3-0 out of 5 stars good, not quite what i was expecting
This book was pretty good and I'm glad I read it.But it wasn't really what I was looking for.Basically, it's a review of some of the basic math and physics behind energy.A few specific topics, like R-values, are covered in exhausting detail. There are a bunch of worksheets for calculating your heat loss and such, which take up a large part of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical for Real People
These days it seems that energy advice is available on every street corner--"turn down your thermostat", "caulk your house" or "buy a solar panel".Unfortunately, most of this "common sense" is either massively expensive or based on "cut back" and save. It's hardly inspiring or practical for real people.

This book restores my confidence in practical energy solutions. It's not "preachy" or "environmentalist"---it simply lays out how energy works and options to cut energy waste. It's easy to read, yet packed with information.I haven't seen technical writing this good in years.

The content is fairly evenly divided between discussions on preventing energy loss, recapturing lost energy, and obtaining "free" energy. The explanations are lucid, logical and cover the major energy options. The book also includes worksheets for calculating energy use in your own home.

Overall, what I appreciate most is this book doesn't preach/promote a specific energy solution.Instead it simply explains the options and lets you decide what will give you the most gain for your specific house/lifestyle.Once you read this book I guarantee you won't think about energy the same way again. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars alternative energy?
I purchased this book in hopes of using it in a course I am teaching on alternative energies. If I could rip out the first 30 pages and cross off a few sentences in the remaining pages the book would be a good resource for students to understand alternative energy. However, with the first 30 pages in the book it is nothing more than a book written by Al Gore and all the left wing agendas that go with that. Chapters titled "Energy Addicts" and "Nuclear Power A Failed Promise" do not belong in a book that is supposed to be introducing the subject of alternative energy. Don't waste your money like I did on this book

5-0 out of 5 stars If only everybody would read this book -
- transition to a more sustainable energy production would be much easier. I bought this book(let) because it had nice graphics and was cheap. Maybe because of that I was thrilled to find such goldmine of explanation about energy technology. The text is very introductory, yet covers all the basic topics. As someone with a degree in energy technology and quite a bit of knowledge about alternative energy, I would say the book strikes a perfect balance between being correct and easy to read.

Once I read it, what I thought was nice graphics turned out to be stunning! The best I have ever seen in a book. All illustrations look very similar which elevates the overall impression of this little gem.

If you want to know a little about everything in energy technology, I cannot think of a better book than this one. I would highly recommend everyone with any amount of interest in energy technology to read this book.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the books in this series :-) ... Read more

Product Description

As this book makes clear, civilization cannot long continue to ride on an oil slick. Worldwide, many people have come to see dependence on coal, and especially on oil, not only as unsustainable, but as profoundly destabilizing, both environmentally and politically. While ever-increasing demands continue to be placed on "mainstream" energy sources, recurring attempts have been made to generate power in "alternative" ways.

After retracing some of these efforts, this succinct and historically informed volume explores the ongoing debate over alternative energy that gathered strength in the 20th century, showing how that debate mirrors larger attitudes toward energy and consumption. Like other volumes in this series, Alternative Energy is designed to provide material for student reports and debate arguments. It is an outstanding sourcebook for those interested in investigating the problems and prospects of alternative fuels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Perspective on the Environmental Movement
A few years ago some folks started asking the question, What Would Jesus Drive? I'm not sure how seriously the question was supposed to be taken, as it was part of a campaign to demonize SUVs and the gas-guzzling ways of the people who drive them, but author Richard Gasaway has offered his answer to this question, and I don't think it matters what kind of car it is, as long as it is powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

This book approaches the environmental movement from the unique perspective of Christians seeking to act as stewards of God's creation. He calls for the perceived conflict on this issue between left and right to be ignored in favor of doing what is right for the planet and what is right in God's eyes, regardless of one's political affiliation. I think this is an important point, and one that does not receive much attention. The debate is always framed in the media as left versus right, and those on the right, who have not taken the time to educate themselves, assume (wrongly) that because Al Gore advocates it, it must be wrong.

The author does a great job in this book of appealing to this demographic, and laying out a case for stewardship that transcends politics. He covers all aspects of the movement, from pursuing alternative energy sources, to lessening our dependence on foreign energy for national security reasons, to the environmental impact of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. But he keeps coming back to hydrogen as the clean solution to our dirty addiction to oil -- and that cleanliness is next to godliness.

An Inconvenient Purpose carves out a well-defined niche for Christians in the environmental movement, and acknowledges their obligation to participate, it tackles the complicated issues involved in very accessible layman's terms, all while offering an optimistic view of the future and the path we should all be following.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Author
They tickle. They snore. They are great cooks. They give bundles of love. And they are adored by their littlest relatives. There's something very special about a grandmother!

Why Does Grandma Have a Wibble? celebrates the love, humor and mysteries of a grandmother in an Art Linkletter "Kids Say the Darndest Things" style. From "Do you change your socks every day?" to "I love it when she holds my hand," the more than 450 youthful observations by children ages 4-12 that fill these pages are timeless and most likely are ones that your own grandchild would ask you or tell you--if given the chance. Whether you're new to the "Grandmother Club" or you're a seasoned veteran, you will find these pages filled with equal parts of laughter and tears.

