Product Description

AIDS is the most devastating communicable disease in history, and structures of poverty and injustice are magnifying the crisis in underresourced countries.

More than 36 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS—the vast majority of them in the poor world, or in poor and marginalized communities within wealthy countries. And since AIDS was first recognized in the early 1980s, 13 million children have been orphaned and 22 million people have died from the disease.

Irwin and Millen, co-authors of the critically praised Dying for Growth: Global Inequality and the Health of the Poor, demonstrate that it is morally imperative and practically feasible to control the spread of AIDS by overturning common myths about treatment and prevention.

For example, it is often argued that ordinary citizens in rich countries can do little to fight AIDS in poor counties. But Irwin and Millen show how individual activists, students, health providers, and members of international health organizations have helped to play pivotal roles in lowering drug prices and securing increased funding for vaccine development. Activism and education by groups like ACT UP, Student Global AIDS Campaign, and various religious organizations is forcing national and international leaders to take greater responsibility for the global AIDS crisis.

Features a comprehensive resource guide. Illustrated with photographs.Alexander Irwin is an assistant professor of religious studies at Amherst College. Joyce Millen is Director of Research for the Institute for Health and Social Justice. Irwin and Millen are co-authors of Dying for Growth: Global Inequality and the Health of the Poor. James Orbinski, president of Doctors Without Borders, called Dying for Growth "deeply intelligent, thoroughly researched—a must-read for all citizens and activists committed to meaningful change."

Product Description
For thousands of years boys known as "bleeders" faced an early, painful death from hemophilia. Dubbed "the Royal Disease" because of its identification with Queen Victoria, the world's most renowned carrier, hemophilia is a genetic disease whose sufferers had little recourse until the mid-twentieth century. In the first book to chronicle the emergence and transformation of the hemophilia community, Susan Resnik sets her story within our national political landscapewhere the disease is also a social, psychological, and economic experience.Blood Saga includes many players and domains: men with hemophilia and their families, medical personnel, science researchers, and the author herself, who was Director of Education of the National Hemophilia Foundation in the early 1980s. At that time the "miracle treatment" of freeze-dried pooled plasma blood products enabled men with hemophilia to lead full, normal lives. Then the AIDS virus infiltrated the treatment system and over fifty percent of the hemophilia community became HIV-positive. But rather than collapsing, this community refocused its priorities, extended its reach, and helped shape blood safety policies to prevent further tragedy. The hemophilia community includes people from every socioeconomic and ethnic group, and Resnik's narrative and use of oral histories never lose touch with those affected by the disease. Her extensive informant interviewing allows much of this social history to be told by participants on all levels: parents, wives, nurses, doctors, government agency directors, health care providers, and many others.Gene insertion therapy now holds the promise of a cure for hemophilia in the near future. Scientific breakthroughs inevitably become intertwined with the industry and academic medical centers that govern the national health care system. And in that system, says Resnik, costs and safety are sometimes contending issues. She makes clear that the lessons learned in Blood Saga apply to all of us. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Despicable
Shame on the author for participating in the widespread "sweeping under the carpet".

The blood distributors deliberately sold infected hemophilia products and millions were infected with hepatitis, AIDS, etc. They intentionally used risky paid donors and unsafe manufacturing techniques because they figured the hemophiliacs were a small group they could abuse w/o anyone caring, and they'd be dead without the medications anyway. When they encountered resistance from the government, they just bribed and strong armed the government to let them keep doing these things--long after it wasn't legal to use these tactics to make blood products for non-hemophiliacs.

National Hemophilia Foundation sold their soul by taking big payments from these companies and even testified in court against the hemophiliacs.

