Product Description
Intermediate Algebra, 6e is part of the latest offerings in the successful Dugopolski series in mathematics. The author’s goal is to explain mathematical concepts to students in a language they can understand. In this book, students and faculty will find short, precise explanations of terms and concepts written in understandable language. The author uses concrete analogies to relate math to everyday experiences. For example, when the author introduces the Commutative Property of Addition, he uses a concrete analogy that “the price of a hamburger plus a Coke is the same as a Coke plus a hamburger”. Given the importance of examples within a math book, the author has paid close attention to the most important details for solving the given topic. Dugopolski includes a double cross-referencing system between the examples and exercise sets, so no matter which one the students start with, they will see the connection to the other. Finally, the author finds it important to not only provide quality, but also a good quantity of exercises and applications. The Dugopolski series is known for providing students and faculty with the most quantity and quality of exercises as compared to any other developmental math series on the market. In completing this revision, Dugopolski feels he has developed the clearest and most concise developmental math series on the market, and he has done so without comprising the essential information every student needs to become successful in future mathematics courses. The book is accompanied by numerous useful supplements, including McGraw-Hill’s online homework management system, MathZone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very nice
This book is in great condition, it arrived on time, and was WAY cheaper than the campus book store.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Math book!
I found this book at a local bookstore which I bought for extra help in my math course. In less than two weeks of purchasing, I was just showing up to class for attendance purposes.I learned much more from this book than lecture. The lowest grade I made on one of my tests was an 80! The steps to solving problems are clearly written. The exercises start easy to moderate difficulty before challenging to use what you've just learned.I would rate this book five stars but on some topics it can be a little sketchy and leave you scratching your head about what to do next. However, I will continue to purchase any of Dugopolski's books as they are well-written.I already own two for leisure!

Also, buy the newer editions of Dugopolski's books. The format for the exercises and explaining the work is different.Editions made in 2000 (year) and after are good. ... Read more

Product Description

Combinatorial commutative algebra is an active area of research with thriving connections to other fields of pure and applied mathematics. This book provides a self-contained introduction to the subject, with an emphasis on combinatorial techniques for multigraded polynomial rings, semigroup algebras, and determinantal rings. The eighteen chapters cover a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from homological invariants of monomial ideals and their polyhedral resolutions, to hands-on tools for studying algebraic varieties with group actions, such as toric varieties, flag varieties, quiver loci, and Hilbert schemes. Over 100 figures, 250 exercises, and pointers to the literature make this book appealing to both graduate students and researchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coherent and Useful
This book does a good job at introducing some of the most interesting combinatorial problems in monomial resolutions.Although their chapter on toric varieties is somewhat weak, most of the other chapters (square-free monomial ideals, Borel-fixed ideals, staircases associated to monomial ideals in three variables, etc.) are very well written with challenging and revealing exercises at the end. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Beginning Algebra Students
I used this as a textbook for an Abstract algebra course I took recently. It was surprisingly readable, and more importantly, there are plenty of examples that illustrate the definitions and theorems they've given.

Just a single complaint:There are times when important definitions are introduced in sections that are marked as examples, so it's not really safe to skip over the examples. This can be a little frustrating until you catch on, but it's not a big problem. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better--the second time.
I'll start out by saying that when I took this class I myself had no intention of taking any more mathematics beyond this class. Fast forward a couple years and I'm about to take a calculus course. When I took the class, this book seemed illogical in its explanations for the fact that it didn't do a great job in breaking things down in plain english. However, it has just enough in it for you to figure the plain english out on its own.I ended up in a huge quandary when in my Gen Chem course in college suddenly required me to know log again.Me--having forgotten entirely all the properties of logs (because yeah, you're never gonna need it). That said, I needed a reference. So there I go and instantly I'm able to read it, and I find the language useful and easy to understand.

So the moral of the story is this:This text is great if you need a back reference, but you'll need a great teacher or a really logical mind to figure out many of the problems.

