5-0 out of 5 stars A Reader
It's a very informative book.I like to reference it whenever I can to remind me of all the things to avoid.I have an older version of this book and this updated version really opened my eyes to alternative methods to helping me with my allergies.Although some of their methods may be unconventional to some, at least they give you all the options that are available to allergy suffers like me.The medicine that doctors give you only treat the symptoms they don't help you in the long run. This book reaches beyond the medical field into alternative methods that many people don't think about.
I didn't realize that corn was in so many things. It's in more items than wheat is.Anyone with wheat allergies know that it's hard to avoid.Corn is even harder to avoid, it's in almost every processed food item. This book lists all the items to look out for which contain corn, wheat, soy, ect. It's a must read for anyone wanting to learn more about allergies and what to expect.

1-0 out of 5 stars The system wouldn't allow me to give it zero stars...
I've had a difficult case of rhinitis lately. I read much of this book hoping to find helpful information. I'm sure that some of what's in this large volume is useful, but much of the diagnoses and treatment recommendations have little or no support in the medical or scientific community. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity/Environmental Illness is heavily promoted as a cause of sickness, although the AMA and other medical associations don't recognize any such condition. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology has a nice position statement about the subject on its website, and a convincing refutation of the theory can be found in a 1996 article by Michael Fumento in Reason Magazine (Reasononline).

The book seems as much a polemic against industrial society and modern living as it is a medical self-help book.

The authors work in a practice together, or at least did at the time the book was written. One of them is apparently a physician, but she doesn't refer to herself as an allergist.

If you like to be frightened and prefer the opinions of some alternative therapists to those of the medical community, then buy this book. But be prepared to position the headboard of your bed to the north so as to take advantage of the electromagnetic polarity of the earth, to remove all electrical appliances from your bedroom, and to detoxify yourself of pollutants through the administration of coffee enemas. Yes these are among the many suggestions in the book. The authors don't entirely tell you to have the amalgam fillings removed from your head; they at least cite the consensus opinion that the extent of mercury exposure is harmless. But they give equal time to the opinions of the small minority who claim that such fillings are toxic.

Allergies adversely affect the quality of life for many people. Sufferers want to understand the causes of their symptoms and how to avoid them. In my opinion, they would be better served elsewhere.

Product Description
The American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH) is the oldest medical organization in the United States, founded three years before the American Medical Association. The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for Parents is the first AIH publication that offers another option for parents who are reluctant to participate in the widespread extreme measures of conventional medicine such as stimulants, antidepressants, and overuse of antibiotics. Step-by-step Edward Shalts, a medical doctor who practices homeopathic medicine, explains what homeopathy is and how it works. He presents a user-friendly overview of acute and chronic issues and shows how parents can deal with them, either on their own for some problems, or in many cases, with a qualified practitioner. This important resource explains the principles of homeopathy, the nature of remedies, and the appropriate time to use homeopathy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars there are better books out there
I really wanted to like this book as it got good reviews. Being a parent with above average intelligence, I figured I could really use this book. I was wrong. The author does give a very good history of homeopathy, but otherwise the book is disorganized, hard to follow and hard to use. I wanted a guide to help a novice (me)navigate the homeopathy offerings at wholefoods - this was not the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars not much of a self-help book
I'm glad I got this from the library before buying it. This has very little self-help in it. There are other books with more complete and more easily searched self-help sections.
This book might be good if you need to be convinced about the usefulness and benefits of homeopathy for your family, but I'm past that point and got very annoyed at being cautioned on about every other page that I need to work with a trained homeopath and could not possibly do or comprehend more than simple acute care by myself. It was written on behalf of the American Institute of Homeopathy so maybe that explains something. He also cautions ominously against polypharmacy, but never gave any reason or proof why this should be so bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT GUIDE
I have been using homeopathic remedies for some time, but this book opens up my understanding more on why, how much, what, and when. I have had phenomenal success using homeopathic remedies and would advise everyone interested in keeping dangerous drugs out of their bodies or those of their family's should at least read up on the subject, and this is one of the books to start with!

I am always surprised when people say to me "that stuff is quackery, or you've been conned", yet they will go to their doctor and get a drug with deadly side-effects and take it! If only they knew that not all the prescriptions doctors give out have been tested - which is why a doctor will say to them "we'll try this one and if it doesn't work, we'll try something else!" And because it is a doctor who says it, people are gullible to believe that drug will not hurt them!

