you sent me the wrong book.I ordered the one shown in the picture. The blue cover with the peacock at the top. If I can return this book for what I ordered, I would like to do so. This is not the book I use as a teacher, it is useless. Can I return this book and get the book that I ordered? It is pass the days due to return, but it should not really make a difference, since the mistake was on your end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math is math, but with something extra
This is your typical pre-algebra book but with a big difference. The text contains numerous references to biblical figures and how they used math, for example, the building of the temple by King Solomon. The math concepts are solid but ideas are given within a Christian context when applicable. This would be a great book to use for the home-schooling parent. This book is published by Bob Jones University Press.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Returned for Refund.
The book did not provide basic algebra information.I should have returned to Amazon for a refund. I don't use the book and never have used the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Confused Than Before
Miller is very convinced that he is a great teacher. He spends a good deal of this book telling you that he is. I however have to disagree.

Whenever I tried to learn a concept from this book, I always ended up more confused than when I started. When he derives equations he introduces unnecessary and complicated steps that ultimately contribute nothing to the solution. His descriptions of the functions are confusing and regularly use terms he has not introduced. The values chosen for the examples easily could have been ones that would clearly illustrate the principles being taught, but for some reason Miller usually chose the few values that didn't clearly illustrate anything.

On the plus side he makes notes of which sections will be on the Math SAT. So, if you are practicing for the SATs, you may find that helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Made Easy!
Bob Miller takes very difficult concepts and makes them extremely easy to grasp. It is the one math book that will not make you tear your hair out of your head!
The author uses a bit of humor and emotion to make math understandable to the average layman. The books are meant to be a supplement to whatever math text you are using. After Bob explains the concepts you will breeze through your textbook's examples.A great book at a great price!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite there
I can't figure out who this book is for.The author states that it's "written for those who want to get a jump on algebra and for those returning to school, perhaps after a long time".I fall into the latter category, but the book isn't particularly helpful to me.The presentation seems silly (or annoying, as the reviewer below says) and lacking.

The author states, "In order to get maximum benefit from this book, you must practice.Do many exercises until you are very good with each of the skills."There are no exercises in the book, however, for the student to do.Each concept is explained with several problems and solutions as examples, but there are no separate problems for students to solve on their own.

The author states that his "practical dream is to have someone sponsor a math series from prealgebra through calculus so everyone in our country will be able to think well and keep our country number one forever."If this book is an example of thinking well, our country is in deep trouble.Fortunately, I'm not as xenophobic as the author, and would be happy to use a math book from another country if it's written better than this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Annoying writing style
Overall this book was helpful to me in reviewing for the GMAT exam.Unfortunately the author had a hideous writing habit that he used throughout the book.As he would explain various topics he would add additional letters to particular words. For example:"..."At first I thought this was a typo, but it occurs on page after page with different words and is terribly distracting.I can't believe an editor would let this get through.I don't know if this was meant to be cute or what, but it is just...annoying.

Additionally, for a book that is obviously designed for those of us who are clueless about algebra, Mr Miller would often start off explaining new topics by stating something to the effect that he once thought this topic was hard, but now he doesn't nor do his students, so the reader should do super well.Excuse me, but if algebra came easily to me I wouldn't have bought this book! ... We all know the feeling of "I understood there would be no math"...and it is a fact math was one of my worst subjects in school and I never did get the concept of algebra....this book was a great help in refreshing my memory of the math equations I did remember and inhelping me understand the more difficult areas...I am progressing slowly with it at my own pace and so I havent completed all the chapters but it is very good has great sample problems so you can digest the information both by numbers and words....I recommend it highly for the lay person like myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great find!
If you are trying to refresh your basic math skills from high school, then this is the book for you.I have checked out several different basic math guides, including the "for Dummies" one, and this one is by far the best. It's small enough to fit in my bag, but still explains the problems well.I am doing so well with it that I am looking into the other topics that are covered by the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Phobia
This book has really assisted me in getting over my math phobia. I highly recommend it! Very user friendly!

