Product Description
HIV/AIDS has become a psychiatric epidemic. The disease causes orexacerbates such psychiatric disorders as depression, dementia, schizophrenia, and bipolardisease. At the same time, the presence of a psychiatric disorder can lead to increased risk forHIV infection and worsen the prognosis of patients once they are infected.

Dr. Glenn J. Treisman, who has been described as the "father of AIDS psychiatry," describes therelationship between psychiatric disorders and HIV/AIDS and demonstrates the ways in whicheffective recognition and treatment of mental disorders can increase a patient's ability to obtainbetter treatment, improve compliance with medical regimens, and reduce incidents of high-riskbehavior.

The book provides HIV/AIDS professionals with overviews of psychiatric disorders, includingmood and personality disorders, mental retardation, substance abuse and addiction, and sexualdisorders and dysfunction. It also provides mental health professionals with essential informationon how to care for patients with HIV and those at risk for the infection. The book discussespsychopharmacology, psychotherapy and counseling, as well as adherence and complianceissues, and the relationship between psychiatric disorders and other STDs. Containing the mostup-to-date information on diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, this book draws on the authors'unrivaled experience and uses case studies to show HIV/AIDS professionals how psychiatricinterventions benefit the patient, the medical team, and society as a whole. The cases are rich andengaging, and convey to the reader the intense disorder that can affect the lives of patients. ... Read more

Product Description
AIDS is devastating many areas of sub-Saharan Africa.

* Over twelve million people in the region have died of AIDS in the past decade.

* Over 29.4 million people in the region are infected with HIV.

* Of the eleven people who contract HIV each minute in the world, ten live in sub-Saharan Africa.

* With no known cure and no vaccine as yet available, an estimated 60% of Africans under the age of eighteen today will be dead of AIDS before they reach 45 years of age.

* Most prevention programs have largely failed because the research behind them has focused primarily on "risk groups," behavioral change models, and flawed understandings of cultural practices.

HIV and AIDS in Africa: Beyond Epidemiology seeks to shift the predominant understandings generated by biomedical and epidemiological research, recognizing that HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa is a complex and regionally-specific phenomenon rooted in local economies, deepening poverty, migration, gender, war, global economies, and cultural politics. International contributors from across the social sciences further our understanding of AIDS by looking at the epidemic from angles often inadequately explored. Ultimately, the underlying message of every contributor to this book is that AIDS is not going to diminish in Africa until social, gender, and economic inequities are addressed in meaningful ways. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars excellent read
I read this book cover to cover. And I think it has a lot to offer. At least for me who is new to HIV.Being Positive for only 6 months.I was great and reassuring that I was doing what I could do to help w/ my recovery to be undetectable.Which is the aim for all people w/ HIV.So yes I will highly recommend this book to all.

1-0 out of 5 stars time to update
This book had one or 2 pages of useful information... The rest is out of date, vague and misleading. Get a good Doc to help you with this stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide For The HIV+ Beginner Looking to LIVE!!
Just recently purchased and read this book. Excellent reference guide not just for anabolic steroid use, but for nutrition, supplements, exercise and much more. This is a must have and must keep resource book! A valuable treasure I will constantly, be able to refer to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful tool in HIV health care
Nelson and Michael have put together an extraordinarily useful compilation of articles dealing with the causes and treatments of HIV wasting and the host of maladies that accompany it. The current acceptance of steroid, exercise and nutrition therapies to treat HIV can be directly attributed to the good work done by these activists.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly...it has profoundly effected my life for the better and is an important tool in my health care.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST "how to live with HIV"book on the market
Mooney and Vergel are committed. They have spent thousands of hours researching lecturing and in the case of Vergel living with their subject. The book provides in laymens terms but backed with numerous scientific citations, how to use exercise, supplements and steroid agents to make living with HIV bearable.

The advent of HAART has meant a change in the life expectency of HIV patients. As a result the toxic effects of the HIV drugs are seeing many complications and side effects. This book discusses many of these and provides hands on suggestions for dealing with them.

Even if you just exercise you will feel better and you may just slow some of the side effects. You may even reverse some.