Get the book, READ IT, and then ask yourself is it worth a try? You can't hurt yourself with it, and it won't cost a fortune to buy it!

1-0 out of 5 stars The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for partents.
I was looking (still haven't found) a book about homeopathic remedies, strengths and dosages. I didn't find it in this book, most of the book explained how it is better to live healthy than to take medicines.

5-0 out of 5 stars I sell homeopathic products
I recently opened a 'healing products' store in an Interstate Super Flea Market mall, and retail a branded homeopathic line of remedies. Not being a doctor, but making referrals to homeopathic professionals, this book was exactly what I needed torelate homeopathic remedies to visitors to my new store and provide them with simple comprehensive understandable information useful for adults and children, alike.

I believe the book to be a good bridge between patient and professional, alike, to understand specifics and the proper use of these wonderful medications anytime one is visiting or calling a professional practitioner.

I highly recomend it to any lay person, like myself, who is interested in learning about homeopathics with or without the help of a homepathics professional. For anyone with serious illiness, especially chronic sufferers of pain and acute disease, I highly recommend that one should always work with a trusted professional, and I strongly recommend browsing this book prior to selecting a homeopathic professional, and keeping it handy throughout any conversations and use of prescribed remedies.

After reading the book and answering a few customer questions today, I am so pleased that I am ordering additional copies from Amazon.com to make the book immediately available to my own customers who request it. ... Read more

If allergies make you wheeze, sneeze, drip, itch, puff, ordroop, or if asthma makes you feel like an elephant is standing onyour chest, you'll want to read Allergies and Asthma forDummies. Author William Berger, M.D., M.B.A., knows his stuff. Heis a practicing allergist, a member of the task force that developednational guidelines for treating allergic diseases, and a former staffallergist for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team.

You get much more thanthe basics here. You learn how to prevent and treat the common typesof allergies, with extensive information on hay fever and skin rashes, and short but helpful sections on allergic reactions to food, drugs, and insects. The asthma section is especially comprehensive, withinstructions for recognizing and managing asthma triggers, monitoringair flow, selecting the best medications for both short-term andlong-term relief, and special considerations for pregnant women andchildren. The book covers both self-help and pharmacological treatmentmethods in depth, but not alternative treatments.

One of the mosthelpful chapters is "Relieving Your Rhinitis," which will appealespecially to the 45 million Americans who suffer from hay fever.Allergic rhinitis (the medical term) is not a fever and is caused notby hay, but rather by airborne pollen from grasses, trees, andweeds. The commonly used over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays may not be your best choice, saysBerger. He describes the uses and advantages of recommendedprescription drugs, and advises a medical evaluation to choose theright one for you.

The book's style, though still easy tounderstand, is not as casual or humorous as the typical ForDummies book. This may be because Berger is more intent onpacking a bundle of helpful medical information into the book thanbeing witty. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have allergies, you need this book!
I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!

5-0 out of 5 stars Allergy &Candida Cooking Made Easy
This is an excellent book and I have been using it during my cleansing
of all foods but veggies and proteins for the past month. I have never
felt starved which is amazing. Along with this way of well-being eating, and supplements, I have not felt lethargy, joint pain and bloatedness for the past three weeks. This is a very helpful book for finding out how food affects our energy and pain symptoms. Along with eating healthy comes a lot of cooking though!! After feeling so good, I now prefer to give up some of my busy life to devote to my health and well-being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Allergy and Candida Cookbook and much more
I would recommend Allergy and Candida Cooking Made Easy to anyone who suffers with food allergies and or candida. This book is so much more than just a cookbook, there's a lot of helpful information that would benefit anyone with these kinds of health issues. I didn't know anything about rotation dieting, this book not only helps set up that kind of food regimen but it has the weekly shopping list to go by as well. I'm sold on this book and highly recommend it to others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information Overall/Other Good References
This book was useful for a number of things - easy cooking directions, lots of recipes, and information on how to set up a rotational diet.Additionally it includes basic instruction for those of us (me!) who don'tcook.

It did seem to introduce sugar a bit soon to the diet as comparedto other books and it did not incorporate other good nutritional theory asa base (such as food combining, acid/akaline theory, blood type theory,etc.).I used much of the information in this book, but modified it toincorporate things that work for me, such as not combining carbs andprotein in one meal, limiting certain foods like tomatoes, using vegetableglycerin for a sweetener, and etc.

