5-0 out of 5 stars Why review in 2007?
Simple! These almanacs contain so much more information than just the moon/astrological infor for that year. It's packed full of articles for people of many Pagan traditions to enjoy. You also get a taste of many different Llewellyn authors so you can decide who you'd like to read and who you'd rather skip. I keep all of these, and know I always will!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't impressed
Was pretty dissapointed in this book, kind of a waste of money IMO, I would not buy it again, nor will I when the new issue comes out.Wasn't anything there that I could not either get from my other books, or from the web for that matter.

I personally think it is a waste of MY money anyhow. It has some info in it, but nothing like what I expected or wanted. And just not enough information for daily life as a pagan either..
~Blessings~

3-0 out of 5 stars Neat read
This was my first year buying this almanac. It wasn't bad but I guess I really enjoy The Witche's Almanac much more than this for it's ease to use. I use my almanac for getting ready to do spells and rituals and even planting and cleaning the house in a magical manner and this book is just not easy for me to pick up and get the info I need for that. But I did find all the articles in there rather interesting and fun to read. So that made it worth the purchase. I would like to see more and better info for teens than just the same basic stuff that is in there. As a mother of a teen witch this just didn't cut the mustard with either of us. The parenting articles lacked to. This will be my summer don't have anything to read in the yard book for sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of different info!
I haven't yet finished all of the articles but this is full of many different articles that are helpful for anybody at any level! Many different authors and collaborators make this book a very well rounded source of info.If you are looking for when the next Full moon is going to come, this book will tell ya.If you want to know a little more about herbs, this book as an article about some.Interested in Green Man Tarot, there is an article about that.So much info I can't remember all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
Llewellyn's 2002 Magical Almanac is another great reference book for that special Witch.Daily correspondences for the magical worker, including moon phases and quarters, colors, moons signs and suggested incense on the calendar part of the book. Many interesting articles including those written by Edain McCoy, Dr. Leo Martello, Ann Moura, Raven Grimassi, and others referencing magic in all its various shapes and forms as well as the different seasons of the year. One that caught my eye, "Owl Medicine" by Marguerite Elsbeth, contains many Owl facts and myths.Again, this is chock full of interesting reading, well worth the price as a birthday gift or a Yule gift for yourselfor for others as well. ... Product Description
One of the preeminent novelists of our time, Maureen Howard dazzles us with a love story of radiant intelligence and delicious wit. The exhilarating flights and emotional depths of Howard's storytelling balance the fates of two young lovers in New York: Artie, a bastard, perhaps "begot in the mud of Woodstock," now a boyish computer wizard; and Louise, a hot new painter out of the Midwest, seriously committed to her art. Their romance, seemingly shattered on the eve of the millennium, is played out against the tale of two old lovers lost to each other for a half century. As these two couples search through the cultural flotsam and jetsam for love and happiness, Howard spins a superb novel of ideas and transforms, as only she can, the dear Old Farmer's Almanac into a bright book of life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A novel that requires time and thought
Maureen Howard's "A Lover's Almanac" is not an easy, pre-packaged, "pop-culture" read.Although the base of this story is a simple love story:boy loves girl, boy gets drunk and proposes marriage, girl gets [angry] and dumps boyfriend, and finally they reunite. This, however, is not what is important about Howards narrative.Whats amazing here is the claims she makes about the characters ties to history -- the importance of history in allowing live as they should. If you're a reader who demands an author of high intellect and wit Maureen Howard is for you.Hopefully, she will one day gain the recognition she deserves

2-0 out of 5 stars Fancy digressions but no core
The book promises to be right up my alley. It's about lost love, it's set among New York artsy Yuppies, and its narrative is a formal experiment.A broken couple's story, beginning the morning of the new millenium, moves freely in time and point of view, broken by a true almanac of famous dates, to chart as well a parallel love of the man's grandfather regained after decades.Only we never get any clearer sense of what drove any of them together in the first place, apart, or back together. The prose is blandly elegaic, and the digressions, which could have been copied verbatim from an encyclopedia, never convinced me that the events are somehow paradigmatic of history or, conversely, that the historical anecdotes and Y2K shed any light on the couple. So ambitious but forced and numbing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful
It is shocking to come across a writer so wonderful and yet so unknown to most readers. This is surely one of the great books of the past 25 years. There are times, when attempting to describe a book, that words absolutelyfail in relaying the complex beauty of the work. The prose is perfect, inventive, expansive, brilliant. It restores a sense of time to ourcontemporary age that so likes to imagine itself cut adrift. If Howard hada million readers, the world would be a better place. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first two, but a worthy book
The People's Almanacs were incredibly important to me growing up. My parents had the first two almanacs, and through them I learned about everything from historical events to inventions, religion to sex, movie trivia to more about sports than I ever actually cared about. The hundreds upon hundreds of pages of information packed into each book ended up being read and re-read numerous times over the years, and I still have the original copies in my home today.