I have followed this book very casually since I bought it in July last year up until April 2001.I noticed that my "blood" results (other than Viral Load) were getting better and despite 'failing' a drug combination, my overall health was great. For the last 3 months I have followed some of the books recommendations RELIGIOUSLY. Despite having to change drugs due to resistance, my health and fitness has increased amazingly. And as an added benefit friends say I look the best I have in 10 years. My waist has gone from 38" to 31".My chest, arms and legs have all increased in size. My CD4's both in real and % terms are the highest in 4 years and all my other blood works are excellent. I am 40 years young.2 weeks ago I completed a Vitality and Longevity Analysis and my Doctor advised that I had the Celular Health of a 26 year old.

I am so confident of the book and the authors that I bought myDoctor a copy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a grimly serious book
A grimly serious book. The chapters describe many models of how the AIDS/HIV pandemic might continue spreading. There are attempts to include numerous factors that contribute or act against the spread.

A major topic investigated in several chapters is the evolution of AIDS resistance to the protease inhibitors. The inhibitors havenow been given in treatments for almost 10 years and have proved remarkably effective in fighting HIV to a standstill, though crucially not in eliminating it. A key problem, that surely keeps many researchers awake at night, is what might cause HIV to successfully mutate. One chapter, by Heffernan and Wahl, studies treatment interruptions as a probable cause. The interruptions might happen because some recipients cannot keep affording the treatments. Or they might, inadvertantly or otherwise, neglect treatments. (Zonked out junkies, anyone?)

Other chapters delve into such issues as better estimates of spreading. A consistent problem is that it is always possible to introduce a more complex model, with more parameters to estimate. What is vital is trying to discern a model with the minimum complexity, that still is adequate to describe a continuing epidemic. From the book, it is unclear which if any of the presented models this might be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bringing the Tragedy of AIDS in Africa to the Forefront of our Attention
While much media coverage is given to statistics about HIV and AIDS in the USA, whether that be medical data now more available to the public, films that document both the Hospice development for the dying as well as the fragile hopes of new medicines and possible vaccines for those living with HIV, or simply coverage of the entertainment industry support during AIDS Walks, Runs, and other Benefit extravaganzas, almost nothing is said about the devastation that this disease has eroded the continent of Africa.

Here in a book that is more devoted to the visual images of patients, families and villages in the shadow of AIDS than to statistical information, the truth becomes more poignant. In a series of interview monologues with some of those affected by this plague the need for world wide attention is apparent. How we can spend billions on wars and exclude the humanitarian needs of those for whom each day is a life and death crisis boggles the mind.Perhaps this informative and tender book will help.Grady Harp, July 05

4-0 out of 5 stars A First Person Picture Book
This book is an illustrated compilation of brief (1-4 paragraph), first-person narratives by victims, family, and workers in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in southern Africa. There are more pages of photos than of text. Photos are well-done and powerful. The book does much to give the reader an insider's view of the AIDS tragedy and its impact at the personal and family level. It does not address the problem analytically at all; you'll need other books for that. This one is like sitting in the waiting room of the HIV clinic, or on the floor of the hut, and talking to the people about their stories.

Product Description

A New York Times Notable Book of 2007

The Invisible Cure is an account of Africa's AIDS epidemic from the inside--a revelatory dispatch from the intersection of village life, government intervention, and international aid. Helen Epstein left her job in the US in 1993 to move to Uganda, where she began work on a test vaccine for HIV. Once there, she met patients, doctors, politicians, and aid workers, and began exploring the problem of AIDS in Africa through the lenses of medicine, politics, economics, and sociology. Amid the catastrophic failure to reverse the epidemic, she discovered a village-based solution that could prove more effective than any network of government intervention and international aid, an intuitive response that calls into question many of the fundamental assumptions about the AIDS in Africa.

Written with conviction, knowledge, and insight, The Invisible Cure will change how we think about the worst health crisis of the past century--and indeed about every issue of global public health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting, Must-Read Book
One of those rare books that talk to all, regular readers, scientists, activists, humanitarian workers, doctors, nurses, families... The author presents a clear and firm position on the question of AIDS in a very engaging manner. It was a pleasure to read the book that shed light on why the fight against AIDS is far from being won.

