5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible.
This is well written, easy to read, and all the airport design and management constraints are taken into account.
For students and airport professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to build an airport? This is the book to start learning from!
Wonderful textbook for Airport Systems and Planning. Very concise, with lots of cases cited as examples. Information is presented without being written in language that is too technical to understand, so the book is very easy to read and understand without much prior knowledge on the subject matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Collection of facts on airports around the world
Very well written text book, that has a collection of facts on various airports around the world. Mainly directed to students and professors in Europe and other countries where metric is a standard. I wish the authors have published two versions, one in feet-inches and other in metric. It is a good text for teachers in the undergraduate class, for teaching the basic concept of an airport system and how to manage and operate it. Reference to FAA and ICAO documents is good. I will recommend this text to practicing engineers who can get a grip on the concept of financial management and control in an airport system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aviation Managers must read...
Mr. de Neufville and Professor Amedeo Odoni have produced a must read guide to understand where the nexus of theory and the reality of aviation systems come together. Quite thorough and a good read, all the while being an excellent guide to a multitude of topics. Well Done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for airport planning practitioners and academic
Professors de Neufville and Odoni use real world examples to show the changing context of airport planning and design. No longer limited to technical aspects, airport planners and designers must cultivate new and critical thinking on such issues as profitability, revenues, and users services. Influences such as airline deregulation, airport and airline privatization, a global airport industry, and advance technology require this new approach. Based on their teaching at MIT and consulting experience with airports and civil aviation organizations worldwide they provide knowledgeable guidance to a wide audience.

To airport consultants and officials in aviation organization the book provides a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of airport planning, design, and management. It cautions that typical master plans are too static and point out the shortcomings of forecasts, supported by examples of economically inefficient and premature over developments. To avoid costly investment mistakes they recommend "dynamic strategic planning" in the deregulated environment, where privatized airports and airlines compete and shift their bases.

To city and regional planners it provides valuable guidance for making informed decisions regarding the fiscal and environmental implications of airport development projects in their communities.

For airport operators and airlines, chapters on organization and financing, user charges, and cash flow analysis provide insightful guidance. The authors show how to analyze interactions among traffic operations, airline schedules, and configuration and design of airfield and passenger buildings. The concepts of shared facilities and alternate gate operations are also analyzed.

They address the effectiveness of alternate modes of ground access and distribution systems and caution against the costly and ineffective people movers and mechanical baggage distributing systems, such as the one at Denver International Airport.

The modular structure of the book permits different users to select and organize chapters according to their interests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good book
It is a really practical, complete book. It's really simple to understand and covers about basic aspect of planning and designing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Airport planner and engineer's viewpoint - updated
The best of its kind for the technical detail. We have most of the other airport and terminal design books on the bookshelf (up to 2005 publication date), but every time we come back to using Horonjeff for the serious design ofnew airports and extensions. It is also good for layout design by theengineer for terminals - although the architects may want more books. But there is another book - the 2003 book titled Airport Systems - Planning, Design and Management by Richard de Neufville and Amedeo Odoni - that will become the definitive text on airport design for the first part of the 21st century. So you'll need both, especially if you have to deal with the complexity of systems and stakeholders that are part of medium to large size airports.

Horonjeff has got the full set of data tables and charts to enableyou to design anything. I seldom need to use the ICAO Manuals on a dailybasis, and only use them for cross checking an obscure point. The upgradefrom the 3rd edition to the 4th edition was a big one - it metricated muchof the book, added in the latest aircraft (late model 737, 767s and ER, andthe 777-200), and generally updated the book. Examples of new informationare some good stuff on runway/taxiway capacity, and some additions toACN/PCN. Worth spending the money to update. Essential to buy if startingfrom scratch. The best textbook for a technical course on Airport Engineering. Needs Airport Systems to have a rounded and modern view of masterplanning (and the successor to masterplanning - dynamic systems planning). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The first exploration of 'airport culture'!
Gilliam Fuller and Ross Harley's AVIOPOLIS: A BOOK ABOUT AIRPORTSis a winner surveying airport culture in the first book-length critical study of how information, buildings, people and machines make up a new urban form dominated by logistics. Airport studies may sound obscure but their results have wide-ranging impact on urban studies, city planning, information usage, architectural design, and more. As bodies become integrated into networks of daily life through biometrics and privacy evaporates, the philosophical and practical aspects of AVIOPOLIS become even more intriguing. An excellent survey includes color photo examples of airport interior and exteriors combined with thought- provoking analysis and statements. ... Read more

