With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's performance against other firms on a worldwide basis.Doing so, however, is not an obvious task.First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector.Second, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full financial benchmarks vis--vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. A detailed portrait of JFK International captures the airport's exoticism and mystique, reporting on everything from its notorious criminals, its mind-boggling organization, its infamous delays, and its place in the world. Reader's Digest Cond Bks.Amazon.com Review
Before going on a cross-country flight, I decided to find agood book about airports, and was pleasantly surprised to discoverthis book, an in-depth description of JFK, it's tens of thousands ofemployees, and the general principles of the airline industry thisairport illustrates.

James Kaplan idolizes the brilliant essayist John McPhee, and at times, thisbook approaches the work of the master--especially the second chapterabout "the Birdman of Kennedy" (whose job is to protecthuman life and metal wing against the astonishingly potent threat ofseagulls).

The following passage illustrates Kaplan's reportage andwriting at it's best:

Down a hallway, toward passport control. "Human ingenuity isendless," Fingerman is saying. "People hide sausages in bandoliersaround their body. I've seen a man trying to bring an entire fig treeon his person. The roots were in his shoes, the branches werein his sleeves. One lady tried to hide her pet bird between herbreasts. Another was wearing a big hat, with a whole hatband full oflittle finches"... Now his restless eyes pick out two men having theirpassports processed nearby. One is Italian, the other Venezuelan; theylook as if they have on at least three sports jackets apiece. Theyhave huge fake-Vuitton suitcases, and Fingerman leans on one of thebags as he says, in his carrying voice, "How are you gentlemen doingtoday?"

I leave a little while later. Fingerman, who has forgotten all aboutme, is contentedly removing dozens of pieces of fruit and wrappedsausages from the men's bags as they gesture and shrug.

And how delightfully ironic that this customs inspector's name is Fingerman!

My only gripe is that the publisher should have spent moretime editing this otherwise worthy volume--and Kaplan (likeme several years ago) suffers from a dreaded syndrome I've dubbed"commatosis", the tendency to overuse commas. Otherwise, Iheartily recommend this book to anyone who wants a good peek at howairports work--and how they sometimes fail so spectacularly. Two aerilons up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a JFK "junkie" andI loved this book
Extremely well written with terrific detail. This book takes you inside the workings of the airport. It gives you a view of JFK and particular events that are relevant to the airport that you would not have without the benefit of this book. The real testament to this book for me is that since I've read it, every time something happens that has to do with JFK (TWA 800 etc.), I wish that Mr. Kaplan would incorporate it in a sequel so that I could understand it through his perspective.Kaplan's chapter on his experience of flying in the cockpit of the Concorde is worth finding this book even though it now appears to be out of print.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't give up on this one.
This book by James Kaplan provides an in depth look at John F. Kennedy Int'l Airport in NYC.But in doing this it is looking at a small town with it's different people and functions.Everything from the medical staff, to the guy who changes all the lightbulbs in the ground are given a face in this incredible book. It's a fast read, and it will answer all your questions. It's not just for people who like airports or for New Yorkers. It is for everyone who should marvel at how special a place JFK really is.It leaves you hoping that Kaplan will adopt the same methods with other institutions around the country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinated
I never thought I'd be fascinated by baggage handlers or traffic cops at an airport. But this book changed all that. It is a wonderful adventure from the most exciting moments in the cockpit to the control tower to theticket counter to the kitchen and beyond. It takes you to 30,000 feet allthe way down to the guts of the airport operations. From the beginningaccount of an actual plane crash to everything else, I could not put thisbook down. If you're the least bit interested in commercial airliners orairports, this is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great "biography" of a formidable, yet fascinating place.
This book is a very interesting, very well-worded, literary look at a non-literary, quantitative fact of late 20th century life.