So I was excited to find out there was a third volume out there. I'm rather sad to say that this one wasn't quite as good as the other two. It wasn't as long, and it seemed as though the editors were rather stretching for content this time around.

Still, I found it to be a very informative read. I particularly liked the stories of real-life castaways and how they survived, bios of famous gangsters, and the descriptions of unusual collections. The articles came across as well-researched (as always) and covered a variety of aspects of human existence. This third almanac was true to the format, too, with a nice array of illustrations to perk up the text a bit.

Overall, while I didn't like this one as much as the first two, the third People's Almanac is definitely staying on the shelf with the other two. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Window Into the Past!
Though expensive, this volume, from the "Facts on File Library of America History" series, provides information on all aspects of life in Revolutionary America between 1763 and 1800 including Native-American Life; the Economy; Population Statistics; Diet and Health; Religion; Government; The States and Territories; The Cities, and much, much more.

The chapter on "Diet and Health" reveals, for example, that Americans enjoyed an exceptionally high level of nutrition in the late 18th Century, surpassing their British counterparts and most of the world. By the Revolution, adult American males had reached an average height of five feet, eight inches, a tallness not reached by their average English counterparts until 1900. Americans had thus already reached their modern stature and were as tall as members of the U.S. military serving in World War II!

And the chapter on "Military Affairs" (under "Government") reveals that America's fight for independence, lasting from 1775 to 1783, was a brutal affair that literally decimated the 220,000 individuals who served in the Continental Army, Navy and militia. During the Revolutionary War, the American colonies suffered a relative casualty rate some four times higher than the United States suffered in World War II.

This tremendously useful and interesting volume provides a wealth of information on every aspect of life in the American colonies as they struggled for independence. It should be on the reference shelve of every middle and high school library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for sports.
Anyone who loves sports will appreciate this book. Whether you're arguing with your buddies over a particular record or looking for good bathroom material, this is the book to have. The book is loaded with just about every record and statistic and is a great sports reference.

My 13 year-old son loves baseball and reads this book all the time. We have fun quizzing each other on baseball facts and he's getting tougher to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for the Fan in You
I received this book as a present due to my love of sports and my every growing thirst for knowledge. I am an avid sports fan who can get into an hour long conversation on why Eli Manning could out duel Brett Farve and Tony Romo any day, but I am always looking for stats to back up my arguments and here they are. In this book I can find almost anything. Want to know who won the 1954 world series, well that would be the New York Giants in a four game sweep over Cleveland and the winning manager was Leo Durocher and the losing manger was Al Lopez.Bet your buddies didn't know that one. How about the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold? mark McGwire 70th HR ball, 1998 HR Chase purchased by Todd McFarlane and sold for $3,005,000. Now I could go on forever, but the point is that this book is any awesome addition to any collection and allows you to expand your sports knowledge until no other can match your sport smarts.

5-0 out of 5 stars great gift book
Bought the book for a sport fun
Great cover
many stories inside to enlighten anyone life!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource on sports trivia
I love books like this.Jam-packed with facts, including sometimes little known facts. Sports trivia catches my attention. . . .

The ESPN Sports Almanac exemplifies the genre.

It begins with a look at the past year in sports. My favorite section in this part of the book is "Extra Points," weird things that happened. For example, John McEnroe, playing in a kind of "old-timers" match got thrown out of his match for going ballistic over a line call. I thought he'd mellowed?

Following are sections organized largely by sport: baseball, college football, pro football, college basketball, pro basketball, hockey, and a host of other topics (such as Halls of Fame, Olympic games, motor sports, and miscellaneous sports (such as bowling, chess, Westminster Kennel Club competition, Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race champs, and so on).

Take baseball as an illustration. You have team hitting and pitching statistics (Among Chicago White Sox hitters, Jermaine Dye had the highest average among those with 125 or more at bats [.292], while Bobby Jencks had the lowest ERA among Sox pitchers [2.63]). I could spend an entire evening porting over such figures. There are also box scores of the 2008 post-season games; World Series winners from 1903 onward; home run champions each year; batting champ each year; Cy Young Award winner; and so on and on and on.

Another feature is a listing of Halls of Fame. For instance, looking at the Hockey Hall of Fame, I see some of the players whom I watched on TV and listened to on radio in the 1960s (Stan Mikita, Jean Beliveau, Gump Worsley) as well as recalled some classic officials (Andy van Hellemond and Ray Scapinello). The Boxing Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame, Bowling Halls of Fame, and so on.

Anyhow, if you like sports statistics and trivia, this book will be a treasure for you.

Product Description
Featuring National Geographic's hallmark combination of stunning images, superb maps, authoritative narrative, and concise, penetrating analysis, the Almanac of American History has been carefully designed to offer its readers not just a wider and deeper understanding of our country's development, but also an inviting mix of fascinating facts and colorful graphics that make it a browser's delight.