3-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps some edits required?
looking at the Table of contents, it appears to have a great coverage, and crip layout for easy reference. It is good to review some of these basic concepts that I had learned many years ago, and good to go back on memory lane to school days...
I just got hold of an excerpt of this book's chapter 1 - numbers and operators - glancing over. I am not sure if it was intended or if i am missing something, however, page 10 has a typo. it shows:
30 + 4
70 + 6
---------
10 + 10
= 110

i hope such typos were eliminated prior to publishing. or am I missing something from the context there?

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for high school collections on up
Any high school to college-level student wishing to master the basics of math needs these comprehensive references that clarifies and explain basic math principles. Two new math studies titles by Debra Anne Ross are particularly to be recommended for math students, as well as non-specialist general readers seeking to develop a basic understanding of algebra. Master Math: Geometry moves from basic topics, examples and applications to building upon basics, Master Math: Algebra surveys algebra by itself and moves from simple algebraic equations to graphing, and her Master Math: Basic Math & Pre-Algebra surveys basic arithmetic subjects and formulas. These are perfect for study, review, or supplemental learning and are recommended for high school collections on up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Confusing section
This review is in reference only to Section 2.4. Adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.

I work with adults who need retraining for the job market. Many of them have 'forgotten' fractions. I am always looking for different ways to present certain procedures so that if one way doesn't 'click' with someone then perhaps another one will do so.

This particular section of the book contains some of the most convoluted language imaginable - and too much of it. I defy anyone to easily make sense of what she is talking about. This procedure can be tricky, but it needs clear language and examples to get it across to a person.

Other parts of the book are obviously well done if these other reviews are finding out what they need to know. So be it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review of basic math
I decided to buy the first in the series, and read through in a couple of
days. I purchased it mainly for it's chapters on 'Logarithms' and 'Important Statistical Quantities'. That's the reason for 4 stars. Those chapters could have been explained a bit more in detail. However, having said that, I was impressed with the ease in which this book expresses the overall information. I intend to buy the whole series. It does beg the question though; why can't all high school texts explain math so well and not cost 150 dollars! I'm almost finished the second book in the series too and I'm even more impressed. Review on that one soon. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Major disappointment
I took algebra in high school and that was the 1st and last time. I find myself needing to know algebra now since i am going to make a career change. I'm @ chapter 3 problem 2 so far I am on B and guess what both are wrong for the solution in the back. I can't recommend this book I don't even want to give 1 star. I bought it used but i am disappointed that Alpha books didn't proof read it better than this. I have spent days on problems trying to figure out what i was doing wrong. There really needs to be a recall on this book. If you own it give it to someone who needs a table prop or owns a wood heater it would make a great fire starter.

1-0 out of 5 stars basic arithmetic = FAIL
My husband bought this book (used, thankfully) to get himself up to par for some courses he'll be taking at the local Community College. He was working on some of the practice problems, and when checking his work was finding he got most of them wrong and wanted me to help explain possibly why. I took a look at it, and noticed he got all of them correct. The book was wrong. 13 - 5 DOES NOT = 7 no matter HOW you spin it (-13 +5 STILL does not equal -7). *face palm*
Although despite this, it does seem to explain HOW to do such problems clearly, so at least there's that. Still only one star though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author needs a course in basic math.
I was hoping to refresh my math skills before going back to college as an adult. I may be rusty, but I know that 18 x 3 does not equal 45.I also know that 14-3 does not equal 9!There are so many mistakes in the answer key for the practice problems, it is unbelievable! And I am only in chapter 3. Please, please do not buy this book.Luckily, I just checked it out of the library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waaaay too many mistakes!
I am glad I borrowed this book from a library because if I had bought it I would be very disapointed. I have found way too many errors to recomend this to anyone.