Excerpt: London Biggin Hill Airport -The airfield was originally opened by the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) during the First World War. At first it was used for wireless experiments, but was then established in 1917 as part of the London Air Defence Area, responsible for defending the capital against attacks by Zeppelins and Gotha bombers. To this end, 141 Squadron of the RFC was based at Biggin Hill and equipped with Bristol Fighters. Between the wars, the airfield was used by a number of experimental units, working on instrument design, ground based anti-aircraft defenses, and night flying. The base was closed between 1929 and 1932, during which period reconstruction work took place including the building of new hangers. During the Second World War the airfield was one of the commanding bases for the Battle of Britain, with both Spitfires and Hurricanes from a variety of squadrons being based there. The squadrons based at Biggin Hill claimed to have destroyed 1,400 enemy aircraft, at the cost of the lives of 453 Biggin Hill based aircrew. Because of its importance to the capital's defence, the airport itself became a target. Between August 1940 and January 1941, the airfield was attacked twelve times, the worst of which wrecked workshops, stores, barracks, WAAF quarters and a hangar, killing 39 people on the ground. After the war, Biggin Hill was briefly used by the RAF's Transport Command, and then became a base for both regular and reserve fighter squadrons, flying Spitfires, Meteors and Hunters. An infamous day in 1951 (see incidents and accidents below) caused the stations continued use by the military to be called into question. However in 1958 Biggin Hill ceased to be an operati...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=383748 ... Read more

Excerpt: This hospital had been created in September 1996 by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Novye Atagi Chechnya, Russian Federation. It was evacuated in December of the same year when six members of the expatriate team were assassinated during an early morning raid by an unidentified armed group. This event constitutes one of the greatest tragedies in the history of ICRC. The decision to create this hospital was made at the end of the First Chechen War in a context of great insecurity. During the battle of Grozny in August 1996, many hospitals had been destroyed. A mission of evaluation of the ICRC left Geneva and arrived in the city of Naltchik in Kabardino-Balkaria on August 18. Three possible locations were discussed at this stage: the border between Ingushetia and Chechnya, Grozny, and the villages south of Grozny. The mission left to the field the following day on 19 August. In Ingushetia the local authorities proposed a location to establish the hospital. The mission left then to Chechnya and returned to Nazran on 21 August proposing the site of Novye Atagi. This village is located in Chechnya, approximately 20 kilometres in the South of Grozny. The village was considered a neutral place, the location where the negotiations between the Chechen freedom fighters and the Russian authorities were held. The representatives of the village had guaranteed the safety of ICRC. They had also explained the local tradition of protection of guests. It says that an host lost his honours if his guests undergo some aggression while under his roof. The head of the mission of ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8488853 ... Read more

Excerpt:A deep and lonely valley: a perfect location for a Cistercian abbey. Bonneval Abbey is a Cistercian monastery, located in Le Cayrol , in the department of Aveyron , in the south of France . It is now inhabited by Trappist nuns. History Bonneval Abbey was founded in 1147 by monks from Mazan Abbey , in Rouergue . Its name means "good valley", a typical Cistercian name. Bonneval quickly became a rich and powerful abbey, owning extensive estates throughout the country. In the mid-14th century it suffered from the Black Death and underwent much damage and loss during the The Hundred Years' War , as the Rouergue was given to the English in 1360 by the Treaty of Brétigny . Towns and abbeys were looted, and Bonneval, although fortified, was unable to keep out the English troops and the bands of marauding French bandits. A long period of decadence followed. Nevertheless Bonneval was chosen in the 17th century to educate novices from every Cistercian abbey in southwest France. During the French Revolution , the 13 remaining monks had to leave, in 1791. The abbey and its goods were sold off, and the buildings subsequently quarried for stone. Today In 1875, Trappist nuns came to rebuild the abbey. They also opened a chocolate factory, and installed a turbine on the river to produce electricity. In 1902, they founded what would become the Bon-Conseil Abbey, in Qu... ... Read more

Excerpt: The Cathedral Church of St Cyprian the Martyr, Kimberley, is the seat of the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman, Anglican Church of Southern Africa. It became a Cathedral when the Synod of Bishops gave a mandate for the formation of the new Diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman in October 1911. The first Bishop, the Rt Revd Wilfrid Gore Browne, was enthroned there on 30 June 1912. But the Parish of St Cyprian dates back to at least 1871 when a chapelry within the Parish of All Saints, Du Toits Pan, Diocese of Bloemfontein, was dedicated and met in a tent in New Rush, on the Diamond Fields - the digger settlement which would become Kimberley. The first gatherings of worshippers of the 'English Church' in the rough and ready diggers' camps of the Diamond Fields took place in tents in 1870-71, while successive "St Cyprian's" church buildings, known now only from the pages of history, were in Market Street, and, from 1880 until 1908, in Jones Street, Kimberley. The first rector was Fr John Witherston Rickards, previously a curate at St Cyprian's, Marylebone, London. Appointed by the Bishop of Bloemfontein, the Rt Revd Alan Becher Webb, Rickards laid the basis for the Parish which began in a tent and is today the Cathedral Church of St Cyprian the Martyr in Kimberley. The writer J.W. Matthews would recall something of the primitive state of things existing, as far as eccelsiastical arrangements were concerned, on his first arrival at the Diamond Fields in November 1871: worshippers gathered in a canvas tent billiard-room: On enter...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22335650 ...