Other very good references are TheBody Ecology Diet (Gates), the Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook (Martin),The Candida Control Cookbook by Burton, and The Cure for All Diseases (Dr.Clark).

A tip:Go slow & don't overwhelm yourself with all this newinformation at one time! It's a big change to go from limited time in akitchen to spending most of your free time cooking.I've found it helps tocut out as many social obligations as you can while you rebuild your immunesystem and it really helps to pray for the strength to stick with thechanges you want to make!

I recently found by default that I am suffering from Candida Overgrowth and set out to find all the information on it that I could.I found a lot of books that told me what I needed to do and eat; however, I had troublewith finding any that had recipes of the kinds of meals or foods that Ilike to eat. Then I found this cookbook! It explained about Candida andgave a list of possible symptoms, and then it gave a list of what a Candidasufferer should and should not eat, and gave some information on some ofthe ingredients that it uses in the recipes. It explained the connectionbetween Allergies and Candida, as well.I hadn't really made theconnection.I love this cookbook. Now, I can watch what ingredients gointo the meals that I eat and I can really enjoy eating them (instead ofchoking them down) when they have been prepared!I waste less food andfewer ingredients! It contains recipes that are free of Sugar, Yeast,Wheat, Corn, Dairy and Egg. Other books that I have really gotten gooduse out of are "The Body Ecology Diet", "Allergies andCandida with the Physicist's Rapid Solution", and "CompleteCandida Yeast Guidebook"."Allergy and Candida Cooking MadeEasy" has a wonderful baked chicken recipe that I thought waswonderful!"Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook" has a Guacamolerecipe that is absolutely delicious! Some people really have to watch what they eat because they have what are called food allergies.Eating certain things can make them very sick and even kill them in extreme circumstances. In True Books there are always two statements in the front of the book. One of them is true, the other is false. You have to be a sharp cookie and read the entire book to find out the truth! Many children are aware of food allergies these days. Some kids are very allergic to things like peanuts.Do you have a school that is "nut free?"Of course we don't count the class clown here!Seriously, about "two million U.S. schoolchildren are allergic to at least one food."

Allergic reactions are no fun.In this book you can see pictures of children who have eaten something they are allergic to and it is not a pretty sight. There are other allergies besides food allergies.Perhaps you or someone you know has hay fever or is allergic to "dust, pollen, pets" or things like mold. This book talks about what allergies are and how our bodies react to them. Also discussed are government requirements for properly labeling foods, how doctors can detect what someone may be allergic to and how you can stay safe and still live happily and comfortably.

This is a very important book that should be in every school library, introduced and read in every classroom. The number of children who have severe allergies to an assortment of food products is on the rise. Our ill-informed public can be extremely harmful in certain circumstances. This book has colorful photographs, informative sidebars, a time line, brief allergy statistics, important words, an index and additional recommended book, organization and web sites.Did you know that "eight foods cause 90 percent of all food allergies?"You'll have to read this book to find out what they are! ... Product Description
Discovering one of her sons had a life-threatening allergy to nuts and eggs catapulted Alice Sherwood into the bewildering world of "food allergies." How can you make a birthday cake without flour? What happens to family meals when packaged foods, which may contain traces of nuts, along with pasta, bread, and peanut butter become forbidden? Suddenly it became crucial to find alternatives, but most "cooking without" recipes lacked taste or contained unfamiliar ingredients that were hard to find. So Alice, armed with a lifelong love of food, got to work in the kitchen and devised her own recipes.

The Allergy-Free Cookbook is unique. There are no dismal, "special diet" versions of recipes, which don't work. Instead there are dishes from around the world that center on ingredients other than eggs, dairy, gluten, and nuts. Throughout, Alice gives several variations for each recipe. So a nut-free cake that uses butter, for example, may be adapted for the dairy-free crowd by using soy spread.