Oh, the examples also don't go over the most difficult questions you'll find in the text--so the instructor's edition is MANDATORY.Then at least--if you have the answer you can reason backwards to the problem to find you mistake(s)

I rate this a 4 though because it was also a very good resource for some things I needed to go back to in calculus and whenever I feel the need to refresh skills.

As far as the necessity of algebra--no its not necessary, but if you look at the pay difference between bachelor's degrees that use even a little math (such as accounting or management) and no math at all (English majors, humanities, psychology) the discrepancy in pay is at minimum $11000 (as of 2007).Personally, I'd rather put myself through a little hell during my four years in order to get a job that actually pays what I'm worth. And that's not too much to ask.

3-0 out of 5 stars Late shipping
I paid extra to have the book shipped expresss, but it took longer to get to me than when I ordered other books with regular shipping.

2-0 out of 5 stars I hate Algebra and I hate this book!
I'm right on the verge of graduating and the only thing standing between me and my degree is this stupid College Algebra class, filled with useless information that I'm quite certain I'll never use again!Ok now that I've vented about that, I must say that I cannot understand why my college switched from Blitzer's College Algebra 2nd Edition to this text.As you may have guessed this isn't my first attempt at passing this *#$% class.A few semesters ago when I took it we used Blitzer's book, and while it was still Algebra and fairly loathesome, at least it was somewhat understandable! This book is clearly written for students who are good at advanced math and plan to go on to higher math. (Talk of Calculus in the pre-chapter!God help me!)Ok, so what if you don't plan on doing that? What if you are just taking this class because your state government says you have to or you can't graduate?I wish someone would write a Collge Algebra text for the rest of us!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Again, Larson creates a thorough and CLEAR
textbook for college algebra.

As with his other texts, Larson approaches subjects from an analytical perspective AND from a graphic/geometric perspective.
This allows students who despise the Xs, Ys, and Zs of algebra to "see" what might otherwise escape them if approached only analytically.

Excellent text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Adequate Review of Advanced Algebra
Being over 50 years old, I have a hard time remembering my high school algebra. As my children are now going through high school themselves, I definately needed a brush-up on my grasp of algebra to help them.

This book is an excellent review test that will prepare one for most advanced algebra topics.I am working my way through it and have found it to be valuable in relearning advanced algebra. As other reviewers have commented, you must have a solid foundation in basic algebra for this book to be of value.Without that foundation, this book will bring confusion, not clarity.

4-0 out of 5 stars promising textbook
I just used this book for an undergraduate LA course.

Most of the book is remarkably clear and straight-forward.For example, the authors manage to avoid sigma notation entirely in the proofs. The book has a nicebalance of applications, computer work and theory. Before taking the courseI did some work in Anton's 7th edition. The definitions and theorems inNakos/Joyner are much clearer and less wordy than Anton's.

The book stillhas a lot of rough edges, though.Typos abound and the text is murky insome spots.I think this would be an excellent text for an undergraduatecourse if the instructor used it with a critical eye to its weak spots. The second edition, if there is one, should be much more polished and, perhaps, a good choice for self study. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best first abstract algebra book
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is very appropriate for first time study of abstract algebra.
Pros: Very well written, easy to read. Examples and answers to odd problems. Each chapter is written for a 50 min class, good for pacing yourself when self studying. Enough material for more than 1.5 semesters. All chapter exercises are broken down in 3 categories: computations, concepts and theory.
Cons: none

4-0 out of 5 stars Sufficient to master basic elements in algebra
This book provides a pretty nice track on group, ring, vector space and toward Galois theory. It is not a easy book, i.e. people who want to self study may feel frustrated. When I read the proof, sometimes I felt like doing exercise. Abstract algebra is indeed abstract, so example are extraordinary important. The examples in the text is not enough, thus doing problems are absolutely required.