The author was inspired to compile this book when her seven year old son, Noah, gently admired the loose skin on his grandmother's neck and said: "Grandma, I like your wibble. Mom, why does Grandma have a wibble?"

    Product Description

Due to the mounting demand for energy and increasing population of the world, switching from nonrenewable fossil fuels to other energy sources is not an option—it is a necessity. Focusing on a cost-effective option for the generation of electricity, Wind Energy: Renewable Energy and the Environment covers all facets of wind energy and wind turbines.

The book begins by outlining the history of wind energy, before providing reasons to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. After examining the characteristics of wind, such as shear, power potential, and turbulence, it discusses the measurement and siting of individual wind turbines and wind farms. The text then presents the aerodynamics, operation, control, applications, and types of wind turbines. The author also describes the design of wind turbines and system performance for single wind turbines, water pumping, village systems, and wind farms. In addition, he explores the wind industry from its inception in the 1970s to today as well as the political and economic factors regarding the adoption of wind as an energy source.

Since energy cannot be created nor destroyed—only transformed to another form—we are not encountering an energy crisis. Rather, we face an energy dilemma in the use of finite energy resources and their effects on the environment, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels. Wind Energy explores one of the most economical solutions to alleviate our energy problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview - would have preferred more design content
I think this book has a good overview of wind energy and some of the basic considerations when it comes to designing wind turbines. As an engineering student researching wind turbines, I personally would have liked to see more content on design instead of wind resource and siting.Having said that, the book is meant as an overview intro book, so it contains exactly what is says it does.

If you are interested in much more technical content and wind turbine design, I highly suggest The Wind Energy Handbook, by Burton, Sharpe, Jenkins, and Bossanyi.Depending on how technical you are, it may be much more than you're looking for.

Even though I haven't done any yet, I do like that this book includes end-of-chapter problems. This is beneficial if a course on wind energy required this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars wind energy: Renewal energy and the environment
A very practical and readable book. A more appropriate title for the book would be 'Applied Wind Energy Engineering for Commercial Applications'.Takes a systems approach and does it well. The entire book is in metric units. The chapter on electrical and electronics for wind energy systems is rather limited. A more detailed discussion on control systems would add value to the book. A detailed discussion on wind energy storage systems would be helpful. An undergrauate degree in mechanical engineering with exposure to electrical engineering is desirable in utilizing this book. This book provides opportunities for readers to make innovative contributions in the area of wind energy systems.Detailed bibliography is provided at the end of each chapter. Despite some of the shortcomings, this is a valuable addition to the library of any one entering the field of wind energy. ... Read more

Human survival depends on a continuing energy supply, but the need for ever-increasing amounts of energy poses a dilemma: How can we provide the benefits of energy to the population of the globe without damaging the environment, negatively affecting social stability, or threatening the well-being of future generations? The solution will lie in finding sustainable energy sources and more efficient means of converting and utilizing energy. This textbook is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as others who have an interest in exploring energy resource options and technologies with a view toward achieving sustainability. It clearly presents the trade-offs and uncertainties inherent in evaluating and choosing different energy options and provides a framework for assessing policy solutions.

Sustainable Energy includes illustrative examples, problems, references for further reading, and links to relevant Web sites. Outside the classroom, the book is a resource for government, industry, and nonprofit organizations. The first six chapters provide the tools for making informed energy choices. They examine the broader aspects of energy use, including resource estimation, environmental effects, and economic evaluations. Chapters 7-15 review the main energy sources of today and tomorrow, including fossil fuels, nuclear power, biomass, geothermal energy, hydropower, wind energy, and solar energy, examining their technologies, environmental impacts, and economics. The remaining chapters treat energy storage, transmission, and distribution; the electric power sector; transportation; industrial energy usage; commercial and residential buildings; and synergistic complex systems. Sustainable Energy addresses the challenges of integrating diverse factors and the importance for future generations of the energy choices we make today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really useful book
If you're a beginner or someone with more experience, this is the "one book" to purchase in the area of energy and sustainability.Useful, practical content at a level that allows you to refresh or build on your knowledge in the area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful reference, if a bit dated
I've been working in the energy field for the past few years, and this is one of the few references I've found that describes all of our energy options with real depth.Information is well organized and systematically laid out.The book is, as others have pointed out, unfortunately already outdated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated, horrible mess of a book
This just goes to show that even though you might have a dozen authors from MIT, they still can't manage to write a coherent, readable book. The organization of the book is horrible, with hardly any sub-sections and massive blocks of text--this makes it almost impossible to find the information you're looking for without digging through the index. The ordering of the chapters is haphazard and they range in quality from extremely basic to completely esoteric. I would strongly recommend against using this book if at all possible, as there are better written, more contemporary works available that address this subject.