The Allergy-Free Cookbook has more than 100 recipes for meals, snacks, and lunchboxes as well as for suppers and birthday parties. All the crowd-pleasing favorites are here. By experimenting with polenta and potato flour, for example, Alice has invented a gluten-free crunchy shortcrust pastry that's superb in apple tarts, while rice, potato, and tapioca flours combine to form a dough that works a treat for French bread. With the Allergy-Free Cookbook, everyone's invited to dinner! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I love this cookbook! It is very simple to "read" and follow/understand the recipes.I had started to run out of ideas of meals to make that had some variety in them as well as being milk free for my son, but this cookbook has given me lots of new ideas. It is also so nice that it lists what the recipe initially is made without, and also gives suggestions to eliminate/substitute other allergens that may be in it.It has saved dinner at our house from the same dozen or so things that I was stuck in a rut making.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not allergy free
I am on an elimination diet (I can't eat any of the top 8 allergens, plus corn, beans and seeds) and was looking for recipes that would provide healthy alternatives to the foods I was used to. Most of these recipes are not allergy free, and I couldn't find one single recipe that truly eliminated all the top allergens.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Frequent Entertainers
Various members of my family have different allergies. Some are allergic to eggs, others gluten, still others nuts. What's nice about this cookbook is that I can adjust my recipes to fit whoever is coming to dinner without having to buy three different cookbooks.
While I agree that most of the recipes can only eliminate a few allergens at a time, it's still a money saver for someone in my position (not allergic to anything myself, but catering to my visitors' needs). I recommend this for anyone who wants to host dinner parties for people with special dietary needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flexible = Fantastic!
Lately I've been on a fairly peculiar diet in order to treat several digestive problems (gastroparesis, acid reflux, and a few food intolerances). These dietary restrictions force me to cook at home more than I used to, which in turn has sent me in search of cookbooks tailored to my needs. Most of the books I've looked at have fallen into one of three categories: gluten-free, vegan, or allergen-free. Unfortunately, none of these categories is ideal for me, as gluten-free cookbooks tend to call for cow's milk products and ignore spelt flour (an unusually substitution-friendly exception being The Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy: Wheat-Free and Gluten-Free with Less Fuss and Less Fat), vegan cookbooks omit eggs and typically call for wheat, and allergen-free cookbooks omit eggs and soy, both of which are staples of my diet. Thankfully, Alice Sherwood's Allergy-Free Cookbook has a flexible recipe format that puts it in a category all its own.

Other reviewers have complained that Sherwood's cookbook is not what it claims to be. Those complaints are not entirely unwarranted, since Sherwood's recipes do call for some of the most common allergens, unlike (for example) Enjoy Life's Cookies for Everyone!: 150 Delicious Gluten-Free Treats that are Safe for Most Anyone with Food Allergies, Intolerances, and Sensitivities. On the other hand, the Allergy-Free Cookbook is a godsend for someone like me, who needs to omit only a couple of the most common allergens (cow's milk and wheat) and actively desires to include others (eggs and soy). I imagine the format of this book would also be extremely helpful for households in which one person is allergic to nuts and dairy and another to nuts alone, for example, because it makes it relatively easy to prepare two versions of the same tasty dish simultaneously.

In short, if you are considering buying The Allergy-Free Cookbook, have a look at the sample pages first (the book is beautifully printed and laid out, as is typical of Dorling-Kindersley!) and figure out whether the flexible recipe format will meet your needs or not. As far as I know, this format is unique, and while it won't work for everyone, I think a certain subset of people on special diets will be absolutely delighted with it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very excited about the format of this cookbook as I have multiple food sensitivities. The disappointing part is the fact that while one sensitivity is omitted for a recipe if you have multiple foods to eliminate it is sometimes impossible to make the substitutions the book calls for. The recipes are also somewhat complicated and do not use ingredients the average cook would have on hand. This cookbook would be good for someone who is a good cook with maybe only one food allergy. ... Read more

(Gay / Dark Fantasy / Werewolf / Shapeshifter / BDSM / Romantic Comedy / Suspense / Thriller / Series) What's a shapeshifter to do when the man he desperately wants is allergic to him? Raymond Marvels never imagines his call to the IT department at his graphics design job would result in his meeting Lou Canis, the most gorgeous man he's ever seen. There's one small problem, though--Ray is allergic to Lou. Yet his allergy is only one of the weird things going on between them. Lou, a werewolf, isn't sure how to fix the situation, because it seems his would-be lover's allergy is to Lou's human form and not his canine one. Lou decides to tell Ray his deep dark secret, which has unexpected results when Ray embraces both sides of Lou. Yet after a witch doctor gives Ray some medicine to solve his problem, Ray and Lou discover they must also face a dangerous conspiracy evolving around them... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun addition to the gay shapeshifter genre
Allergies is a fun and interesting tale about a human who falls in love with a werewolf. Well, a "lycan", to be exact.

Ray works in web and graphics design for a large company. When his computer is acting up, a gorgeous technician from the IT department named Lou shows up to fix it, and they're immediately smitten with each other. The only problem is that Ray seems to be allergic to something about Lou.