There has never been any meaningful or comprehensive apology/retribution to those affected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book i bought online.
This was one of several times i have bought a book online, before i have been very disppointed and upset for the quality of the books. This book looked brand new and it was worth half of what they were selling it in school. The book is very intereted, detailed, and worth buying to read. I had to buy it for my class but if i would of ever heard it was good to educate yourself, i probably would of bought it before. Hope this helps. Also the book shipped on time and with good packaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
AIDS Fundamentals Science and Society is like reading about the background and history information in a "Dummies Guide to HIV/AIDS" book. The book is informative and incredibly simplistic, it's about as easy as it gets learning about such a complex subject. From taking the class at UC Irvine, I know that it definitely relates to the lectures from professor Hung Fan... The book is easier to understand than his lecture material!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that is continuously updated
An amazing book.I came to know it by being a student in the class that the authors teach at UC Irvine--AIDS Fundamentals (by far the most informative and interesting class I have ever taken). I read the second edition, originally--the great thing about this book is that it is consistantly updated textbook--if you read each edition as it appears, you keep up with the developments. This is a book to be read over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone!
This book is a must-have for anyone who works in health education or is a practitioner of any sort.Fan et al have created an easy-to-read yet detailed account of HIV and AIDS from the views of the epidemiologist, virologist, health care worker, psychologist, sociologist, and anyone else interested in the topic.I first encountered this book in 1999 as a student enrolled in a course on HIV and it's impact on our society.I now use it in teaching County sponsored HIV/STD workshops and mini courses to youth ages 13-19 and to professors and students at my university. ... Product Description
The first decade of the HIV/AIDS epidemic was defined by young gay men dying and activism. The second decade saw people of colour and women account for the majority of those with HIV, as well as the development of effective drugs and the hope that HIV could become treatable or even curable. In this third decade, HIV has evolved into a chronic manageable disease. Few would have ever thought that there would be large numbers of older adults living with HIV in our lifetimes. Developing a strategy to best sustain the health and quality of life for the ageing population living with HIV requires a rigorous assessment of this group's characteristics and needs. 'Research on Older Adults with HIV' (ROAH), conducted by the AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA), is the first step to begin to establish a valid comprehensive knowledge-base of the unique characteristics and needs of this growing population. ... Product Description

Who will want me now? It's a heart-wrenching question for teenagers infected with HIV.

The number of HIV/AIDS-infected teenagers in the United States is increasing. Nearly 35,000 U.S. teenagers now have AIDS. Far more have been diagnosed with HIV, and an undetermined number have the virus and do not yet know. Each year, some 1,700 young people aged 13 to 24 are diagnosed with the ravaging end result of this infection: AIDS.

In this volume, experts who work with HIV/AIDS-infected teenagers examine the psychological and social fallout compounding the frightening medical issues faced by adolescents who've received the diagnosis. Readers share the challenge with teens as they face the stigma of HIV/AIDS and the tough decisions about who to tell of their infection and when to do it. We learn the hard truth about health care, self care, and new treatment options for affected teens. And we read about the heartbreaking end-of-life care issues for dying adolescents. Perhaps most important, the authors offer resources teens and their families can turn to for information and support. And they explain what family, friends, teachers, and other professionals can do to help infected teens maximize their mental health and their quality of life.

Evidence shows that nutritional supports can help maintain health in the HIV-infected patient by replacing lost nutrients, compensating for nutritional damage done by the retrovirus-induced immunodeficiency, and stimulating the remaining immune system and cells for better host defenses. This new edition of Nutrition and AIDS is a timely look at what dietary materials, supplements, and foods may benefit or treat AIDS, as well as nutritional deficiencies that can accelerate progression to AIDS and death. It offers a variety of alternative dietary and herbal remedies, including some that have been tested in animals and humans to stimulate immune defense or compensate for changes induced by HIV infection. In addition, it surveys items that may accelerate nutritional depletion in AIDS patients, such as cocaine, alcohol, and tobacco use. It includes data from animal studies modeling AIDS and nutrition, studies not yet done in humans but applicable to them. Including updated reviews on topics from the author's earlier publications on the subject, with a focus on how to use this nutritional information to treat or retard development of AIDS, Nutrition and AIDS brings to the forefront the most recent advances in understanding the nutritional deficiencies of AIDS and HIV-positive patients. ... Product Description

Risky Rhetoric: AIDS and the Cultural Practices of HIV Testing is the first book-length study of the rhetoric inherent in and surrounding HIV testing. In addition to providing a history of HIV testing in the United States from 1985 to the present, J. Blake Scott explains how faulty arguments about testing’s power and effects have promoted unresponsive and even dangerous testing practices for so-called normal subjects as well as those deemed risky.

