Excerpt: Lighthouse of Alexandria -Sheraton Hotels in Batumi,GeorgiaPharos was a small island just off the coast of Alexandria. It was linked to the mainland by a man-made connection named the Heptastadion, which thus formed one side of the city's harbor. The tower erected there guided mariners at night, through its fire and reflective mirrors, as well as being a landmark by day. Legend holds that Ptolemy forbade Sostratus to put his name on his work. But the architect left the following inscription on the base's walls nonetheless: "Sostratus of Cnidus, son of Dexiphanes, to the Gods protecting those upon the sea" (original Greek inscription: " ") These words were hidden under a layer of plaster, on top of which was chiseled another inscription honoring Ptolemy the king as builder of the Pharos. After centuries the plaster wore away, revealing the name of Sostratus. The Lighthouse of AlexandriaThe lighthouse was badly damaged in the earthquake of 956, then again in 1303 and 1323. The fullest description of it comes from the Arab traveller Abou Haggag Youssef Ibn el-Andaloussi, who visited the structure in 1165 AD. His description runs: There are ancient claims the light from the lighthouse could be seen from up to 29 miles (47 km) away. Unconfirmed legends claim the light from Pharos could burn enemy ships before they reached shore. Constructed from large blocks of light-coloured stone, the tower was made up ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17724 ... Read more

Excerpt:The Personal Computer Museum is located in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Located in a former city building that is built from reclaimed bricks from the Brantford Opera House, the museum has been completely renovated. Over fifty interactive personal computers are on display from a wide variety of manufacturers, including Apple Computer, Atari, Commodore, IBM, Radio Shack, Timex, Mattel and more. The mandate of the museum is to preserve computer technology and more importantly, offer interactivity with these machines. Parents are welcome to bring children and show them computers that they may have used to understand where the technology that they use today, so freely, actually came from. The museum offers a large selection of original software in its library as well as a huge archive of computer related magazines. A perfect research centre, the museum is open to students to study the origins of computers and the various technologies behind them. Currently open to the public only one day a month, the museum welcomes private tours from schools or other groups and admission is absolutely free. The museum was first opened to the public in September, 2005. Its founder and curator, Syd Bolton, has been involved in the personal computer industry for years and dreamed of opening a museum while still in high school. The museum is run by Bolton and a group of dedicated volunteers. Unlike most computer museums, this one is an actual place you can visit and provides opportunity for hands on research. The Personal Computer Museum engages in computer recycling. Local residents can bri...http://booksllc.net/?id=8106258 ... Read more

The stadium serves as the exclusive home of the Sierra Leone national football team, as well as a venue for social, cultural, and religious events. Built in 1980 as Siaka Stevens Stadium (named after President Siaka Stevens), the stadium's name was changed in 1992 when a coup was launched by a group of young military officers which established themselves as the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC). In 2008, fans called for the change of the back to Siaka Stevens Stadium, citing a lack of sporting success since the change. The previous stadium that was there was called Reckrie. Reckrie was completely demolished in the late 70s, and China won a contract to build a stadium originally named National Stadium. It was changed to Siaka Steven Stadium before the official opening in 1980. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3719795 ... Read more

Former lighthouse keepers residence The lightsource and lantern house were originally to be used at Cape Leeuwin but were then built in on Rottnest Island. Excerpt: The Niamey Grand Market (fr:Grand marché de Niamey) is the largest market and shopping center in Niamey, the capital and largest city in the West African state of Niger. The large market complex lies in the center of the city in a neighborhood named "Grand Marché" after it, east and south of the European style commercial and government center of "Plateau" neighborhood. It was built within a colonial era park which divided the "European" and "African" sections of the city, south and west of the modern Stade Général Seyni Kountché and Niamey Grande Mosquée. The market is bordered on the west by the "Boulevard de l'Independence", which is also the north south route through the city of Route nationale 1. A uniform structure for it was first built in 1950, and is locally known as the Habou-Béné. A fire on 30 March 1982 destroyed the market, and it was reopened on 5 January 1987, in a project which cost some 5 Billion CFA Francs. That incarnation housed 4000 shops, ranging from simple stalls and covered tables to the 1863 permanent structures which range from metal stalls to modern stores in two large buildings. In May 2009, another fire gutted portions of the market, destroying around 1500 stalls and stands, 128 of which were housed in metal stalls, and the rest in the open or in less permanent structures. The fire was believed to have begun in the area reserved for food stalls. Fire officials suspected an electrical cable short sparked the fire, which began at around 14:00 and was only controlled some four hours later. Product Description
There are many things a train can do that an airplane cannot, e.g. go underneath city streets, split up into many pieces.A metaphor will illustrate the main point of this book: dogs are often not able to catch cats even though they are faster, because dogs cannot climb trees, jump onto rooftops, squeeze underneath fences, etc.High Speed Rail (HSR) planning up to this point, especially in North America, proposed to have dogs and cats compete on a wide open field. This book assesses the internal distribution advantage of High Speed Rail vis-à-vis air.It postulates a new paradigm: convergence of heretofore individually optimized urban and intercity rail networks into one coherent intermetropolitan high speed transportation system. The in-depth study of the competition between air and HSR in Japan, a country in which the two modes compete head-on and with little regulatory interference, will help any air or rail executive better take advantage of the post-deregulation environment. However, for transportation planners in North America, where widely dispersed urban areas deprive HSR from its traditional access advantage, it is a must-read. ... Product Description
This book reveals the inside track on the making of Terminal 5: the courage, the ground-breaking management thinking and the many lessons learnt from the leaders, the client and integrated supply chain teams, - involving over 50,000 people from 20,000 companies - which led to the successful delivery of this mega project on time, on budget, and safely.

Love or hate Heathrow we can’t ignore it! An economic power house for the UK, 155,000 earn their living from it and 68 million of us pass through it each year. Two decades of the planning, design, construction and opening of Terminal 5 has resulted in a gateway that Heathrow can be proud of.

Faced with the risk of opening a year late, being a billion overspent, since Sir John Egan in the early 1990s, BAA, stakeholders and supplier partners have been grappling with Terminal 5`s challenges. The result? £4.3 billion of design and construction delivered on time, to budget and safely is to be commended given the industry statistics but the acid test will now be the quality of the 30 million passengers experience and the operating costs that have been left to stand the test of time.

Sharon Doherty is HR and organisational effectiveness director for Heathrow airport and Terminal 5. Sharon has previously worked in consultancy, financial services and retail. Her specialism is people and change. 2002 to the end 2007 she was accountable for the approach to people management and organisational change on Terminal 5. ... Read more