For those who appreciate a well-written story of late 20th century America, this is a great book. For those who are afraid of flying and all associated with it,this book will entertain you and help you.And if you love to fly and wantthe answers to some of those nagging "how does this work" questions, this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable book for anyone fascinated by air travel.
James Kaplan does a superb job of bringing JFK International Airport to life. He allows the reader to sneak a peek behind the scenes at the airport and to learn more about how things work. By describing the history of JFK International, I have an even greater appreciation for the people and institutions that make air travel what it is today ... Read more

Excerpt: Commission Sicilian Mafia clans Sicilian Mafiosi Second Mafia War History of the Sicilian Mafia The Bonanno crime family is one of the "Five Families" that controls organized crime activities in New York City, United States, within the nationwide criminal phenomenon known as the Mafia (or Cosa Nostra). Founded and named after Joseph Bonanno, this family was the first one of the New York families to be kicked off the Commission (the second was the Colombo crime family in the 1990s). The Commission is a council of the bosses that help to maintain order in the Mafia. The unacceptable infractions that lead to the family being kicked off was the allegation that the family was actively dealing heroin and the inner family fighting for control of leadership. These were unacceptable crimes and the commission members decided to kick out the Bonanno family. Since then the family faced shaky leadership with acting boss Carmine Galante being murdered on the order of imprisoned boss Philip Rastelli. This family has suffered two major indignities. The first came in 1981 when they learned that an FBI agent calling himself Donnie Brasco had infiltrated their ranks. The second time was in 2004 when boss Joseph Massino, who previously brought the family back to respectable stature and back on the commission, became the first-ever Mafia boss in history to become an FBI informant. In 1927 violence broke out between the two rival New York mafia factions and soon developed into a full out war known as the Castellammarese War. It all started when members of the Castellammarese Clan began hijacking truckloads of illegal liquor that belonged to Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" Masseria. Excerpt:

Everyday, in the United States, a large number of individuals, couples, and families travel by way of an airplane.Out of all of those travelers, a decent number of them are traveling overseas or to a foreign country. As international travel continues to increase in popularity, it is likely that the numbers will continue to rise. In fact, there is even a good chance that you may make the decision to travel to another country. If so, it is advised that you famialrize yourself with the international air travel rules.

When it comes to international air travel rules, there are many travelers who automatically get confused. This is because not many people know that the rules for international air travel are different than the rules for domestic air travel. In reality, they aren’t exactly the same, but they aren’t that much different either.Despite the similarities, it is still advised that you place a focus on international air travel, especially since you will be traveling internationally.....

Description:
A methodology for developing level of service (LOS) standards at airport passenger terminals based on user perceptions is developed. The underlying concept is the derivation of quantitative values for passenger perceptions of service based on airport surveys. The check-in counter component is evaluated considering factors that have a bearing on the user perceptions of LOS: processing time, waiting time, and space available per person. The study uses data obtained from a passenger survey conducted at Sao Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil. The results indicate that we can derive quantitative perception scales from qualitative survey data. Finally, a multi-attribute analysis is done to obtain a composite evaluation of LOS at the check-in counter as a function of the waiting time, processing time, and space available. ... Read more