Drawing on classical rhetoric as well as Michel Foucault’s theorizing of the examination as a form of disciplinary power, this study explores how HIV testing functions as a disciplinary technology that shapes subjects and exerts power over individual bodies and populations. Testing has largely been deployed to protect those defined as normal members of the general population by detecting, managing, and even punishing those diagnosed as risky (e.g., gay and bisexual men, poor women of color). But Scott reveals that testing’s function of protection-through-detection has been fueled in part by faulty arguments that exaggerate testing’s interventive power and benefits. These arguments have also created a perception that testing is a magic bullet. By overestimating the benefits of HIV testing and overlooking its contingencies and harmful effects, dominant arguments about testing have enabled a shortsighted public health response to HIV and unresponsive testing policies.

The ultimate goal of Risky Rhetoric: AIDS and the Cultural Practices of HIV Testing is to offer strategies to policymakers, HIV educators and test counselors, and other rhetors for developing more responsive and egalitarian testing-related rhetorics and practices.

Product Description
There are many well-established scientific reasons that the HIV/AIDS hypothesis is highly doubtful. In Science Sold Out, Rebecca Culshaw describes her slow uncovering of these reasons over her years researching HIV for her work constructing mathematical models of its interaction with the immune system. It is rare that a researcher who has received funding to study HIV ever expresses any doubt in the paradigm, and an even rarer event still when she abandons the field altogether. This book focuses on the changing definition of AIDS and the flaws in all HIV testing. In a much broader sense, it explains how the current, government-based structure of scientific research has corrupted science as the search for truth. It offers not only scientific reasons for HIV/AIDS being untenable, but also sociological explanations as to how the theory was accepted by the media and the world so quickly. In particular, this book offers a scathing criticism of the outrageous discriminatory measures that have been leveled at HIV-positives from the inception. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars An unfortunate publication
It angers and saddens me that this slim volume of distortions and inaccuracies may mislead readers who do no further research into the topic of HIV and AIDS. Please be wary of this author, and consult multiple sources of information on this subject. If you must read this misinformation-ridden book, do so with the perspective that you are reading a prime example of quasi-research whose author cherry-picks dated studies (that have since been refuted or shown to be erroneous) to suit her ideology. Most of her research is out of date. Why are so many of the studies Culshaw relies on from the 1980s and 1990s? New findings in the field of HIV research are published at a rather astonishing rate, yet Culshaw refuses to address even relatively new discoveries in the field, and seemingly excuses herself from this task by claiming that the scientific tradition itself has become too shoddy for her to bother with. The University of Texas at Tyler should be ashamed to harbor Culshaw and her dangerously inaccurate views, views that may very well put real lives in jeopardy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific truth speaks to dogma
This is a story about a math grad student who did her thesis on AIDS/HIV and discovered that there is no science behind the entire paradigm! She now is a math prof at Austin, but she has quit taking money to study HIV/AIDS in disgust.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much emotion. Too few facts.
This book is very disturbing. Its disturbing there are people who will read this book and make decisions about their health because of it. Living with HIV and even AIDS is reality for lots of people today, and this kind of pseudo-science doesn't make it any easier for them. Alot of people also don't have a science education to know they are being deceived by HIV deniers who "sound" like scientists.
If you want good information you go to an expert. This author is not an expert. The "detailed scientific jargon" another reviewer talks about in this book isn't even used right by the author. She is a mathematician. She is not a biologist or a doctor. She substitutes strong emotions and shrill language about this subject for good reasoning and facts. I am a scientist myself and I don't know how she gets so much wrong in such a small book.
Please if you want accurate information about HIV look somewhere else. An amateur who knows just enough to screw up the facts royally is not a reliable source.

