Get the newer version.First I bought this one to save a few dollars and then later bought the 2010 edition.

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.However, a couple of new chapters are included in the 2010 version, including the dangers of excessive carbohydrate intake.

I checked out the website noted by the Florida librarian. It is interesting and Gant is listed. HOWEVER, so is Deepak Chopra!I wonder if this is a case of the Establishment opposing new methods?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book made it possible for me to quit crack cocaine, meth and heroin.
This book helped me to prepare to quit using drugs and helped me to realize,in a drug induced state, that I in fact had a choice in the matter and no longer needed to be enslaved. I am drug free since January 3rd, 2006, because of this book and the supplements I took. I no longer take the supplements and am still recovering from 8 painful years of substance abuse.

Of course the medical and psychology field will try and debunk him for his groundbreaking work.Once you read this, you'll realize how simple and logical it is, and also how threatening it is to the money hungry professionals.

I've dealt with drug and sugar addictions, all my life.I've tried several conventional programs with no success. After only two days taking amino acids, I feel more in control of my life, and my decisions than I have for the past 20+ years.

Charles Gant has solid research, and he understands and knows what he is talking about. He explains it in layman terms so it's easy to comprehend. I strongly recommend reading this book; it's changed my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for more than alcohol moderation
I read this book as part of my biographical research on a man who was an alcoholic. It opened my eyes to the many aspects of alcohol dependency. Its intelligent, unpatronizing directions on how to reduce the amount you drink or decide for abstinence were thoughtful, and I could see how it would be helpful to those thinking through their relationship with alcohol. I think this book would be useful, too, for impulse eating and similar situations. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stories sound made up
I read this book and many of the stories in it. Having had first hand experience with what gambling can do I feel the stories in this book are made up.

The one that stuck out the most was the kid who used a credit card and wrote bad checks. In the story the police got involved and the person arrested. That's not what would happen in that situation. Maxing out credit cards through online gambling will not result in the police getting involved. Your credit will be ruined and the banks will chase you for the debt but no law enforcement will get involved.

Every story seemed very extreme resulting in deaths and people being jailed. I call fiction on this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars True stories but no solutions for families
As the adult child of a compulsive gambler, I picked up this book in desperation, looking for some answers on how I should react to my father and the chaos he has made of his and my mother's life, so that I am actually helping and not hurting the situation. I was sadly disappointed. The only "answers" presented in this book are many recommendations to join GA/Gam-anon. Unfortunately, there is no Gam-anon meeting in my area. I was also looking for an explanation of what it means to "work the steps" and what each step requires. No luck. Just a list of the steps. There are lots of true stories, enough so that almost any reader can find a situation they can relate to, but after you've read through Part One it starts to get tedious and really only depressed me more.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Losing Your Shirt" gives hope and understanding.
This book is an excellent source for understanding not only the gambler and his/her addiction, but the family members touched by the addiction. It is so well-written, that all members involved in the gambler's life(including the gambler) can relate to its message. For the spouse of agambler, it can help you to get to the most important stage of grief, whichis acceptance.Understanding breeds acceptance.

