifically at what can be done with regard to the stigma, hoping to develop more effective ways to assist them in dealing with discrimination and ultimately leading to better social attitudes toward children and the disease itself.

Product Description
This module is designed to improve the awareness, knowledge and skills of health professionals on poverty and gender concerns in the field of HIV/AIDS. Experience increasingly shows that the socioeconomic factors contributing to the rapid spread of HIV in the Region include low education, limited access to health care services and increased mobility within and between countries — factors that are largely determined by poverty and gender inequality. The growing commitment to curbing the HIV/AIDS epidemic requires that health professionals at community, provincial, national and international levels have the knowledge, skills and tools to more effectively respond to the health needs of poor and marginalized people and address the gender inequalities fuelling the epidemic. However, many health professionals in the Region are not adequately prepared to address these issues. This module is designed to help fill this gap.

This module, which is part of a Sourcebook for health professionals, is intended to be used in pre-service and in-service training of health professionals. It is divided into six sections: Section 1 provides a brief overview of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and an understanding of HIV/AIDS; Section 2 examines What the links are between poverty, gender and HIV/AIDS; Section 3 discusses why it is important for health professionals to address HIV/AIDS, from efficiency, equity and human rights perspectives; Section 4 discusses how health professionals can address poverty and gender concerns in HIV/AIDS; Section 5 provides notes for facilitators and finally Section 6 contains a collection of tools, resources and references to support health professionals in their work in this field. ... The HIV Wellness Sourcebook: An East-West Guide to LivingWell with HIV/AIDS and Related Conditions takes on an immensetask: blending Chinese and Western medical therapies to manage HIV andrestore balance to the mind, body, and spirit. Misha Ruth Cohen, aChinese medicine researcher and practitioner, gives a compact coursein Chinese medicine practices with its perspective on "thedisharmonies associated with HIV infection." She describesclearly how Chinese medicine views the body, disease, the immunesystem (the body's ability to fight disease), and the progression fromHIV to AIDS. She explains the basics of the Western view of the immunesystem, showing how Western and Eastern views both differ andcomplement each other.

The book details how to use diet, herbs, acupuncture, moxibustion (placing warm herbs on the protected skin atacupuncture points), acupressure, Qi Gong (exercises includingmeditation), and other healing techniques. Targeted treatment planscombine East and West for neurological disorders (such as neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and dementia), protozoal infections (such asPneumoncystis carinii pneumonia and toxoplasmosis),candidiasis, mycobacterial infections, opportunistic viral infections, and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars HIV sourcebook, an excellent source
This book is comprehensive and clear for both the Chinese Medical practitioner, and for the HIV patient.
Misha Cohen has done amazing work and research with HIV and Chinese Medicine, and we are fortunate to have this information neatly organized and at our fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for people living with HIV/AIDS!
This book provides such a great wealth of information concerning Easternviews of medicine and health. It is written in plain language, in orderfor the reader to understand the different aspects of Chinese medicine andhow it relates to the HIV/AIDS virus.

A person who is not sold onWestern views of treating HIV/AIDS will definitely like the alternativetherapies and ideas presented in this book.

Chinese philosophies ofhealing fit so much better into "balancing" the body.So manyWestern doctors feel that prescribing pills is the only effective way tocombat HIV and AIDS.Chinese medicine teaches a person to examine the"systems" of their body, and how to keep them in check.Bymodifying your lifestlye, and practicing "body balancing" you canempower yourself and your body for the battle against the HIVvirus.

People with HIV and AIDS should start listening to their bodies, and not to Western medicine dogma! ... Read more

In 1985, therapist Niro Asistent tested HIV positive. Facing what many saw as a death sentence, Niro created her own programme of emotional therapy, daily meditation, and healthy diet and exercise. Since 1986, she has tested HIV negative. In this personal account of struggle, Asistent shows how she turned fear, shame, denial and anger into strength, self-acceptance and courage that then gave her the power to heal herself. She desribes the specific techniques she used from journal keeping, meditation, and emotional self-therapy to the vital benefits of sound nutrition and daily exercise, to the importance of setting new priorities. Niro Markoff Asistent is the founding Director of SHARE (The Foundation for the Self Healing AIDS Related Experiment). ... Read more

Every so often you come across a book that stands way out from the crowd this is one of them. Niro's journey speaks to all of us and her courage is remarkable and her book is inspiring and inspirational to read. It certainly challenges us to look at your limited belief's about what is possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once again
Once again someone who believes that the human condition is divine and that we can change our lives ourselves shows that life doesn't have the limitation put on to it by people who are scared of thinking for themselves...or is it that these people want to control life in order to profit from it, or is it that these people want to make themselves out to be victims to avoid taking responsability for the fact that they can change their lives themselves? Don't be a victim, decide that you can change your life yourself and the tools you need will come your way. What you get by making yourself out to be a victim just remains a vicious cycle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating a life that heals
As a healthcare professional and as someone who has lost freinds and family to AIDS, I was greatly encouraged by this book. At one time, it was required reading by an English professor at Georgia State University. Iknow a person with AIDS now, whom after reading it, found importantinformation and encouragement to continue living successfully and fullywith HIV illness for over 14+ years! A must reading for anyone who wants toretain control of their own life while facing any health challenge. Peopledo not die of AIDS. They die of the fear of inevitable death, pervasivemisinformation, and a surrender to the medical and pharmaceuticalestablishment. This book is a powerful witness to a woman's battle to robdeath, personal healing, and triumph over what is seen as a endless orhopeless battle. It is good reading whether you have a life threateningillness or not because it is a true story about hope and personalempowerment! ... Read more

Product Description
The first wave of the AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency DiseaseSyndrome) epidemic predominantly affected young gay men, but thenext wave is predicted to strike down young heterosexual men andwomen in their prime. There have been literally thousands ofscientific studies on the subject of AIDS. Many important factsrelated to the spread of AIDS among heterosexuals have been found. The only way to stop the AIDS epidemic is for every sexually-activeindividual to be thoroughly familiar with all these facts. Severalareas of vital importance are covered in this book.

HETEROSEXUAL TRANSMISSION. The public's impression of whatconstitutes causal contact versus intimate contact may be verydifferent from a medical expert's point of view. Yet, this is onesubject which is often misunderstood by many people. A clearunderstanding by everyone on how HIV is transmitted from one personto another will have an important impact on the spread of AIDSwithin the general population.

RISKS. Knowing what the risks of infection are, and an earnestattempt to assess such risks will greatly decrease one's chances ofbecoming infected. A person should know if he or she is in adangerous situation before engaging in sexual activities.

PROTECTION. Using a condom is not the ultimate answer in preventinginfection. However, it is the only effective protection we have atthis time. On the other hand, studies have shown that many peopleuse condoms in an improper and ineffective manner, which negatesall the best advantages of this form of protection.

Here is one book that will address all these topics in a verydetailed manner so that every sexually-active heterosexualindividual will be able to quickly and efficiently assess everysituation in which he or she might come into contact with aninfected person and thus be in a better position to avoidinfection. ...
