Product Description

A true classic of American humor.

Joseph Glover Baldwin left his native Virginia as a young man in 1836 for the booming frontier of the Old Southwest, settling first in DeKalb, Mississippi, and then in 1839 in Gainesville and later Livingston, Sumter County, Alabama. Blessed with a lively imagination and a good library, Baldwin prospered as a local officeholder and attorney and produced a series of sketches for the Southern Literary Messenger. These essays were gathered with others into this collection of 26 and published as a book in New York by D. Appleton and Company in 1853.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old Mobile: Fort Louis de la Louisiana, 1702-1711
Scholarly and well documented but at the same time most readable. I had borrowed a copy of the book before I purchased it from Amazon so I knew what I was getting. Now that I have the book in hand, I am most pleased to have purchased it. One of the things that makes this book so interesting to me is that I live near Natchitoches, Louisiana. Natchitoches was founded in 1714 and is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase Territory. My wife's grandfather, Francois Derbanne was under commission from King Louis XV of France as the "Keeper of the King's Storehouse and Paymaster to the Militia". The Fort St. Jean Baptiste, 1716, was where he was posted with Louis Juchereau de St Denis the Founder of Natchitoches. They had come from Mobile on a trade mission to Natchitoches. The book helped me to understand that Mobile was to French Louisiana what Jamestown was to the English colonies. There is also a fascinating account of Derbanne being captured by pirates falsely flying the flag of France. Jay Higginboth writes history that reads like a novel. He did his research well and has a full bibliography. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of "Old Mobile" by a non-historian
This comprehensive work is certainly not light reading, but it offers a degree of detail about the history of Mobile that is unavailable in otherhistories of the area. The author is careful to cite original documents, where available, to verify the information. The reader is reassured of theauthoratative nature of the work.It is particularly helpful insubstantiating information in less extensive narratives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Prize-Winning Classic
This review is about the University of Alabama Press Classics series trade paperback, 571 pp with Randy Cross' introduction.

Winner of the 1933 Pulitzer Prize.

"...set in the author's native Tennessee Valley region of Alabama, the novel's action begins in 1884...and it centers on the emergence of Colonel Miltiades Vaiden as a figure of wealth and power in the city of Florence."

"Stribling succeeds in presenting the essence of an age through the everyday lives of his characters...a good story filled with diverse and vital characters, and much of it cannot be read without that primitive excitement, that eagerness to know what comes next...."

4-0 out of 5 stars 19th Century Post-Reconstruction Life in the Shoals area of N Alabama
I am reading this book now and enjoying it. The portrayals of both the black and white characters ring true to me. Well-developed characters and settings. Reading it really carries me back to a time and place that I want to know more about. Can't wait to read more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Survival and Death
In researching my huband's family history, it was discovered that one of his two great-uncles who served in the Union Army during the Civil War was captured and incarcerated at Cahaba Prison. He, James Caldwell, survived his imprisonment at Cahaba and was aboard the SS Sultana on the Mississippi River just north of Memphis, when a boiler exploded as it was carrying freed prisoners and other passengers North. His body was recovered, identified and buried in his hometown of Litchfield, Michigan. As no one in the family is alive today to relate James' story and he died before he was able to share his war and POW experiences, this well written account of a black mark on the history of the United States where brother fought brother, adds information to our family history and brings closure to a life lost too soon!Even if you did not have a relative who fought in this awful carnage, it brings home the tragedy of conflict that continues among brothers all over the world yet today!!! ... Editorial Review

Product Description

This delightful divertissement is a lampoon of dueling culture set in southeastern Alabama, penned by a cousin of the better known humorist Johnson Jones Hooper. Interestingly George W. Hooper did not identify himself as the author, perhaps for fear that some enterprising duelist would decide he had been personally lampooned and take umbrage.

The main character is a figure familiar in outline to readers of John Gorman Barr, J. J. Hooper, Joseph G. Baldwin, and other practitioners of what is known as the humor of the Old Southwest. This tetchy blowhard is able to find a personal slight in every social circumstance of the most casual nature, to determine the only resolution that could preserve his personal honor is a duel, and then to find elaborate reasons why the affair d’honneur must be postponed indefinitely. The protagonist is accompanied by a Watson-like admirer of comparable wooden-headedness, who admiringly keeps track of all this punctilio—and constantly just barely avoids offending his patron at every turn.

The work ends with the provisions of the real “Code Duello,” which cede nothing to the fiction in sheer ridiculousness.