Product Description
Is it any wonder parents feel helpless to protect their children from the growing drug epidemic - cheap drugs are available everywhere and the unique pressures of modern life make them even more attractive to confused adolescents. But there are solutions that, according to Dr. Ronald C. Main and Judy Zervas, can only be achieved when parents knock down the barriers to effective communication with their children. This practical guide aims to give parents necessary insight into why young people use drugs and how the problem can be dealt with at various stages - from initial experimentation through to hard-core abuse. Main and Zervas explain how to instill healthy refusal skills in children and, if drug use has already begun, how to confront a child effectively without triggering unnecessary conflict in the family. While concentrating on the preventative or remedial steps parents can take without professional help, the authors also offer specific guidelines for arranging drug-intervention treatment and selecting a good treatment facility.Checklists present the classic warning signs of adolescent chemical abuse and the criteria for determining if a child can control his or her drug use. ... Very interesting perspective on approaching substance use in young people.I liked the book very much as it gave me very good ideas that match more with my values and beliefs, although may not be as popular in mainstream parenting trends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth to Set us Free
What a comfort to find one expert that hasn't lost his way in this topsy turvy rehab world. In the radical tradition of Dr Spock's Baby and Child Care Stanton Peele reminds us that it all comes down to love. The wisdom in Addiction Proof Your Child was hiding in plain sight: We need to act on our best nurturing instincts and hold on to our common sense. Peele reminds us how. With a compass pointing to true north Peele gives detailed and practical directions to helpparents negotiate the journey in today's world. Your grandmother couldn't have said it better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, prescient advice from Peele
It is fascinating to see Stanton Peele turn his attention to rearing non-addicted children. For decades, Dr. Peele championed the view that addiction is best approached at a societal, familial, and personal level - that the recent surge in the "addiction-as-a-brain-disease" concept is misguided and more significantly self-defeating.Instead his book approaches the genesis of addiction in the home, and teaches parents how they can avoid this fate, which is increasingly festooning our society.Dr. Peele's website offers a wealth of information and the opportunity for you to have your questions answered by the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not the drugs; It's a relationship
Fans of Dr. Peele's previous work will recognize his succinct, incisive critiques of common myths about addiction and treatment as he presents a refreshing alternative to ubiquitous disease-model perspectives. His familiar, practical approach to the struggles we all experience continues to emphasize personal responsibility and a focus on values. Peele's gift for storytelling makes this a highly readable page-turner.There's a warmth and genuineness in the examples that explains why he is a therapist in such high demand. The book trains readers to become better, more thoughtful, more empowering, role models whether their children risk drug problems or not.His anecdotes and explanations show empathy for parents, clients, and teens that no other book on this topic can touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Parenting Book
Dr. Peele has written the best book on parenting I have ever read!He continues to be a force in the field of addiction and health behavior change by challenging the collective cultural thinking for common-sense & scientific thinking! As we've known for many years, it really is all about love (which always has included limits and saying no).Dr. Peele challenges us parents to do the job we signed up for:loving our children, treating them with respect, and guiding with limits.Being positive role models for our kids, albeit imperfect ones, is and always has been our most crucial role, far more important than genetics when it comes to predicting "addictive" behaviors.Dr. Peele shows us firmly just how important!Bravo!Dee-Dee Stout, MA, CADC II, Faculty, CCSF, SFSU. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pertinent info
This book should be back in print, it addresses all of the issues of an adolescent addict.

5-0 out of 5 stars A realistic appraisal of the slope to climb
This book is replete with good quality advice and information, The short personal anecdotes compliment the central narrative convincingly, rather than as mere literary frills. It deals with the problem from both the drug user's perspective and importantly also from that of the family.Often overlooked in the whole troubling saga is the need for the family to continue functioning even without the presence of the drug abuser. The book is strong in this area and many parents will nod their heads in agreement with its points. All in all a very useful guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars FAST, EFFECTIVE HELP!
In a nutshell, this book was one of the elements that SAVED MY SON'S LIFE!! If I hadn't read about the stages of addiction (easily described and organized within the book for quick intervention)I wouldn't have realized how serious a situation he was in already. There he was, crashing through the wall to the final stage (despair/suicidal)of addiction and, because he had woven such a web of chaos (balls in the air for me to keep busy catching)I was totally missing the desperate truth, that he was going to die if he wasn't stopped! If I hadn't reacted quickly I truly know he would not be here today.

Babbit describes the ways addicts and abusers foil our best efforts to find out what they're up to. Our kids are experts at manipulation, and will go to great lengths to "protect" their addictions. They distract us from our instincts, avoid our attention, and unfortunately can plummet downward in a deathly spiral, under our very noses. Babbit describes ALL THE POPULAR DRUGS, the corresponding paraphernalia that can identify each one's use, and the symptoms displayed by someone using them. YOU WILL BE SHOCKED as you read the myriad of ways our children have found to get high! Have you ever grabbed a can of whipped cream out of the fridge only to find it's gone flat?? (they "huff" the gas out of the can!)...some even unscrew the gas cap and huff gas fumes right out of your car (keep a locking cap on yours!)