Kennedy International Airport -JFK Airport was originally known as Idlewild Airport (IATA: IDL, ICAO: KIDL, FAA LID: IDL) after the Idlewild Golf Course that it displaced. The airport was originally envisioned as a reliever for LaGuardia Airport, which had insufficient capacity in the late 1930s. Construction began in 1943; approximately $60 million was initially spent, but only 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land on the site of the Idlewild golf course were earmarked for use. The project was renamed Major General Alexander E. Anderson Airport in 1943 after a Queens resident who had commanded a Federalized National Guard unit in the southern United States and who had died in late 1942. In March 1948, the New York City Council again changed the name of the airport to New York International Airport, Anderson Field, but the name "Idlewild" remained in common use until 1963. The Port Authority leased the airport property from the City of New York in 1947 and maintains this lease as of the late 2000s. The first commercial flight at the airport was on July 1, 1948; the opening ceremony was attended by President Harry Truman. Upon opening Idlewild, the Port Authority cancelled foreign airlines' permits to use LaGuardia, effectively forcing them to move to the new airport. Excerpt: The Cheka ( - Chrezvychaynaya Komissiya, Extraordinary Commission Russian pronunciation: ) was the first of a succession of Soviet state security organizations. It was created by a decree issued on December 20, 1917, by Vladimir Lenin and subsequently led by aristocrat turned communist Felix Dzerzhinsky. After 1922, the Cheka underwent a series of reorganizations whose members continued to be referred to as "Chekisty" (Chekists) into the late 1980s. From its founding, the Cheka was an important military and security arm of the Bolshevik communist government. In 1921 the Troops for the Internal Defense of the Republic (a branch of the Cheka) numbered 200,000. These troops policed labor camps, ran the Gulag system, conducted requisitions of food, subjected political opponents (on both the right and the left) to torture and summary execution, put down (peasant) rebellions, riots by workers, and mutinies in the Red Army, which was plagued by desertions. The name of the agency was originally The All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage (Russian: ; Vserossiyskaya Chrezvychaynaya Komissiya po Bor'bye s Kontr-revolyutsiyei i Sabotazhem), but was often shortened to Cheka or VCheka. In 1918 its name was changed, becoming All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution, Profiteering and Corruption. A member of Cheka was called a chekist. Chekists of the years after the October Revolution wore leather jackets creating a fashion followed by Western communists; they are pictured in several films in this apparel. Its main base of operations is Tocumen International Airport, from where it operates approximately 148 daily scheduled flights to 45 destinations in 24 countries in North America, Central America, South America and The Caribbean. The airline was established as Compañía Panameña de Aviación (hence the acronym COPA) on 21 June 1944 and started operations on 15 August 1947. It was founded by a group of prominent Panamanian investors with assistance from Pan American, which took a 32% stake. It began operations with domestic flights operated by a small fleet of Douglas DC-3 and Douglas C-47 aircraft. The airline started its first international flights in the 1960s when services were inaugurated to cities in Jamaica, Colombia, and Costa Rica. It became wholly Panamanian owned in 1971. Until the early 1980s, the airline had significant competition from Air Panama, until then, a better known airline to the international public. Britain's largest aviation museum, Duxford houses the museum's large exhibits, including nearly 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery and minor naval vessels in seven main exhibitions buildings. The site also provides storage space for the museum's other collections of material such as film, photographs, documents, books and artefacts. The site accommodates a number of British Army regimental museums, including those of the Parachute Regiment (named Airborne Assault) and the Royal Anglian Regiment. Based on the historic Duxford Aerodrome, the site was originally operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the First World War. During the Second World War Duxford played a prominent role during the Battle of Britain and was later used by United States Army Air Forces fighter units in support of the daylight bombing of Germany. Duxford remained an active RAF airfield until 1961. After the Ministry of Defence declared the site surplus to requirements in 1969 the Imperial War Museum received permission to use part of the site for storage. Excerpt: Sochi -The "Kavkazskaya Riviera" resort, Sochi, around 1909The Zygii people lived in the area in antiquity. From the 6th to the 11th centuries, the area successively belonged to the Georgian kingdoms of Egrisi and Abkhazia who built a dozen churches within the city boundaries. From the 11th to the 15th century it was a part of the Georgian Kingdom. The Christian settlements along the coast were destroyed by the invading Gokturks, Khazars, and other nomadic empires whose control of the region was slight. The northern wall of an 11th-century Byzantinesque basilica still stands in the district of Loo. From the 15th century onward, the area, known as Ubykhia was part of historical Circassia, and was controlled by the native people of the local mountaineer clans of the north-west Caucasus, nominally under the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire, which was their principal trading partner in the Muslim world. The coastline was ceded to Russia in 1829 as a result of a Caucasian War and Russo-Turkish War, 1828-1829. The Russians had no detailed knowledge of the area until Baron Feodor Tornau secretly investigated the coastal route from Gelendzhik to Gagra, and across the mountains to Kabarda, in the 1830s. In 1838, the fort of Alexandria, renamed Navaginsky a year later, was founded at the mouth of the Sochi Ri...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=88314 ... Read more
