5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Alabama History Book
My child's fourth grade teacher used this as the social studies textbook.I found the book to be concise and accurate. The amount of material presented was just right for the target audience.I think it would be excellent reading for most adults who wanted an overview of Alabama History.

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist Propaganda
I can't believe this book was published in 1998, and by a University of Alabama history professor. It's awful, there's no way I could let my child read this--I won't even return it, it's going directly to the trash can. ... Read more

Product Description

This comprehensive case study of the “Tri-State Water Wars” from 1998 to 2003—centering on the shared waters of Georgia, Florida, and Alabama—presents critical lessons learned about the process of making water allocation decisions across political boundaries. Though the three states failed to reach a settlement in their negotiations to allocate water from the two major southeast river basins—the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint (ACF) and the Alabama, Coosa, Tallapoosa (ACT)—their case illuminates such issues as water availability, conservation, and the need for alternative allocations that can be applied in contentious situations. Alternative strategies may include dividing sovereignty for maintaining standards of each tributary, allocating benefits rather than water, and “enlarging the pie” by including joint development and even nonwater parameters in negotiations. Drawing on successful models of water conflict discussions elsewhere in the country, the authors provide a new conceptual framework for natural resources management.

The book’s 11 chapters, written by prominent authorities in water resources management, offer a thorough description of the tri-state geophysical setting, policy issues, and stakeholder interests in the ACF-ACT compact negotiations, as well as the long, rich legal history of interstate agreements and the role of the federal government in these agreements. The result of an 18-month project by the U.S. Geological Survey through the Alabama Water Resources Research Institute, which allowed for cooperative research among co-principal investigators from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, this book will be of immediate interest to researchers, policy makers, and stakeholders in the ACT/ACF, as well as those involved in natural resources management, economics, environmental management, conflict resolution, and water law.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Alabama you may not know
The state of Alabama has diverse geographic features, from lush green forests in the middle and northern sections of the state to white sandy beaches along the gulf coast. Wetlands cover a substantial portion of Alabama as well, covering some 3+ million acres. Before this region was settled, almost 8 million acres of wetlands were present. These wetlands are home to thousands of wildlife species and birds. Sadly, the wetlands of Alabama are often misunderstood and most people incorrectly associate them as mosquito infested bogs. This book serves as a showcase of spectacular photographic images by Robert Falls Sr. to illustrate just how beautiful these areas are. The text by Doug Phillips describes how the state of Alabama's economy and livlihood depend on these waters and it also delves into the scary possibility of endangerment and what this would mean to our state. The author makes future projections about the state's population growth and identifies areas that will have the most growth and how these areas will be impacted. This is a beautiful book filled with breathtaking images - a snowy egret perched on a log in the middle of a fog shrouded lake, breathtaking sunsets over bayous, close-ups of pitcher plants and water lilies, an alligator advancing from a stand of grass along the waters edge, etc. It should be an essential purchase for Alabama libraries and anyone who is interested in Alabama's ecology and environment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hernando de Soto
This is a novel based on Hernando de Soto's Sixteenth Century expedition through what is known as the Southern states (US) in search of gold and a passage to China.

Hernando de Soto (Jerez de los Caballeros, Badajoz, Spain, c.1496/1497[1]-May 21, 1542) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who, while leading the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States, was the first European to discover the Mississippi River. The exact course of de Soto's expedition is subject to discussions and controversy among historians and local politicians.

1539 to early-1540 in Florida
1540 - Through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi
1541 - To the west through Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.
De Soto died of a fever on May 21, 1542, in the Indian village of Guachoya (near present-day McArthur, Arkansas)on the western banks of the Mississippi.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Wilderness
While Andrew Lytle is best known for his role with the Nashville Agrarians, he also was an excellent historical novelist. Some of his best works, such as the novel "At the Moon's Inn" and the novella "Alchemy", deal with Spain in the New World. While one would not think colonial Spain would be fertile ground for Lytle's Agrarian vision, his message comes through very clearly in this interesting, insightful and exciting novel.

Lylte examines the ill fated and unproductive De Soto expedition which, in three years, discovered the Mississippi, ravaged the natives of the Southeast and found nothin in terms of treasure, found no colonies and made no converts to Christianity. In an excellent first scene, Lytle has heroes of the Reconquista and the legendary survivor da Vaca warn Soto and his men about what waits for them in La Florida. Lytle then takes the reader through the New World where the Spanish turn their backs on all the glories of Western Civilization and the moral foundations of the Christian faith in search of gold. This is refinforced by memories of Columbus and descriptions of him as an alchemist and a confession from a ghost at the end of the novel. Dreams of fortune can destroy men as they cut the ties of the past and wander in an unfamiliar wilderness. That is certainly a key aspect of Lytle's vision.

The introduction is excellent on Soto and scholarship of that never conquered conquisidor. It is not as good on Lytle and M. E. Bradford's essay on "Alchemy" and "At the Moon's Inn" may be a better place to start. There is also one of the stangest blurbs I have ever seen on a book on the back cover of the Library of Alabama Classics paperback from, of all people, former Sen. Bob Graham of Florida praising Soto. It's fair to say ole Bob did not read the book. Lytle's book is devestating to Soto in this provactive and satisfying novel. ... Read more

Product Description
The Gulf coast of Florida and Alabama is a fragile combination of barrier islands, low-lying marshes, and highly erodable mainland shores. In addition to sea-level rise, winter storms, and altered sediment supplies, hurricanes frequently damage or destroy the human developments and infrastructures that line this coast. Indeed, a single storm can cause billions of dollars in losses. Memories of such hurricanes as Camille, Frederic, Opal, and Andrew cause great concern for residents and property owners alike; events of equal magnitude are always just beyond the horizon and the uninformed have much to lose.

The authors of Living on the Edge of the Gulf seek to counteract potential loss by providing an illustrated introduction to coastal processes, a history of hazards for the region, and risk-reduction guidance in the form of site evaluations, community mitigation techniques, and storm-resistant construction practices. Risk maps that focus on individual coastal beaches are designed to assist property owners, community planners, and officials in prudent decision making, while a review of coastal regulations helps owners to understand and navigate various permit requirements.

This latest book in the Living with the Shore series replaces the earlier guide Living with the West Florida Shore and supplements the Alabama portion of Living with the Alabama/Mississippi Shore. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Alabama," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Alabama in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Alabama when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Alabama, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
The location of "the South" is hardly a settled or static geographic concept. Culturally speaking, are Florida and Arkansas really part of the same region? Is Texas considered part of the South or the West? This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture grapples with the contestable issue of where the cultural South is located, both on maps and in the minds of Americans.

Richard Pillsbury's introductory essay explores the evolution of geographic patterns of life within the region--agricultural practices, urban patterns, residential buildings, religious preferences, foodways, and language. The entries that follow address general topics of cultural geographic interest, such as Appalachia, exiles and expatriates, Latino and Jewish populations, migration patterns, and the profound Disneyfication of central Florida. Entries with a more concentrated focus examine major cities, such as Atlanta, New Orleans, and Memphis; the influence of black and white southern migrants on northern cities; and individual subregions, such as the Piedmont, Piney Woods, Tidewater, and Delta. Putting together the disparate pieces that make up the place called "the South," this volume sets the scene for the discussions in all the other volumes of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture. ...