Suzanne

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes
I purchased this book to do a quick review for college level algebra. It is a good thing that I was only reviewing because this book contained so many mistakes in the problems it gives you to try that I wouldn't have known what was happening if I were a beginner trying to master this for the first time. By Chapter 3 there were at least 5 major errors involving the simplest problems, including transposition of numbers, subtracting and multiplying errors. I am returning this book since I do not want to spend the majority of my time reviewing finding out if I am indeed wrong or the book just made a mistake. ... Read more

Product Description
The New York Times bestseller-from the author of Math Doesn't Suck-teaches girls how to kick pre-algebra butt

In her New York Times bestselling books, actress and math genius Danica McKellar shatters the "math nerd" stereotype and gives girls the tools to ace middle-school math in her unique, just-us-girls style. Now, in her second book, Kiss My Math, McKellar empowers a new crop of girls-seventh to ninth graders-to tackle the next level of mathematics: pre-algebra.

Stepping up not only the math but the sass and style, McKellar helps math-phobic teenagers chill out and finally "get" negative numbers, variables, absolute values, exponents, and more. As she did so effectively in Math Doesn't Suck, McKellar uses personality quizzes, reader polls, real-life testimonials, and stories from her own life-in addition to clear instruction, helpful tips, and practice problems-revealing why pre-algebra is easier, more relevant, and more glamorous than girls think. McKellar is clearly reaching her audience: parents, teachers, and especially girls are asking for more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great help for my daughter!
My 7th grader keeps these books at her desk and uses them often. We both like the way the book is written and gives lots of everyday hints to make Algebra less scary for beginners.Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars a lot of fun help
My daughter's are reading this book as they pass through the units. It is funner than their math books and they often choose to read it during their reading time. It has helped them understand concepts they struggled with.I highly recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Use for Instruction incarcerated women
I use Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math to teach math to women who are incarcerated at the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) north of Phoenix. My students range in age from 18 years to the mid-sixties. All of the women in my classes have already acquired either a high school diploma or a GED degree. Unfortunately, many of them have forgotten much of the math that they once knew; so they need a "math refresher course."

Many FPC inmates want to improve their math skills, because, while they are incarcerated at FPC, they have the opportunity to participate in The College Program, which was initiated about 13 years ago by Professor Peg Bortner of Arizona State University. The College Program offers college level courses in cooperation with Rio Salado College [a Maricopa County, Arizona, community college] in a "distance learning" format. The students acquire college credits from Rio, which they may transfer to almost any other community college or to a university after their release from FPC. A woman whose sentence keeps her at FPC long enough may even earn one or more associate degrees.

Rio requires every incoming student to sit for a series of proficiency examinations, one of which is a math exam. The other exams are not serious obstacles for most of our students, but the math exam is another story. Many of our students do not achieve on their first attempt a score that is sufficiently high to permit them to register for a college level math course. The intent of our "math refresher course," which uses Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math as the textbooks for the course, is to get them over that hurdle.

There is no charge for the course. We provide our students with all of the supplies they need at no charge and lend them the books that Changing Hands Bookstore, an independent local bookstore in Tempe, kindly sells to us at a reduced price.

Our students greatly appreciate both Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math, which are much more than just math books: they are also great confidence builders. For many of our students, these are perhaps the only math books they have ever truly liked. Consequently, we let each student who completes the course choose one of the books to keep as her own. We wish that we could let them keep both, but our limited resources do not permit us to do so.

Sincerely yours,

Karnavalo

5-0 out of 5 stars Danica = great role model, better math teacher
Like her first book ("Math Doesn't Suck"), "Kiss My Math" is an epic win. I was eleven when I first read Danica's books, and they changed my whole perspective on math. I'm now thirteen and I love my algebra class.

"Kiss My Math" doesn't just help girls understand math, it helps them embrace it. There are real-life testimonies, quizzes, statistics, and other engaging materials in addition to the crystal-clear lessons. You will be walked through the steps of each problem, but not babied and never put down.