However, I still trying to emphasis my positive opinion on this book: most due to clarity and completeness. Theorems are very organized, not cumbersome. Proof are succinct and suitable for review. This book almost covers all important topics in fundamental algebra, thus become a very good reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Math Book I've Ever Used
I have a Master's in Engineering and I'm a A+ student when it comes to math.Yet I've never struggled so much in a class and the book was not help. It provided almost no examples and would say things like "this is obvious."Well, it wasn't to me!Also, it was not clear at all how to solve the problems in the book from reading the section.

If you're a professor, please consider the student's perspective. This subject is challenging and it's no help giving them a book that doesn't have good worked examples.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
Terrible book, that was extremely overpriced. It had bad examples and few that pertained the the practice problems.it gave no insight into proofs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fraleigh?awesome, sure
This book was my introduction to algebra, and I can say that with me it hit its target - I not only learned and understood abstract algebra, but I grew to love it and be thrilled by it.If you are outside of mathematics and looking for the way in, I don't think you can do much better than Fraleigh. You'll outgrow it - almost as soon as you put it down. But that's just testament to how far it can take you in just a dozen or so chapters.

I would recommend, if you can afford it, also buying a copy of a zippier book like Hungerford or Dummit & Foote (ask around) and using it together with Fraleigh.Fraleigh won't let you down in terms of giving you the space you sometimes need to grasp things (for example, he gives Tons of examples, and there are plenty of easy exercises that allow you to soak in patterns in the structures for yourself) and an advanced book will give you increased perspective and power. ... The book is cheap at around 16.00 but that is to high of a price for poor presentation of the material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, formal, well written
On my desk right now, books by: David C. Lay, Terry Lawson, Sheldon Axler, Klaus Jänich, Robert Valenza, and this one by Schneider and Barker. I tend to go back again and again here.
I'm using this book as a supplement for the textbook in my class. Some of the books cited above don't quite fit the bill because they're so different from the linear algebra for engineering you so often see in classes. But this one is excellent for a matrix-heavy approach.
This book is "bare bones", indeed, but it is very well written. Some might not be used to definitions, propositions, theorems and lemmas but in this case this makes it a whole lot easier for finding (and referencing) the important results. The notation is careful and formal, but the explanations are crystal clear. On the back cover it says it's geared towards students "outside the field of mathematics" but I think they say that because it avoids a purely algebraic approach (like in Valenza where e.g. Ker is defined in the context of group homomorphism). The approach is the one of matrixes, matrixes everywhere (row echelon algorithm, etc.) There are, however, no "modern" applications (such as networks, or ecology) as examples.
Another reviewer complained about the difficulty in exercises. While you have "drill" ones, you do have more conceptual ones, but I think they're on par with the text. There are no pretty illustrations here, and you will see that you don't need them.
In some other books, material might be presented in a wordy manner, but in this book, you just say "ah, so what so-and-so is saying is just Theorem number X.X.X in S&B."
On the whole, this is an excellent acquisition for your undergraduate library. It is cheap and good. What more do you want?

2-0 out of 5 stars Surf the web instead.
For about three years, I haven't thought about linear algebra at all.But recently, I've been interested in it again, and went to this book for reference.

I'm lucky if I can find one nice clear example of anything in this book. This is a proof book all the way, and it's not for your general type of audience. This is bare bones stuff. That's probably why the price is 14 bucks instead of 140.

Instead of getting a book like this, I recommend getting a more expensive book that's easier to understand, or just surf the internet for information.I have had some success with the latter option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supplemental Superiority
As a physics major, i've been told by my E & M teacher that Linear Algebra is one of the two games to be played in physics. (The other naturally being calculus). So, what happens when it comes time to take Linear Algebra and the teacher only serves to confuse the material, and the college textbook is a normal college math book? (a.k.a. not well written or useful). Get Dover books. And this book delivers for me. Everything i'm supposed to learn in Shifrin's text is presented here with much clearer writing. (Especially in drawing your eye to the thereoms, any one who wants to Linear Algebra without knowing the thereoms or applying them to the homework should probably stop now and go back to Trig.) It seems this book would make a good stand alone text, provided you are willing to not expect calculus cookbookness, because it's my side text that trumps my main textbook for 1/10th the price. And in closing, thank God for Dover for making life as a physics major that much cheaper. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial; only good for the exercises
This book does not really teach Linear Algebra. It's very superficial and not interesting. Try Jim Hefferon's book instead and you will have a clear text that teaches Linear Algebra for real.