1-0 out of 5 stars used book
I almost always buy the used books. I've never been disappointed until the last book I bought. It was so marked up with ink lines all over every page and the person had written notes all on the sides. It was really bad. I found it hard to read and it made it very distracting.

4-0 out of 5 stars hiv prevention: now and how
"As a woman living with HIV," says Beatrice Were of Uganda, "I am often asked whether there will ever be a cure for HIV/AIDS, and my answer is that there is already a cure. It lies in the strength of women, families and communities who support and empower each other to break the silence around AIDS and take control of their sexual lives." With a vaccine against HIV far off in the distant future (if at all), and with treatment of AIDS in the two-thirds world difficult, expensive, and limited in effect, the name of the game in HIV-AIDS is prevention. But in places like Africa, which is the focus of Helen Epstein's book, prevention is not as simple as it sounds. As she notes in her appendix, measles, syphilis, tuberculosis, and other entirely preventable diseases still kill millions of people even though they can be treated for pennies.

Why has HIV-AIDS ravaged eastern and southern Africa like no place on earth? "In 2005," she writes, "roughly 40 percent of all those infected with HIV lived in just eleven countries in this region-- home to less than 3 percent of the world's population." In some of these countries the infection rates have hit 30 percent, decimating the general population, while in the west, for example, rates hover at about 1% and are generally limited to specific demographics like gay men, intravenous drug users, and commercial sex workers." Theories abound about this discrepancy, but Epstein argues a narrow point, that Africa's problem is not profound promiscuity, or even the normal culprits of high risk groups like prostitutes or truck drivers, but instead a social phenomenon of "concurrent partners." That is, Africans do not have more sexual partners than in other places in the world, and nowhere near as many as gay men among whom infection rates are exponentially lower; but they do have a small number of sexual partners concurrently, at the same time, rather than one at a time or sequentially. This has set the virus loose among the general population like a runaway train.

And why has prevention been so elusive? Epstein appeals to what she calls the comprehensive "social ecology" of denial, silence, shame, adverse gender roles, and stigma about HIV-AIDS. Western-initiated and donor-funded programs will always be less successful than listening to Africans themselves and their own suggestions about how to address the problem. Uganda, of course, has been the amazing success story in this regard, and the subject of bitter debates about why. In 1989 Uganda had one of the highest infection rates in the world, but from about 1992-2002 the infection rate dropped by two-thirds. The key to the success, argues Epstein, was not in the billions of dollars from the west, but from the "collective efficacy" of a "shared calamity," by people helping each other and talking openly about the scourge. In particular, "partner reduction," she says, and not the much vaunted condom use, helped Ugandans to address the cultural phenomenon of concurrent partners. Partner reduction, as one worker described it, is thus the "neglected middle child of the ABC approach" of abstinence, fidelity ("be faithful"), and condoms. Zero Grazing, as Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni called for, is thus the silent cure already available, however valuable other prescriptions.

Epstein, a molecular biologist who has written widely on public health issues, combines rigorous science and the anecdotal evidence of substantial field research. She's clearly as comfortable with and interested in meeting with a dozen African widows under a mango tree as she is in the latest results of a demographic study. Her book has received strong reviews in the New York Times and the New York Review of Books (where her mother was a co-editor before she died), and also a rebuttal of sorts on the home page of UNAIDS that was provoked by her somewhat conspiratorial stance toward research that she argues they ignored because it didn't fit their partisan ideology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear Thinking About Slowing the AIDS Epidemic in Africa
We have been overwhelmed by bad information about what causes AIDS to be so much more prevalent in the eastern and southern parts of Africa than elsewhere in the world.Even though more money than ever is being directed to stopping this epidemic, that money is hardly ever being spent for a helpful purpose.Helen Epstein carefully describes what she learned on site in Africa about what the primary problems really are and how best to deal with those problems . . . rather than the problems that politicians and NGOs want to address.Millions of lives are at stake:Please read what Ms. Epstein has to say and share what you learn with others.