Danica emphasizes the importance of not dumbing yourself down and always being the best that you can. Even if you weren't born to be a math whiz, any of Danica's books are guaranteed to imnprove your outlook and your grades, and give you something else even more valuable: self-confidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fans of Saxon
We are homeschoolers and have been using Saxon Math for four years. If you get this book, you will NOT need Algebra 1/2, as this book ends with all of the skill sets needed to go into Algebra 1.We never used the solutions manual, but everything else is necessary to teach and learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars math text
I am using this book for enrichment for some students that are ready for 7th grade math while in the sixth grade. It offers enough instruction and practice to serve my needs for them well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Curriculum!!!
Difficult to begin with, as we were compensating for years of public schooling. After two or three weeks, we covered most of the basic lack of competence and she is now progressing nicely. In an ideal world, we would have begun homeschooling from the beginning and there would not have been any "catch up". I cannot imagine her being confused about any concept taught in this text. Occasionally it is tedious in its repetitiveness, but it is very, very thorough. She is in sixth grade this year, but I am confident that she will begin Saxon Math Algebra 1 next year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Student hardcover math book
Book in better than advertised condition. Arrived in the stated time frame. Delivery was USPS, a big plus since I didn't have to wait and watch for a delivery service. I recommend this seller to anyone wanting a quality textbook in near new condition at competitive pricing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Saxon is good if you've learned it from the beginning...otherwise it's too hard.
My child learned with another math curriculum and then had Saxon Math in the 7th grade. It was VERY difficult and further ahead then she had learned so far in other Pre-Algebra books. So, if you're going to do the Saxon Math books, I suggest you start with the earlier grades and progress that way naturally. The transition of trying to jump in and learn Saxon for the first time when you're a 7th grader is way too hard. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of High School Pre-Algebra Tutor book
The book arrived at the specified date, was well packaged and was not damaged in shipment. It will be used by a senior high school student in Ghana, West Africa and he has received the book - their school year just started. He is very happy with the book and believes that it will be very useful for him during his next 3 years of school. Thank you for your help as these books are needed but not available for sale in Ghana. If anything more is needed, I will know where to look for the item. Thank you again.

3-0 out of 5 stars lack of exercises (2&half stars)
I needed to provide my two sons, 4th & 5th grade, challenging math because the school is not able to facilitate any to them. This book is quite self-explanatory and my two boys could follow it fine.(Note: I am NOT trying to recommend this book for 4th & 5th graders. My sons are at least 2 years ahead of average math skills. I am trying to emphasize that the problems are so well explained that my lower school sons can follow) However, this book lacks the following: Not enough exercises;no indepth exercise or problems; lack of word problems and applicaton. It serves well in the surface level of most pre-algebra topics, but not in-depth. I would recommend another one : Prealgebra by K. Elayn Martin-Gay, which is packed with exercises, and the lessons are very self-explanatory as well; and there are answers keys to the odd questions only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hole-Free Math Skills
In his customary succinct and painless way, Richard Fisher has written a series of skill specific math workbooks. Like an efficient patch kit, each book seals any holes that might exist in your student's math skills. I had the opportunity to look over these six, streamlined, no-fluff workbooks (just the way I like them). Fractions, Geometry, Percents and Decimals, Problem Solving, Whole Numbers and Integers, and Pre-algebra Concepts are individually and precisely targeted. Each subject is given a thorough yet simple treatment (a rare combination). First, by laying a firm foundation with the basics, building precept upon precept, and finally topping off the skills we have gained with final reviews to ensure hole-free mastery. With my limited understanding of math, I was able to easily comprehend the short lessons in the Helpful Hints section with examples. I could have used a little more explanation for the more complex concepts to nudge my brain to its grasping point; still, I was able to ascertain a concept by looking at the answer and figuring out how it was arrived at (I call it creative learning). I used Pre-Algebra Concepts with companion DVD for a review of Pre-Algebra and would unquestionably have used it as my son's primary text had I discovered this series sooner (the other books in this series do not come with a companion DVD). I recommend these books and will be using them for reinforcing any weak areas that crop up in my son's math comprehension. ... Read more