Nikki Babbit's well written, non-judgemental book is an ESSENTIAL primer for Parents of substance and alcohol abusing teenagers!! This is NO-NONSENSE, "IN YOUR FACE" information, effectively organized for quick reference to deal with your individual situation (stage of chaos) quickly! I am ordering several copies now to distribute to those is immediate need, and to display while speaking at parent's groups/community outreach, etc. Sometimes the despair and pain we parents go through is best channeled back into the world by sharing a story or insight or knowledge. Once you've "interrupted" their progression and gotten them help, your kids basically have a long process to recovery and have to work their programs on their own. If parents then try to channel their pain and worry back into community involvement it helps keep you a little more sane and helps the effort to reduce the distribution of drugs. God bless, and good luck to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Adolescent drug and alcohol abuse
I have recommended this book to parents in our school system that I know need it. The problem is the kids continue to manipulate them and lie about their drug use. This book is a life saver! It takes you through the initial assessment of the problem, to teaching you how to live with it. It is easily readable and so much of it applied directly to our situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Parents MUST Read!
I can't say enough for this book!It was clear, easy reading that helped me to understand what it means to be an addict.I have recommended it to other family members who are dealing with just this problem. It has been hard watching them struggle with this problem.I truly believe that they can begin to empower themselves and help their addicted adolescent if they read this book. I think that they could eliminate a lot of the misery that they go through by learning about their son/daughter's addiction and how it effects all family members.I learned about the role I play as an extended family member and how not to be an enabler.I recommend this book not only to parents, but to grandparents, aunts, and uncles. This is the most important book they will read to learn how not to enable their loved one to continue their addiction. The resources are valuable to those who don't know where to turn for help in dealing with addiction. The author, Nikki Babbit, not only has professional experience and training in working with adolescence and families; she, also, is the mother of a recovering son. I would highly recommend this book toall parents, not just those who are dealing with a teenage addict, because it will help you to be aware of and spot the signs of drug abuse before it becomes a problem in your family.Like the book says, it can happen in any family. Once again, BUY and READ this book! You will be thankful you did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Interesting Read!
This is the only book I've come across that talks about homeopathic, Chinese and ayurvedic herbal folk remedies to drink less and treat problem drinking. It looks at vitamins and lifestyle too.It really focuses on preventing alcohol craving, because if you can reduce craving, you can reduce drinking. And it encourages a healthy, balanced lifestyle - something that a lot of alcohol abuse programs overlook.

I've come across a couple of other books that talk about vitamins and prescription drugs as a cure for problem drinking. But no other book so thoroughly explores traditional folk medicines that have been around for centuries and work!I recommend this book to anyone interested in drinking less or herbal medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative medicine works for alcohol abuse
And this book proves it.Finally someone has let the cat out of the bag that alternative medicine has been used for centuries to conquer alcohol craving and alcohol abuse.
I'm happy drinkers have more options with this book. Now, in addition to cutting down or stopping, they can get a little extra help with the herbs and supplements in this book.Every drinker should own this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book sends an important message . . .
that message is we have to start thinking out of the box when it comes to
alcohol abuse treatment. i gave this book to a friend of mine who has a
drinking problem but was dead against stopping or going to AA. he was
receptive to this book because it gave him some organic alternatives to
drinking less. in other words it got him started doing something about
his drinking.

some people just need a little shove to do something about their drinking
and this book provided that little shove.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Cuts Alcohol Cravings Without Prescriptions!
I am so happy I came across this book at amazon. It's the only book I've
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to.There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store.I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
interesting things.

For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best.It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.

I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without
prescription medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?
I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective.I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.

This book opened my mind up.I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I just loved this book!
Although Im a friend of the author's, doesn't influence my opinion. Yes that was the initial reason I first picked up the book, but I was pleasnetly surprised on what I read.It really helped me to understand the struggle one goes through with having an addiction, even more so when trying to recover. I especially think it was brave of the author to be so candid about his own past demons, and how he was able to turn that all around. Although I don't have an addiction, there were wonderful self-moviating suggestions that I could use with any normal day problems. I highly recommend this book for anyone; wheather it's for an addiction, average everyday problems, or just for an enjoyable read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Wow!!! What I read here makes complete sense. The author's account of how he overcame addiction is so smoothly written. I enjoyed the book so much that I could not put it down.I recommend this book for persons who wish to help someone in need of the knowledge that they need to overcome a struggle with an addiction.I have purchased several copies which I plan to give to two people that I know who are having struggles with an addiction..........

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for making it so easy to read this book.
Thanks for making it so easy to read this book. My ex-husband's son seems to struggle with addition and I get phone calls from him periodically.Over the years, he seems better at times and then he falls back into it.I also think he has some mental health issues like depression. So, this book will be great for
him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immediatly Impressed!
I have already read the first few chapters of the book and was impressed by the authors candid no BS approach. In telling his own story first hand, this must have been painful to sit down and express in writing, it gives the reader who is struggling with an addiction someone they can relate with. I think that's important in many ways. Who better to know the mind set of someone struggling with dependency than someone who has been down that road and conquered their own demons. An excellent point is made in explaining that the focus of recovery should be in changing those things that are adversely affecting your life now and not dwell on the circumstances that led to the addiction. In many cases the individual had no control over those circumstances as was pointed out first hand. I can think of a few people who would benefit from reading your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical tool!
The activities in this book are useful, rational, and realistic. Indeed, as the book warns, the reader can't skip chapters but must go from one to the next and complete the exercises in each because they build on each other and help the reader understand himself and his situation better. This book helped me a lot to appreciate myself and to keep my addiction within reasonable limits. I have already been able to reduce the intensity of my addiction, and I continue to work on my addiction with the help of this book. ... Read more
