5-0 out of 5 stars the title says it all
the title says it all. it gets you ready for Algebra. if you need it, get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As far as I can see
I bought Ready for Algebra because we're homeschooling and I have trouble with math. I'm an older-than-usual mom and it's been 40 years since I had algebra, so I need help. Frankly, I got this book for myself. The cartoons, the simple explanations, and the blessings of an index and glossary are helping pave the way for me as I work alongside my daughter in math. Now I'll understand what she's asking and not have to call our mentor math mom all the time. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great help for Pre-Algebra!
Good reference.Easy format for younger students to understand.Especially the question and answer design of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars we love Dr. Math
Since my son started using BeeStar online math, he often asks questions about math problems. They are more and more challenging to me. This book came in as a big help. Its friendly question and answer format makes it very easy to use. The answers are insightful and presented in an elegant and simple manner that makes otherwise hard-to-explain concepts easy. It not only teaches the conventional math, but also gives you the context and the thoughts behind the principles. My son's math sense is improved significantly since I used this invaluable book. We love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suffering from pre-algebra anxiety? I prescribe Dr.Math
Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra contains answers to some pithy questions.

What is algebra? The answer starts out: Algebra is like arithmetic, but in algebra some of the numbers have names instead of values.

As another example, It makes no sense to me why someone would replace a number with a letter signed Carissa. The answer is in part Youre doing something a little like algebra whenever you use a pronoun. You could have written this: It makes no sense to Carissa why someone would replace a number with a letter

Or how about: An algebraic expression is like a word or phrase, and an equation is like a sentence.

A successful textbook is easy to TEACH from because it has lots of exercises, and plenty of extra padding in case there isnt quite enough useful content to fill the entire semester.Reading a successful textbook is often like eating sawdust. In contrast, Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra is easy to LEARN from. It is not necessary to read it cover to cover. Instead, I heartily recommend that you keep this book in your medicine cabinet, secure in the knowledge that if your pre-teen comes home with a questions about pre-algebra, you wont be left with a splitting headache. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Math Wizard
This is very good for the kids, especially during summer breaks. It keeps them on check, so they don't forget what they learned from school.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way too many errors
I bought this workbook for my son to use during the summer to brush up on his skills prior to staring algebra.Although it is laid out in an easy to use format, the errors in the answer key are numerous. There are 4 incorrect answers in the first 6 pages alone. To me, that is unacceptable. If you do purchase it, know that you can not trust the answer key.

3-0 out of 5 stars Typos Galore - not for the faint of heart
I picked this title up to brush up my pre-algebra skills for a college placement test and it went really fast but I gave it a low rating because the typos in this book are incredible - I can't believe an average level proof reader didn't catch the mistakes in the answers - if I were more faint of heart, I would be totally confused. The mistakes are needless - answer 9 instead of 19, n being referenced in an equation that only involved x, just silly stuff. I would not recommend this if your math skills are not pretty fresh or your confidence level strong enough so that you know the answer you got is right and the answer key has a typo almost every other page.
All in all, even with those misgivings, I was pretty impressed that my review went that quickly - knocked off the book in about 5 days of casual test reviews while watching tv. Much credit must be given to the author's simplicity of teaching methodology - putting a simple rule out there, show how it works, then ask the reader to work on several (average 17) problems on that rule. THen check yourself on the answer key and move on. The last time I did math was 40 years ago but it came back lickity split. Though I still have no clue why we needed to know all that stuff but I guess I didnt' go into a science profession but my husband who did, feels the same way. But like a good Jeopardy program, this book can be taken lightly for a quick refresher, warts and all, just to test yourself and get some understanding of where you are on pre-algebra. It doesn't hurt to stay one step ahead of my kid to keep him impressed. And its never too late to go back to college to pursue an in-demand as opposed to esoteric profession of starry eyed youth. Money pays the bills and boring but practical, in demand careers should never be underestimated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refining Math Skills
This book is a great help.I used it during the summer months for my son to do some reviews and also to prepare him for the next level for his future math class. This book provided both.It provides an explanation for each topic along with examples that make it quite simply;in addition, it provides an answer sheet to allow one to verify their answers. I know that this book has provided a basis for my son to take on some of the challenges for his new year in 7th grade math. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to improve in their algebra math skills

