One Canada is a vision of creating a strong and united Canada, out of the dysfunctional federation of ten provinces and three territories, leading to the Greatest Country on Earth. Canada was created to be a strong country, nurturing the regions, eventually becoming greater than its parts. As Canada grew from infancy, the provinces, the Aunts and Uncles of Confederation, also grew and aspired to become independent countries on their own. Since the Centennial in 1967, the young Canada grew, exerting the rights given to it by the Constitution. The Aunts and Uncles, having designs of nationhood, began resenting the young adult, forcing it to gradually ceding its control and now is a nearly impotent custodian of Canadian citizenship, and almost equal to the Aunts and Uncles in stature.

The Canadian Federation has devolved into a State of Feudalism, where "passing the buck" is the common denominator between the federal and provincial governments.Municipal governments blame the provincial for their ills; the provinces then blame the federal government with the buck passing in a vicious circle. Inside the vicious circle are the people of Canada bound in red tape while being taxed to death to pay for the ineffectiveness of governments. With each provincial government determined to create its own kingdom within Canada, One Canada will never be a reality; unless a new paradigm of governance is developed for all of Canada.

The new paradigm is governance at the local municipal level, supervised by the National government. The Fathers' of Confederation clearly defined the powers and responsibilities of the federal Parliament and the provincial legislatures. Had the clear division of powers been followed, Canada would, today, be greater than the sum of its regions. For the first 100 years of Confederation, the provincial governments, like aunts and uncles, helped nurture Canada through the adolescent years and into nationhood. Like the Jamaican Proverb, "Two bull caan reign in a the same pen"*, the ten provincial and one federal government have been locking horns together. Now the time has come for the provinces to remove their blinders, let Canada grow into maturity, bringing greater prosperity to its people.

Beautiful Words
Lois Hole's vision on the importance of education and reading comes through so clearly in this book. Her warm words resonate and her inclusion of "all" makes this a most inspiring book. This book has given us a gift by publishing her speeches, so her spirit remains with us. I particularly like the speech that brings the wonderful story of Mrs. Durocher, just beautiful. Lois was ahead of her time too.

Inspiring and moving
Caring is something the world needs more of. "Lois Hole Speaks: Words That Matter" is a collection of speeches about a woman who does care - about life, education, and her country. A university chancellor, gardener, and lieutenant governor, she made a career out of caring, and despite passing away in 2005, her speeches and writings have been collected. gets the basics right, doesn't always focus on most important details
This book explains how sprawl happened in a mid-size Canadian city: in essence, a combination of municipal restrictiveness and municipal permissiveness.

Calgary was restrictive in telling developers how to build (especially in already-developed areas).Paralyzed by fear of traffic and of NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) resistance to infill, the city's zoning and planning officials limited density, favored cul-de-sacs over grids, and designed commercial streets for high-speed traffic instead of pedestrians and commerce - all policies that made development oriented towards cars rather than people.To give a couple of examples: single family subdivisions were designed to have 22 people per acre, or about 5-6 units- too few to make quality bus service economical.And in the 1960s, the city's comprehensive plan stated that streets were for moving traffic, and "emphatically not to accommodate business."

On the other hand, the city was quite happy to annex suburban land and let developers build on such land.Where there was no NIMBY threat to worry about, giving in to developers was the course of least resistance.

Foran addresses these basic issues adequately.I do wish, however, that he had focused more on design issues (e.g. why wasn't development more pedestrian-friendly in new areas without NIMBYs) and less on issues only tangentially related to sprawl such as the details of utility pricing. ... Kowalski is the current Speaker of the Assembly, and was first appointed to the Executive Council of Alberta by Premier Don Getty in 1986. Since his appointment he has held five different cabinet portfolios including that of Deputy Minister from 1992 to 1994. Kenneth Reginald Kowalski was born in Bonnyville, Alberta on September 27, 1945. He worked as a teacher at Barrhead Composite High School, and was a civil servant working for the Alberta government in the 1970s. Kowalski ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature for the first time a by-election held in November of 1979 in the electoral district of Barrhead to replace Hugh Horner. He ran against three other candidates including Alberta Liberal leader Nicholas Taylor. Kowalski just barely won the election with Taylor finishing a strong second. He took 38% of the popular vote in the hotly contested race to hold the seat for the Progressive Conservatives. The other two candidates from Social Credit and the NDP also had respectable showings. Kowalski would face off against Taylor in the 1982 Alberta general election. The field in the race was crowded with a total of six different candidates contesting the race. Both Kowalski and Taylor would make gains while the other four opposition candidates didn't have much of an impact in the race. Evangeline Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, to a devoutly Protestant family. Her father is an economics teacher, and her mother is a beauty consultant.