So what's different about people in eastern and southern Africa that makes AIDS so much larger a risk there?

1.Men are much less likely to be circumcised.Circumcion cuts infection risk dramatically.

2.Although the people in that part of the world have no more (and often fewer) sexual partners over a life time, these people are more likely to be active with more than one sexual partner at a time. That habit causes those who become infected to spread the disease much faster and further.

What can be done?

Uganda (once the area most affected by AIDS) provides the answer:Make sure everyone knows that AIDS risk is there for everyone who is a drug user and shares needles, or has sex with anyone who has more than one partner without using a condom. The public in general, and politicians as well, like to paint AIDS as being a problem limited to homosexuals, sex workers, and promiscuous people. But in places like eastern and southern Africa, those who monogamous can be almost equally at risk.In fact, Uganda doesn't use these good policies any more ("No Grazing") because fighting AIDS has gone from being a local activity to being a national policy.

Ms. Epstein reports in detail how local initiatives to get the correct information out can make a big difference (saving an estimated one million lives in Uganda).National and international initiatives seem to waste almost all of the money (as she points out in several examples).

By not paying attention to what works and what doesn't, country leaders and international NGO leaders run the risk of making everyone feel like everything is being done . . . when the wrong things are being done.As a result, millions will die.

It's a sad story of how everyone wants to help, but they see the problem as being like the nail in the eye of a carpenter. You hit the nail to solve the problem.Drug companies want to develop vaccines.Condom makers want to sell condoms.Churches want to preach sexual abstinence.Politicians want to ignore the frequency of rape, casual sex, and cheating among married people.Individuals want to believe they are safe because they know the people they have sex with. But most of these nails don't make much difference.

Let's start hitting the right nail!

1-0 out of 5 stars Self published advertisement by a con artist - and she wants to you buy it
Con artists have been part of the social fabric since time immemorial. A particularly contemptible breed of such snake-oil salesmen are those that specialize in preying on people battling with life threatening illnesses like cancer and AIDS.

Hulda Clark is one of the most prominent recent examples of the species, described by another reviewer quite accurately as a "sickening parasite". She has made a career out of peddling ridiculously implausible claims to extract dollars (and dental amalgam) from desperate and vulnerable people facing serious health challenges. Following criminal charges in the US she fled over to the border to Mexico and now operates her scam from Tijuana. This poorly written self published absurdity is one of the primary materials of her repugnant and exploitative project.

The sad fact is that some seriously ill people might actually accept her bizarre and utterly baseless claim that pretty much all serious illnesses are caused by a liver fluke that has never been observed outside its limited natural range in Southeast Asia, and can be cured by her frankly abusive methods. Clark also sells fake machines claimed to diagnose illness and "zap" pathogens that are not even theoretically plausible, let alone tested and proven. She is a nasty piece of work, greedy for whatever money she can con out of frightened people, whatever the cost. Avoid.

For anyone interested in the real harm this quack and her team cause (rather than relying on the obviously fictional testimonials inserted on to this site as "5 star" reviews), see:

5-0 out of 5 stars See through the lies of hurting drug companies
Three sources of info. Books called Brain Builders, The Holy Movement, and the website Iamthewitness.com.

I havn't read this book, but there are a few things I do know. First of all the negative reviews try to use dumbing down tactics. Second, people of any perfesion ALWAYS try to make things seem more complicated than they really are. A CHILD could do ANYTHING that an older person can do. Build a house, build wealth, fix a car, ace any test, go through school in a fraction of the usual time, and stay in perfect health. To say that there is no cure for aids is absurd. Remember this phrase Delta-32.

There are aparently 7 diferent human inteligences, on average an in dividual will have 2. Weather they are drawing, music, sports, interpersonal skills, linguistics, intrapersonal skills or science. Acording to the book brain builders. I may not be good at linguistics, but I'm good at science. People good at that notice patterns, conect the dots, they are good with math. I am very good at putting 2 and 2 together.
Most, well actually ALL diseases come from a congested colon. People in movies and shows don't look near as good as they used to. Doctors are no exeption. To say that you are a doctor doesn't mean a thing in the world other than it must suck to be you.