2-0 out of 5 stars Science Sell Out
This book scares me. I read this book for a class and I will have to say that it has the potential to be quite dangerous to those who are in some way affected by HIV/AIDS and are seeking some sort of hope. With the use of mathematical figures and detailed scientific jargon, the author has created what appears to be a valid proposition--that contains half an argument. In an attempt to break the connection between HIV and AIDS, Culshaw has done little more than discuss the weaknesses of the HIV/AIDS correlation. However, it must be pointed out that Culshaw herself does say that there is no current understanding of AIDS which leads me to believe that her theory is based on what she does not understand. Overall, the book is skeptical at best and relies too heavily on repetitious points, mathematical figures, and scientific jargon that does little more than confuse and possibly impress readers. After reading the book I was left with a sense of discontent because I felt that the only thing she truly proved was that there is still a lot of research left to be done in the fields of HIV and AIDS--which should come to a shock to no one. I believe that the book is a bit reckless in its presentation of "fact" and "fiction," especially coming from a member of the scientific community. I would not recommend this book, but if you read it please approach it with caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
A great follow up to Peter Duesbergs "Inventing The Aids Virus" or as an eye opener for the uninitiated. This book is well researched and easy to read with some great insights and facts to show how ridiculous the HIV/AIDS hypothesis really is. She goes on to say that the HIV/AIDS juggernaut has become so big and powerful that there may be no way to stop it. I sincerely hope she is wrong about that, but it will not be easy.

Product Description
We have all seen the grim pictures of dying Africans on the news, or been momentarily shocked by the statistics; we may think we?ve heard all we need to know ? or can bear to know ? about the story of Aids in Africa.  But look beyond the harrowing dispatches and the noisy headlines and something else emerges: not just a single sad story featuring countless, voiceless victims, but many different stories that haven?t been told, stories of courage, determination and dignity, and each one with an individual human face.  In 28, you?ll meet the doctor dodging bullets as she runs a makeshift clinic in war-torn Congo, hear why Nelson Mandela decided to go public about the cause of his son?s death, encounter the trucker who has spent a lifetime picking up prostitutes on the lonely highways of East Africa, and have an audience with the Botswanan beauty queen proud to be crowned ?Miss HIV Stigma-free?.  Stephanie Nolen?s eloquent and sympathetic book paints a fresh and inspiring portrait of this continent in crisis, making it impossible for us to ignore and impossible to forget. ... Product Description
Get the latest assessment of the health needs of the transgender population

The impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the transgender community has been tragically ignored, and as yet there is surprisingly little research data on the subject of health care and HIV prevention in this marginalized population. Transgender Health and HIV Prevention fills this void by providing a groundbreaking empirical assessment of the health needs of transgender persons in several areas around the United States. Respected experts discuss issues that hinder the effectiveness of HIV prevention programs, including housing, mental health, and employment, as well as the unique broader problems of social stigma, discrimination, and the lack of transgender knowledge and sensitivity on the part of health providers and prevention workers.

Even though recent studies show estimated HIV infection rates to be as much as 60 percent among specific transgender populations in the United States, the transgender community continues to receive inadequate healthcare support. Transgender Health and HIV Prevention tackles the problems inherent in the healthcare system by first assessing the needs of transgender persons, then offering specific practical recommendations for remedy. Top researchers in partnership with community members in San Francisco, Houston, Washington DC, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, New England, San Juan, and Minneapolis/St. Paul bring empirical data together to assess what has to be done to effectively stem the HIV epidemic. This essential resource is extensively referenced with several tables to clarify data.

Transgender Health and HIV Prevention explores in detail:

health and social services needs of African-Americans, Latinas, and Asian/Pacific Islanders

sources for the high rates of HIV infection among male-to-female transgender persons

the prevalence of physical and sexual violence, substance abuse, and unemployment in the transgender community

risk behaviors of male-to-female transgender persons

health care providers’ ignorance, insensitivity, and discrimination—with training strategies to increase patient access and effectiveness of care

how traditional notions about femininity affect risk behaviors

a comparison between transgender persons and other sexual minorities

Transgender Health and HIV Prevention is crucial, one-of-a-kind reading for educators, students, researchers, public health professionals, social workers, health care providers, HIV/AIDS caregivers, and prevention workers. ... Read more
