Product Description
A unique and flexible method to stop smoking by planning your relapses so you don't feel like a failure when you do relapse.

Smokers often quit hundreds of times before they're finally successful. Each time they quit, smokers know from past attempts that, even if they haven't had a cigarette in a long time, they could be caught off guard at any moment. Quitting smoking causes a tremendous amount of stress, and stress is a reason for smoking. To counter this conundrum, Dr. Sandra Rutter has developed a plan to eliminate the stress related to failure. Dr. Rutter offers smokers several approaches to planning relapses until abstinence is achievable. Not only does the process of quitting become less stressful, it becomes a source of encouragement.

Product Description
Aiming to present a balanced view of drinking and health, the medical columnist of "The Times" explains his view of how, whilst alcohol taken in excess can be dangerous, in moderation it is actually good for you. He argues that, not only is it good for the coronary arteries, but it prevents strokes, reduces the likelihood of late-onset diabetes, improves sperm count, and even has a beneficial effect on the intellect - especially among the elderly. He also contends that it matters what form the alcohol takes - that, for instance, a wine from France is likely to be healthier than one made from the same grape variety from Chile. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifestyle Changes to Control Alcoholism
Effective escape from alcohol is possible

No reader of this book can escape being affected by Doug Setter's description of his sister's destruction via alcohol. He turns her horrible death into some semblance of a positive by examining all aspects of the disease and those consumed by it. It's obvious that the only victim is not the alcoholic. As with suicide, the survivors suffer terribly as well.

Discussed extensively are behavioral types of non-alcoholics versus alcoholics. There are even chemical differences in processing alcohol that put certain persons at risk. His test for predisposing situations is excellent and makes the reader rethink lifestyle habits. Cravings become self-fulfilling because alcohol replaces needed food. Need for nutrition spurs more craving. That's why a healthy food diet, low sugar, and multi-vitamin regimens help. Genetics also plays a role with certain groups tending toward alcoholism more easily.

Processed foods and junk food only hurt. Sugar is "white death" - and not only for alcoholics. Allergies can play a role. Essential fatty acids are critical to good health. He encourages people to eat while consuming alcohol and to eat healthy - period. Solid nutrition combats cravings. Some things we might not think of such as the presence of light affects drinking. Sleep deprivation further curses the alcoholic.

Old habits fight change, but there are ways. Slow change is best. He uses the five-minute rule, self-rewards, and delaying tactics among others to facilitate needed change. It's hard to see how anyone reading this book could not learn a clearer pathway to a more normal life. It's your life to live well, and he tells you how from the "been there" perspective.

Product Description
Drug use affects nearly 1 out of 2 Americans and cuts across every social and economic boundary. The effects of addiction on the individual are great, and the cumulative effects on society are staggering. Knowledge of the adverse effects of mood-altering drugs, why they?re used excessively, how to identify persons at risk, available resources for users, and the problems addicts encounter trying to become drug-free helps us form an appropriate response to today?s drug problem. The Facts About Drug Use is an essential tool for accomplishing these objectives.

This remarkable book enables those with little or no background in science or health care to understand the often complex issues of drug use. In jargon-free language, Barry Stimmel discusses the differences in the psychological and physical effects of various drugs and how particular substances affect certain people in different ways. He provides current, reliable, and unbiased information on methods for dealing with drug dependency, alcohol and central nervous system depressants, hallucinogens, heroin, nicotine, marijuana, caffeine, amphetamines, designer drugs, and steroids.

The Facts About Drug Use is based on considerable research and professional experience. To facilitate more extensive research, selected references are listed in the final section of the book. A glossary listing common street names for drugs will be invaluable to those interested in identifying specific substances.

Some of the specific areas covered in this in-depth book are

  • discussions of who uses drugs and reasons why
  • how to classify mood-altering drugs
  • how to identify and treat drug dependency
  • areas of special concern such as multiple drug use, AIDS and drug use, drugs and pregnancy, drugs and sports, drug testing technology, and the failure of the war against drugs

Chapter by chapter, this nonjudgmental book helps readers develop a better understanding of the effects of mood-altering substances and the reasons many continue to use them despite serious consequences. This is a valuable key to the nature of dependency and addiction, and the external forces (including poverty and homelessness) that promote such behavior. The Facts About Drug Use is the first step to a solution of one of our society?s greatest problems.