I forgot where I learned about the what is it 17 or 19 dumbing down tactics that the money changers and others use. It started from a UF student tasered YOUTUBE clip that mentioned Iamthewitness.com, from there I somehow seen a link or some otherwebsite that mentions the dumbing down tactics. The book The Holy Movement will tell you how to get rid of ALL diseases. And I would guess that the book Cure for Hiv and Aids would help you steam roll your way to better health without even reading it. I would try before I buy though.

4-0 out of 5 stars do not be too quick to dismiss this
The negative reviews of this book all seem to promote antiretroviral drugs. These are by no means a magic bullet. They have many documented side effects and drug interactions, they are very expensive, and due to mutations are far from 100% effective. Alternative causes, treatments, and co-factors need to be investigated. The scientific evidence suggests that parasites play a major part in the development of AIDS. The steps that Dr. Clark suggests have been shown effective in eliminating parasites. Anyone who is HIV+ should try the steps outlined in this book. It is inexpensive, safe, and may very well be effective. Dr. Clark even encloses case studies of people who improved dramatically on this program. A negative review stated that since no mainstream publications, conferences,or papers supported this work it is quackery. The mainstream often censors information which is contrary to their view. This is why alternative causes,co-factors,and promising treatments for AIDS are not being investigated. I regard it as dangerous to hide from HIV/AIDS patients alternative information about the cause and treatment of AIDS.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Cure For HIV / AIDS
Could have better explanations. It is a bit hard to understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars This woman is pure evil,

Product Description

The governance of the HIV/AIDS pandemic has come to represent a multi-faceted and complex operation in which the World Bank has set and sustained the global agenda for by the World Bank. The governance of HIV/ AIDS. Through economic incentive they have restructured the is a political foundations of countries in sub-Saharan Africa and the pursuit of change in state, project that seeks to embed liberal practice through individual, state, and societalcommunity behaviour. At the heart of this practice is the drive to impose blueprint neoliberal market-based solutions on a personal-global issue.

This book unravels how the Bank’s good governance agenda and commitment to participation, ownership and transparency manifests itself in practice, through the Multi-Country AIDS Program (MAP), and crucially how it is pushing an agenda whichthat sees a shift in both global health interventions and state configuration in sub-Saharan Africa. The book considers the mechanisms used by the Bank – and the problems therein – to engage the state, civil society and the individual in responding to the HIV/AIDS crisis, and how these mechanisms have been exported to other global projects such as the Global Fund and UNAIDS. Harman argues in conclusion that not only has the Bank set the global agenda for HIV/AIDS, but underpinning this is a wider commitment to liberal governance reform through neoliberal incentive.

Making an important contribution to our understanding of global governance and international politics, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of politics, international political economy, international relations, development studies and civil society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant teaching guide
Considering the very few non-scholarly sources available, HIV: The First Year is extremely user friendly and informative guide from which to teach. As an advanced paramedic instructor for a third-party provider, I found the recent information on drug regimens and the infectious process invaluable. Relatively inexpensive, HIV: The First Year should be required reading for any pre-hospital or hospital clinician in close contact with HIV/AIDS patients.

2-0 out of 5 stars Author has a major conflict of interest
I got this thinking it would be helpful in my job as a HIV Case Manager, was I wrong. The author has a major conflict of interest with the pharmaceutical industry and it skews his viewpoints tremendously to the detriment of the patient. The only reason I rate this at 2 stars is it is good at approaching the emotional and psychological aspects of being newly diagnosed and the stigma associated with it.Avoid any of the chapters dealing with medical treatment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent

Books on Health:Smart Approach to H.I.V.
(December 9, 2003)

It is hard to be optimistic about an incurable disease, but the author of this supportive resource, a writer who has had H.I.V. for 25 years, manages to do it. "Now that I'm healthy," he writes, "I'm far more worried about getting in a car accident on the Los Angeles Freeway than I am about getting sick from H.I.V."