Lou is a werewolf and comes from a large pack. His mother, who he states is evil (though she's really not), named all of her children dog's names.... Spot, Rover, Patches, etc. Most of the family work in their family-owned pub, with a few of them working the outside. Lou is hooked on Ray, and even visits him in wolf form. Interesting, Ray isn't allergic to him in this form. Lou's family warns Lou to be careful with Ray, even though they really like him. Most humans don't take well to the knowledge that werewolves exist.

T. A. Chase added his own twists on the romance werewolf genre with this new book. In this world, there are Preters, which are any beings who aren't human. They're broken down into four different groups, werewolves being one. Being a lycan, Lou can shift fully into a wolf form and back again, no half-man/half-wolf type thing. The concept of "mates" (or "soulmates") is brought up, which is a common theme in many other werewolf romances. Here, the pack acknowledges that many other packs believe in mates, though this pack does not. Well, most of them. In any case, it's not like in other authors' books where mates recognize each other immediately and feel deep physical and emotional attraction just from proximity to their mate. It's more subtle here.

The characters are well-developed, and the story is swift and paced very well. The main plot thread is the relationship between Ray and Lou, but another plot line is present that isn't resolved... that of hunters seeking out the werewolves to kill them. This implies there will be more in the series. I enjoyed it enough to hope that there will be.

While I was at first unhappy with the fact that all of the siblings' names were dog names, it grew on me quickly as it was apparent it's a quirk to this particular family, with other shifters being much more normal. The characters are all unique, and even secondary characters are developed nicely. T. A. Chase is a very good writer, and it shows here with a finely-crafted book that will (hopefully) lead to many more with these characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Purchase
I was very please with my purchase and it arrived in a very timely manner. Thank You.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this book.
Raymond Marvels has computer problems, calls the IT department.Lou Caniscomes in to fix it.Sparks fly, and they quickly find themselves on their way to a HEA, only one small problemLou has to figure out a way to tell Ray he's a wolf and Ray is apparently allergic to him, not as a wolf, but his human form.

I loved this book so much more than I did "Nick of Time" and I'm not sure why...other than the blaringly obvious sin I made by reading them out of order. But absolutely loved reading Ray and Lou's story and Lou's somewhat crazy family and their twisted sense of humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars sniffles
Its a good story, Cute, funny. Lots of passion. I will read more of TA Chase's work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a well written book
If your expecting another Without Reservation, then your dead wrong. No offense personally to this author, but dialog and flow of this book just grated on me. It was like watching a car crash slowly, with no way out. I did indeed finish the book... and it never got better, in fact it tended to get worse.I felt the changes in personality of ray, from blindingly accepting, to deathly afraid, to mindlessly accepting again was just unrealistic. The character names were a joke, and yes I can take some sarcasm in a name like Rover, but to have six siblings and to all have them named outrageous names goes a little too far. It would have done better to go with more obscure references. All in all I would not recommend this book, unless to maybe a middle school child, or someone who doesn't appreciate literature.

Side note for the author, I do think it is a valiant first attempt. I have some of the same personal writing habits as I have seen in your book, but I have spent months and months going over and rewriting things to sound more adult and well thought out. Please take editing more seriously in your next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
My son has complicated, chronic health issues which greatly restrict what he can and can not eat. This cookbook, which we bought after maxing out our renewals of our local library's copy, has given us several recipes that we have adapted to his diet. And the whole family enjoys the result!

This was a huge help to us.We'd love to make some contributions if another edition were to ever come out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
Got this because my husband and daughter both have milk allergy and wheat allergy. This is great to search by food you want to eliminate and easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars By far the best
I have read many allergy cookbooks in the past. This is the easiest and best one I have found. It uses ingredients I have actually heard of.I gave my copy to a friend and found I couldn't live without it, so I bought another one!

4-0 out of 5 stars handy reference
This was one of the first allergy cookbooks that we bought when we found we were faced with mutliple severe food allergies.

Long on baked goods - short on meals, but still a handy reference, and uses easily accessible ingredients. No pink elephants on the ingredient list. All sorts of cookies, cakes, muffins, bars, desserts, pancakes etc.

Easy to read and easy to make recipes.