After the Introduction by respected historian Hugh Ambrose and a special feature on how to use the Almanac's features most efficiently, the book is divided into four major parts, each exploring a different aspect of America's history. The first explores the continent's geology and geography to answer the fundamental question of how the vast, rich landscape shaped both our expanding society and our sense of ourselves. In Section 2, Milestones, twelve essays discuss how America evolved from a sparsely settled wilderness into the global leader it is today. Section 3 covers the major eras in America's history, beginning with the earliest Native Americans and closing with the first decade of a new millennium. Finally, a thematically organized section discusses such important topics asLeaders, Wars, Religion and Beliefs, and Presidents. An appendix features Milestone Documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, and more. A bibliography and a comprehensive index complete this indispensable reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice summary of historical events.
National Geographic seems to place some thought into the references they create; this edition of American history was no exception.

The pages are well-organized, easy to read and full of side-bar facts, commentaries and anecdotes that are easy to remember. The pages are also very engaging and entertain even my young child!

Overall: A+ --> a very good investment for our home library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to have
The National Geographic Almanac of American History is a good book to have.
Lots of detailed information and maps.
Sometimes, things need more explanation to get the whole message.

Overall, the book is really worth being on your bookshelf but,
saying that the universe began with aBIG BANG is disappointing of
the National Geographic. That is a meaning, not a scientific fact!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated reference book
The National Geographic Almanac of American History makes a wonderful reference book on American history if one is looking for one title that covers American history from prehistory to the present. The book is very user-friendly and well-organized, and is divided into the following:

Though I wouldn't say this book is exhaustive in its scope, it is wide and the work is enhanced by more than 200 illustrations and maps. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Loaded With Info
This book was an excellent read. it is loaded with tips for the beginner as well as advanced fisherman. the book discusses habits of bass on different bodies of water, which i found to be interesting and would be good for the fisherman who is used to fishing lakes and was going to fish rivers for the first time. weiss did a great job, as usual.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is full of information.
this book is loaded with bass knowledge chapter afer chapter.they make it easy to understand.i've been fishing for years but was learning from the 1st chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Okay - nothing new

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative easy read!
In my opinion, this is a very under-rated book.Weiss does a nice job of integrating biology, tactics, weather and technology in a concise informative format that is easy to read and digest. The three main black bass species are covered; Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is great for art reference as well as entertaining. Also informative about the series and what would have happened if it had continued. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes the Transformers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks
I highly recommend this book and it is jam packed with even more content than the first one.A lot of eastrer eggs for true fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars At least 17.5% better than the first one!
A must-have for fans of Transformers: Animated.Much like its predecessor, Vol. 1, this book is brilliantly funny, with tons of insight into the TF:A universe. It features great input from the creators of the series, and even peeks into the season 4 that might-have-been; including models of some of the toy designs that were never completed!A very fun read, with loads of fascinating and fun information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immersive and Well Crafted
Enjoying Transformers as more than just a toyline presents a staple diet of ups and downs. For years, we've been dealt constant sea changes across all manner of TF media, from animated series to comics to umpteen new attempts at continuity pinball. In the interests of full disclosure, I have to admit I've become rather jaded and sick of it all. I carry a great G1 bias from having grown up in the era, but I try to keep an open mind. Beast Wars felt fresh and new to me, while Beast Machines seemed meandering and cold. Since then, a gradual snowballing of TF products and interest coupled with numerous miasmatic live action movie tie-ins have made the world of TF media seem like a rotating wasteland of moving targets and hit-or-miss opportunities. Transformers: Animated really changed all that for me, and I really believe that Transformers Animated: The Allspark Almanac 2 (AA2) is perhaps the best literary tribute the show (and toyline, actually) could ever ask for. By that token, it's even more well-crafted and enjoyable than the first volume.

I realize talking up this book in such a forum is probably like preaching to the choir. Nevertheless, I found myself reading it today, realizing that there must be some folks out there who wouldn't like it, while maybe assuming said individuals would already carry such predispositions based on extant displeasure with the Animated concept. Be that as it may, this is the best Transformers book I can remember buying in recent memory. I try to recall the enjoyment I received from books like the Ultimate Guide and the various Generations books, but in doing so I can't associate such tomes with the obvious, evident, ever-loving joy of the concept that has gone into AA2. Jim Sorenson and Bill Forster have done the Animated concept justice, to be sure, but their means of doing so in AA2 are more a celebratory sustainment of the mythos than a compendium of it. I almost have to take issue with authors' use of the term "Almanac," because it seems so limiting in terms of the highly novel and creative content that comprises the book. Maybe "bible" would've sounded too dogmatic, and "encyclopedia" seemed too pedestrian; maybe the fact that I'm even prone to question the title indicates how effective the book is at what it does and what it hopes to represent - "a rose by any other name," as has been said.