Anyway, there are several exercises in the book -- that is one reason to buy it, I think...

2-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text, but errors galore in the answers to the exercises
I'm using this book to review Linear Algebra, having been away for quite some time. The basic text is easy to follow, and the ideas are clearly explained. But the amount of errors in the answers to the exercises are totally unacceptable. If I was a teacher again (which I was years ago) and a student turned in this quality of work for the exercises, they would get a failing grade. The typos and errors really are that bad. I have found that I do not trust the answers given in the book, as I am using my computer to do the math to double check my practice. I absolutely have to agree with others, the book itself is good, but the answers to the exercises are so bad that I can not recommend this book, which is unfortunate as the explanations of Linear Algebra are actually quite good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fourth Edition is out
The Fourth Edition of this book is out.It should have corrected some typos that I saw in this edition. It's priced about the same, so I suggest you get that one instead.See link below.

Schaum's Outline of Linear Algebra, 4ed (Schaum's Outlines)

5-0 out of 5 stars When asked to recommend a supplemental linear algebra text, this is always the one
Over my career as a college educator, I have occasionally taught linear algebra and have had students ask me if I knew of a resource they could use for additional help and practice. My answer has always been to refer them to this book. Even the most abstract mathematical theory is learned by seeing problems worked through and then doing some of them on your own. As every math teacher knows, mathematics is a participatory sport and participation is defined as being intellectually engaged in following logical reasoning.
The problems in this book start at the very beginning and cover the fundamental principles of linear algebra. If there is a weakness, it is that there is nothing in the way of applications. Linear algebra and matrices forms one of the mathematical foundations of creating moving images via computer and that is one way to quickly pique the interest of the students (and instructors).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource - not up to Schaum Outline standard but good
As others have noted there are simple mistakes - I was suprised at the first few early ones I found (addition mistakes, mixing variables). I almost got another book based on other reviews to supplement my course text (Anton's which is pathetic), but overall the Schaum's Outlines have been very good for me and ultimately this one did have enough examples to be helpful.

Not as helpful as many of the other Schaum Outlines but I'm not terribly disappointed as I feared based on other reviews. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Less abstract than many
Not as abstract as many linear algebra books, with less emphasis on proof and more on understanding how the pieces fit together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Linear Algebra Book
This is one of the best math books I have ever read. I had to learn linear algebra for my graduate research and this book was invaluable. I just wish they wrote a differential equations book as well. The best part of this book are the excellent conceptual explainations, but the proofs are well motivated and clear as well, and I usually hate proofs. The coverage of Singular Value Decomposition is very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best text for undergraduates on Linear Algebra
It provides an excellent approach to Linear Algebra for self-pacing. Different from other linear algebra books, it's well organized and teaches how and why the ideas come from by providing many interesting examples.

It isn't only the classics, but the essential reference for related fields in my bookshelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a general review of algebra
I graduated from college a few years ago, but I'm currently taking night classes to earn a pre-medical studies diploma so I can apply to vet school. One of the big requirements for veterinary school is at least 2 semesters of college math--something I didn't have from my undergrad experience. So I decided to start off my night classes with Precalculus and move up to Calculus.

But there was a flaw in my plan: I hadn't taken math since high school and had forgotten most of what I had learned.

Enter "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Algebra". I decided on this book because it combines both Algebra I and Algebra II into one tome. The author keeps his tone friendly and funny and I found myself remembering a lot more than I thought I would. There aren't an abundance of practice problems, but there are 2 problems for each "concept" (1 guided and 1 to do on your own). That was more than enough for me.