We have tried many recipes from this one. My daughter's favorite dessert is the swirl cake that we make based on the recipe of this book. That is enough of a positive review for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks variety
I was looking for a real cookbook with a VARIETY of ideas including NEW meal ideas. The back of the book states "A full range of menu ideas . . ."Not true.Of the 300 recipes in the book, about 250 are for cookies, cakes, pies, sweet breads, muffins and other dessert type items. There are only 50 recipes in the "Main Meals" chapter and it looks like they were stretching to fill the chapter.About 10 of the recipes in "Main Meals" are made of potatoes such as "Potato Fans": slice a potato, sprinkle with salt and bake. Wow. I can barely contain myself.Four of the recipes were for more breads like corn bread and then the all-to-creative Chicken & Rice and Pizza --which is what I'm trying to get away from. I wanted was some NEW creative ideas for meals or side dishes. I will keep looking for a better book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An OK book
The book is ok but what you really want to know is how to PREVENT the allergies in the first place! The author doesn't have a clue.

Food allergies have become a major problem especially among children. Unless you work with children, you may not be aware of the extent of the problem. In the last 5 years there has been an "epidemic" of food allergies among children. It started at the same time the recommended number of vaccinations was substantially increased. It could be a coincidence or not. Vaccines are not regulated the same as food. Manufacturers can have "secret ingredients" not revealed on the package insert. This is protected by trade law. If you enjoy reading patents, you can find out many of the various ingredients used in the culture media and adjuvants. Many, many foods are listed. Peanut oil, sesame oil, wheat germ oil, soy oil, corn oil, walnut oil, almond oil are among the ingredients listed. A small amount of protein from these foods cannot be eliminated from the vaccine. It could be causing the food allergy epidemic. At the very least, physicians cannot advise their allergic patients very wisely if they don't know what is in the vaccine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Confusing science mixed with some practical advice
This really is no book for idiots. Some key sections are not well organized and the science is badly presented throughout. For example, to explain how food allergies work the author leaps straight into an unnecessary and confusing timeline of allergy related discoveries and researchers and then moves on to an overly detailed discussion of the body's immune system. Within three paragraphs the reader is presented with irrelevant information such as where B and T lymphocytes are created in the body. Terms are introduced before being defined, background information is taken for granted, and no where is there a basic description what substances are likely to be allergens and why. The similar section in "Food Allergies and Food Intolerance" by Brostoff and Gamlin is much clearer and more complete.

The lax editing leads to some real whoppers. My favorite is "zinc is an essential trace element that must be obtained from the diet, since the body can't make enough." This is true since the body cannot produce any metals at all. Or take the sidebar on page 79, which states that "anything that goes on or into your body through any orifice can cause an allergic reaction" which would imply that a person can develop allergies to oxygen, carbon, and a host of substances your immune cells cannot possibly bind to. Brostoff and Gamlin's book provides a much more accurate and complete description of allergens and how the body responds to them.

The alternative therapies section weakens the credibility of the book as a whole. After repeatedly citing well designed research studies to discredit quack therapies in chapter 15 the author turns around and cites "anecdotal evidence" to recommend alternative therapies in chapters 16 through 18. He goes so far as to repeat the claim that homeopathic solutions "continue to hold a trace memory or essence of the original substance" after being highly diluted without even hinting that this effect can't be explained by any known laws of chemistry or physics. This section of the book is useless for determining which alternative therapies may be helpful and which are wastes of time and money.

The central section of the book contains practical advice for dealing with food allergies and all of this information is useful. But I'm sure any good book on food allergy would include similar information along with a clearer background section and more rigor in discussing alternative therapies. ... Read more

If you have a child with several food allergies (like me) and are looking for a good cookbook, this is it!
There are a lot of photos with step-by-step instructions and everything is explained very well in the first of the book. All the recipes are so easy and taste so good.I'm very happy with it.Everything I have made has been really good.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars User friendly andversatile (good recipes, food allergies or not)
One of the biggest challenges to cooking allergen-free is learning the substitutions for everyday foods that the average cook takes for granted and how to use them properly. This book is a wonderful educational tool and a must have for those just beginning this journey. However, this book isn't just a bunch of obscure ingredients thrown together. Many of the recipes are common ingredients in well thought out, home style dishes for the family. The recipes are easy to follow and there are tons of pictures.I bought this book because my nephew has severe food allergies, and I wanted to be knowledgeable and able to cook for him.Even so, I find myself cooking many of the recipes at home for me and my husband because they are just plain good. This is an A+ book for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this cook book!
This has got to be the best allergy free cook books I have found. The recipes are full of flavor, quick and easy. My Child can now have cake, cookies, and more thanks to this book.