Like the first volume, AA2 is well produced, technically well-written, and so jam-packed full of information it is almost hard to take in. It begs the reader to move one step inward with each immersive page, and that's a good thing, because there is so much to see. While the story and characters are the primary terrain features that dot the landscape of the book, there are also fascinating insights into the production, design, and overall creative processes that fueled both the Animated toyline and television series. The amount of effort and actual research that have gone into it almost make me embarrassed for paying so little. There are scores of $200.00 textbooks on the market with less rigorous attention to detail.

Make no mistake, this is not "just another Transformers book" that is either worth your fifteen bucks or not worth it. Like its predecessor (the great but not-nearly-as-great Transformers Animated: The Allspark Almanac vol. 1), AA2 is a paean not only to Transformers: Animated, but to the greater corpus of Transformers Fandom. It succeeds in a way no other TF books ever really have, be they convention or mainstream, comics or prose, in drawing together what "we" as fans like in a manner that is neither hamfisted nor pandering. Like Animated itself, it masterfully weaves the world of the gimmicky in-joke with that of a sensitive attention to character, and welds nostalgia and adoration together without losing a sense of proportion. This is, after all, just a fun book about silly robots from another planet. You never lose that sense of fun and leisure in the book, but you also never get the feeling that the lightness of its content has to do with the density of its information. It's hard to compile, compel, and be comedic at the same time, but this book does it - the authors do it, in spades.

If I were you, I'd buy this book, even if you didn't like Transformers: Animated. At the very least, it can show you that in a wasteland of Transformers media, you should run toward an oasis when it presents itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Fan'tastic.
Transformers Animated was one of the best iteration of the Transformers brand not just a great tv series but also the quality of the toys that were made and there hasn't been anything better since. I have a 3 year old boy and a 2 year old girl who jump into dance and song when they hear the opening credits. Our collection of Transformers Animated figurines has been collecting dust until I received the new Almanac which sparked renewed interest in Transformers Animated in my son who's now playing with his Bulkhead and asking 'Where's the Headmaster?'.

Now about the Almanac, the best parts for me were the bits about actually making the series, the concept toys that were never made and then what could have been for season 4. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Always a Good Choice
You really can't go wrong buying an almanac of any kind for an any-occasion present. Most people like trivia, fun facts, and reading something easy.

3-0 out of 5 stars The print is so small
It is the Almanac, how bad can it be?It is just that the print is so small. I bought it for my father who can only see out of one eye, they do not have large print available.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Facts Stuffed into One Book
This Book of Facts concentrates on events in America during 2007. They mostly use small type that is hard to read. Page 7 discusses "The Almanac in the Internet Age" and mentions `Wikipedia' as a source that is not solidly reliable as to facts. That is also true of books, written by people with their outlook or bias. Do not depend on any sole source. The information in this book is a list of facts that may obscure the truth. "State Government" on page 442 lists facts about each state. Note how many state legislatures meet annually, not in continual meeting. [Does that explain some of the problems in NJ?] This list does not tell about the level of democracy (the relative strength of the Legislature and Executive, whether judges are elected or appointed, laws like I&R, etc.).

"Crime" lists the crime rates by region and state. The District of Columbia has 26.1 murders per 100,000 people. Next is Lousiana with a 12.4 rate; Texas (5.9) and Oklahoma (5.8) are much less. Is this due to the temperature or other physical factors? States near the cooler Canadian border have much lower rates: Maine (1.7), Vermont (1.9), New Hampshire (1.0). What about economics? South Dakota has 1.2, North Dakota has 1.3, Nebraska has 2.8. There is no mention of Gun Control Laws in each state. The Suicide Rate exceeds most murder rates (page 162). The chart on "Alcohol Use by 8th and 12th Graders" comes from groups that may have a special interest for their statistics. They are not divided by region or state. Does this correlate to crimes like murder?

"Taxes" on page 381 lists rates for the Federal Income Tax and for State Governments. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not have state income taxes. The median income for each state is not listed here. Some states have a flat rate, most have a progressive rate, and a few only tax interest and dividends (New Hampshire, Tennessee). There is no list of sales taxes by state. State gasoline taxes are on page 77. Wyoming has the most registered motor vehicles per population, Colorado the least. Colorado leads in gallons of fuel used per registered vehicles. There is a list of US towns with ZIP and Area Codes on pages 605 to 638, followed by the Populations and Areas of Counties and States.

The quality of the information in this book varies. A listing of names and dates can hide the reality behind the facts. But this book is a start to researching something. An "almanac" is a book containing a yearly calendar of days, weeks, months with the rising and setting of the sun and moon, changes of the moon, eclipses, hours of full tides, church festivals, and other useful information. Its not just a listing of unconnected facts.