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I get it!
You know what it's like when someone is giving you directions to a destination and you're just not gettin' it? Then suddenly, something in what they say or how they say it makes it click? You get it! The chorus sings and the sun rises on your horizon. Apply this scenario to teaching and learning from Richard W. Fisher's Mastering Essential Math Skills: Pre-Algebra Concepts. Such is the experience my son and I have had as we've made our way through this 72-page math workbook. We get it! Concisely explained lessons, only 10 problems to work, plus 6 review problems--to retain what we've learned--and one word problem, are only a few of the compelling reasons I recommend Mastering Essential Math Skills. We spent 6 months trekking through a popular Pre-Algebra book yet we didn't learn as much, as quickly, or easily as in just 2 months of using Mastering Essential Math Skills. My son actually looks forward to his math lessons now (this is nothing short of miraculous). I purchased the very affordable DVD set and my 13-year-old son is absolutely drawn to Mr. Fisher's friendly, easy-going, and encouraging manner. "20 minutes a day to success" is a subtitle on the cover; it's not just an eye-catching phrase...okay it is...but for those of us beleaguered by paying $100 or more for 300 page math texts consisting of 50+ problems to work--it's a welcome fact. 72 pages in all--that's it. When a teacher presents concepts as effectively as Richard Fisher does--that's all you need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is REALLY AWESOME (applying grad student)
This book is really good. I plan on taking the GRE in the fall, so I wanted to do a complete review, and not just learn the "strategies" that will help me be a great test taker. I wanted to review my background in math and verbal and I'm working my way from Basic Math through Calculus & Trig with these books.

I disagree with the 1star post. I think this book is GREAT for someone who needs a complete refresher, and it DOES in fact define what an "integer" is. I think it's great. I'm not paid to say this, I'm not the author, or the author's relative, or anything like that...I always wonder if some of the poor reviews come from competitive authors who want you to buy their book instead.

But anyway, I'm 1/2 way through this book. I love how they give REAL LIFE EXAMPLES to make the problems more readily understandable. I can't wait to finish this book and go on to "pre algebra" then "Algebra." I actually came online to see if Cliffnotes makes comparable books that could help me brush up on principles for the verbal section of the GRE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
My wife is going back to College after a big break from schooling and this book has been an incredible review of everything she could possibly want to know about basic match and pre-algebra.She's gone through it several times to brush up on her math skills and she might even be able to skip one of the more basic math classes because of this book, which means this book has paid for itself many times over.It has a pretest that you take and then once you correct the pretest, each problem has a page number by it so that any problems you miss can be researched and reviewed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boy, was duped by reviews
If it wouldn't cost me money to send this back, I would. This book is not for anyone who is actually trying to re-learn math after a long layoff. From the get-go the authors throw math terms into the mix with minimal explanation. In fact, there are very few explanations of anything throughout and if you want to learn they whys and wherefores you won't get it here.

Math phobics be warned, you won't get past the first few pages without hyperventilating.

I mean, come on, what the heck is an integer and why do I need to know this term? Maybe I'm a dumdum, but I have not studied math since the 1960s and I wasn't good at it back then. I really want to learn but when I read through this I was more than confused, I was discouraged.

Modern tutorials should have better ways to teach math than this. [...] Obviously, the reviews I counted on for objective information were written by people who are either math teachers and therefore clueless as to what it's like to be an adult sans math skills, friends of the authors, or simply a whole lot smarter than I am.

This book has a lot of problems to play with if all you want to do is try out your testing skills, and I should have known it wouldn't be much use to me when I saw the many, many pages of sample problems and very few pages of actual text that tells you what the heck is going on. I felt like I was back in the classroom with my ninth grade math teacher. I didn't understand a word she said then, either.

I also bought "The Algebra Survival Guide" and I can tell it's a much more useable tutorial geared toward actually teaching the subject. Rappaport even jokes about how math language is "gibberish" and talks about the meanings behind the math lexicon. It's too bad the authors of BM&PA didn't think to make their book more accessible to folks like me who really want to overcome math anxiety and learn. If you want my copy, send me the money for shipping and you can have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, I'm understanding math!
This book is great, because I for one am horrible at any math & for the first time after practicing and studying from this book, I was able to pass a test. The explanations are to the point and very understandable & the method which you learn makes complete sense. They break it down for you, like you are suppose to see it. Love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had This Book 40 years ago
I found this book to be a wonderful help. I wish I had this book 40 years ago when I was having a rough time in school. This book is GREAT for a refresher and actually for learning if you have never had a good math foundation. ... Read more