Mr. Grodeck, an online editor for the RAND Corporation, guides readers through the first seven days after diagnosis, the next three weeks, and the rest of the year.

Combining the human element with essential information about treatment options, choosing the right doctors, the importance of diet and exercise, holistic alternatives and sex, the book transforms a complex disease into one that can be understood and managed.

In his discussion of treatment options, Mr. Grodeck takes a level-headed approach.

While noting that the new generation of medicines, taken together in various combinations, can slow or even halt the virus, he cautions that so-called alternative therapies do not improve the course of H.I.V. and that some are dangerous and can make the infection worse.

"If you like gambling," he writes, "you'll love herbal medicine. Most herbal or plant-based medicines haven't been properly tested, so they are risky." Moreover, he says, people taking prescription drugs should "be careful about taking herbs and supplements."

"Herbs and supplements do not work for treating H.I.V.," Mr. Grodeck concludes, "but some forms of alternative medicine help with symptoms of anxiety and depression." ... Read more

Product Description

Reflecting the current state of research into the communication aspects of HIV/AIDS, this volume explores AIDS-related communication scholarship, moving forward from the 1992 publication AIDS: A Communication Perspective.

Editors Timothy Edgar, Seth M. Noar, and Vicki S. Freimuth have developed this up-to-date collection to focus on today’s key communication issues in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Chapters herein examine the interplay of the messages individuals receive about AIDS at the public level as well as the messages exchanged between individuals at the interpersonal level. Acknowledging how the face of HIV/AIDS has changed since 1992, the volume promotes the perspective that an understanding of effective communication through both mediated and interpersonal channels is essential to winning the continued battle against AIDS.

Issues addressed here include:

  • Social stigma associated with the disease, social support and those living with HIV/AIDS, and the current state of HIV testing
  • Parent–child discussions surrounding HIV/AIDS and safer sexual behavior, and cultural sensitivity relating to developing HIV prevention and sex education programs
  • The effectiveness of health campaigns to impact attitudes, norms, and behavior, as well as the current state of entertainment education and its ability to contribute to HIV prevention
  • News media coverage of HIV/AIDS and the impact of the agenda-setting function on public opinion and policy making
  • Health literacy and its importance to the health and well-being of those undergoing HIV treatment.
  • The role of technological innovations, most notably the Internet, used for both prevention interventions as well as risky behavior

The volume also includes exemplars that showcase the diversity of approaches to health communication used to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic. These cases include interpersonal and mass communication mediums; traditional along with new media and technology; research by academics and practitioners; individual as well as community-based approaches; work based in the United States and internationally; and campaigns directed at at-risk, HIV- positive, as well as general populations.

With new topics, new contributors, and a broadened scope, this book goes beyond a revision of the 1992 volume to reflect the current state of communication research on HIV/AIDS across key contexts. It is designed for academics, researchers, practitioners, and students in health communication, health psychology, and other areas of AIDS research. As a unique examination of communication research, it makes an indelible contribution to the growing knowledge base of communication approaches to combating HIV/AIDS.

Product Description
With improvements in the treatment of HIV disease, gay men in great numbers are surviving--and thriving--into middle and older age. While increased longevity brings new hope, it also raises unanticipated challenges, particularly for gay men who never thought they would live this long: How do I deal with all the physical changes? Who can I rely on as I get older? Is a relationship still in the cards for me? What about sex? How should I prepare for old age?
A one-of-a-kind guide for gay men aging with HIV, Aging with HIV offers an upbeat, down-to-earth approach for adapting to change, whether driven by age, AIDS, or both. Psychotherapist James Masten and physician James Schmidtberger shed light on the many common assumptions and fears of aging with HIV. Aging with HIV provides concrete solutions for facing midlife with a positive outlook, offering a wealth of advice for breaking unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms. The book describes the nine changes common to gay men as they age with HIV, discusses the four challenges of aging, and offers a unique ten-step path to optimal aging with HIV, helping the reader to tailor the book's suggestions to the realities of their lives. Woven throughout the book are first-person narratives from men who recount what worked--and did not work--for them.