This is a great book if, like me, you've already taken Algebra at some point but it was years ago. You remember a lot more than you think!

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most important purchase of my life....?
I actually used to be bad at math. I managed to pass all my courses through middle school and got mediocre grades, but mostly because I did well on all the soft grades (projects, HW graded for completeness, etc.). When I got to high school my poor math skills were catching up with me, and I knew it. Passing Algebra I Honors with a seventy-something and failing several tests, I finally came across this book and dove into it when I came down with a cold and took a few days off from school. After this book I suddenly understood algebra much better and gradually over the next two years math became my best subject. This was all pretty important for me because I had planned to major in physics for a long time, and if it wasn't for this book I may never have caught up and gotten the math background I needed. It's strange to think of where I might be now if this book had never been written.

As for the book, the clarity is excellent. You will not find proofs here, but expect plenty of heuristics and analogies designed for the troubled algebra beginner. Practice problems are sparse, but problem sets from other sources (even the textbook!) will be much more accessible after reading this book. If I could give this book more than five stars......

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPER
I stink at math, its totally a foreign language to me. I am currently trying to teach myself algebra so that I can forgo the elementary algebra and intermediate algebra before doing college algebra and my other math classes. So far out of ALL of the books I have purchased (A total of 9) THIS BOOK REALLY EXPLAINS things and makes me feel GOOD that I am actually GETTING MATH for the first time since middle school. I would definitely recommend this book to those who ARE having a hard time with math, just learning math, or revisiting math. I have yet to finish the book, but so far, it ROCKS!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this book back in High School
I've always struggled with math. From grade school through college, math has clouded my academic life.I held my own in Geometry, but Algebra, Trig, and Calculus were like a 3-volume mystery with half the pages missing. It was all simply incomprehensible. It didn't "click" for me--made no sense. No math teacher could penetrate my thick skull.

I was a "C" math student in high school and college, mostly due to charity from my instructors.I really didn't deserve to pass.I just wrote math off as impossible and went on with my life. Now as a military retiree enjoying a second career as a technical instructor, I feel I should have at least some grasp of math.Is it too late for me?Am I too old?I thought so until I started reading this little book.

What a breath of fresh air!My high school and college experiences would have been MUCH less stressful if someone had explained Algebra to me the way this book has.The humor is silly--the jokes are beyond corny.Yet the informal tone completely deflates the menace of Algebra.Math texts always seemed sinister to me--as unknowable as a book of voodoo spells.By contrast, "The Complete Idiot's Guide..." is about as menacing as the funny papers. The author chats about Algebra topics and techniques the way I might chat about football scores--as though it's no big deal.

And it isn't a big deal.Once I cracked the cover, I was solving & graphing equations within a couple of hours.More importantly, I understood what I was doing and why. That was a totally new experience.I went through a third of the book in two days, and I correctly solved every practice problem.I can't wait to get to the rest of it.That's new too.I've never, EVER looked forward to a math lesson before. So should you buy this book?Maybe. It isn't for everybody.

If you are a skilled or even average math student, you probably don't need it.If you are a highly effective math teacher--ditto.However, if you are a math tutor or a teacher struggling with tough cases (guys like me, for example) you really need to see the author's angle on Algebra instruction. If you are a "weak swimmer" like me, you absolutely should buy a copy.If you have been out of school a long time and you need a quick refresher, this book's a natural. If your own kids are struggling with Algebra and you don't know how to help them, this is how to help them!

Like my title says: I sure wish I'd had this book when I was in High School.

4-0 out of 5 stars All I needed
This book pretty much taught me everything I know about algebra, which is enough to pass a CLEP test.Good examples, clean explanations and balanced coverage of algebra concepts and topics. One criticism that I have is really more a matter of style points... while Mr. Kelley has obviously devoted much of his life to mathematics, he frequently writes negatively about it in what I feel is a blatant attempt to appeal to the likely demographic of reader for this book.Well, I don't like someone telling me how boring or lame a subject is, especially when I have to learn it. ...
