5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saving Information
The information in this book is LIFE SAVING!!!The Perfect Gene Diet addresses not only dietary intervention but also integrative measures such as stress management, exercise and relaxation techniques.I have decided to LIVE this lifestyel to not only benefit me, but also my husband and future family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition Inspiration
This is definitely NOT a fad diet. This book emphasizes lifestyle change (nutrition, exercise, diet, stress) and scientifically backs up why these changes are necessary and beneficial. It's a great, easy read. The information is so skillfully laid out, all that is left to do is for the reader to be ready to make some changes. If you have any chronic disease that has affected either you or someone else in your family, you have the power to change your health outcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars This really makes since
I love this book, it is not about a fade diet, it teaches you to eat healthy for life time, this make since to me how each person needs a different diet depending on your gene type.

5-0 out of 5 stars Key Lifestyle Changes = Health & Wellness For Life
Inspired to read the APO E Gene Diet book based on its mind/body/spirit approach and knowing my own genes (My father had Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease. My mom had cancer and currently has heart disease and many other ailments), I had already adopted an organic, healthy way of eating several years ago.The Perfect Gene Diet is an updated version with a moving foreword by Dr. Wayne Dyer.

This book/program has helped me to take my health to a new level. I did have my APO E gene tested and learned how to individualize my diet to prevent the chronic diseases my parents experience(d). Diet is only one part of the book; exercise is also another key aspect along with the mind/body/spirit connection.

The book outlines the ratios of fats/proteins/carbs per gene type. It also focuses on the type of fats & proteins each gene type should consume based on the gene type's ability to clear them.

I have the pleasure of being a patient of Pam McDonald, FNP, and am blessed my path led me to her. Meeting her has helped me increase my own physical health, and her guidance on the mind/body/spirit connection has brought a new level of peace in my life.Integrative medicine is what our future is all about.

The book addresses a customized lifestyle plan for each gene type desperately needed in our fast-food, convenience driven, and couch potato culture. Read the book, find out your APO E gene type and make these lifestyle changes so you, too, can live a long, healthy life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
Must read, so crazy (or not so crazy) that different people process food differently and eating the wrong diet for your gene type can affect your health! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive, uplifting, information.
This book is written thorough the eyes and emotions of individualcaregivers and patients. The stories are sensitive, uplifting, informativeand reflect the uniqueness that is so much a part of the ever changingtapestry of the individuals who have Alzheimer's Disease. What captured myattention was the creativity these caregivers used to cope, the developmentof strengths that were unexpected, and the sense of life and love andlaughter that occurred in spite of extreme conditions. The caregivers whocontributed to this book seemed to develop a sense of peace aboutthemselves and their loved ones as the illness progressed. It is importantfor caregivers to know, especially caregivers entering the early stages ofthis illness with a loved one, that peace and love can be a continuing partof the relationship even into the last stages. There aren't manypublications which tell you this and it's almost impossible to imagine ityourself as life begins to deteriorate.I highly recommend this reading. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Was sent a 10 yr old discarded library book to my surprise!
Was very dissapointed when I received a discarded 10 yr old library book which was probably free to the seller or one of those 25 cent buys at a library rummage sale.Seller probably made 10-20 times what they paid for it.It's so old that the information is usless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better for 1:1 interaction than groups
This gives a lot of ideas for 1:1 interaction for at home or long term situations. It is not as helpful for groups or an acute care setting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
This book is a thumb-nail reference for ideas to enrich the lives of those with Alzheimer's or other senile dementing disorders. However, as a professional therapist, I find the ideas rather involved. I believe these ideas are more appropriate for primary caregivers and family. As someone who visits ALFs, I'd have to have a HUGE bag of tricks to accomplish most of these activities (and each tailored to the individuals' pasts).

4-0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer's Actiities
An excellent resource for caregivers of Alzheimer patients. Not quite as good for workers in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars RECOMMEND BOOK FOR LOVED ONES TO UNDERSTAND DEMENTA AND ALZHIEMER PATIENT"S
I highly recommend this book. My sister lives in another state
and has dementia. I understand her depression and confusion now
that I read "THE 36 HOUR DAY."

5-0 out of 5 stars 36 Hour Day
My daughter first told me about this book. My wife and I have been
caring for her now deceased father who had Alzheimers, My Mom also has it, and is in a nursing facility. The information in this book is essential for anyone either caring for a loved one that has this devasting disease, or that knows someone who is. It is informative, timely, and concise. It is easy for the layperson to read and understand. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars For The Entire Family
When our family first learned that our Mother had Alzheimer disease, we were devastated. After we all read "The 36-Hour Day", there was a great deal of relief. Although Alzhemier and other dementing illnesses can seem catastrophic, this book reads like a freindly family doctor givng you straight forward, no-nonsense advice. It covers all aspects of dealing with the family member, from explaining just what dementia is and how it can appear, to how you can deal with it appropriately without losing your patience or embarrasing your family member. Medical help, daily care, medical problems, behavior, mood, legal issues, common compassion and basic 'rules of thumb' are thoroughly covered. Several "examples" of previous family incidents are mentioned with thoughts on how to address each and every one. Great care has been crafted into this book and I highly recommend it. You will feel better, thus making the family member you are helping feel better. ... Read more

Product Description
Alzheimer's has struck more than 4 million of the nation's elderly and is the most common form of mental degeneration. In Tangled Minds, Dr. Muriel R. Gillick convincingly demonstrates that confusion and loss of memory resulting from Alzheimer's, or in any form, is a disease known as dementia, and not an inevitable part of aging.Tangled Minds provides a comprehensive overview of dementia, its history, the politics of its fight for recognition, the research being done to discover its causes, and the treatments now being used to alleviate its symptoms. Weaving these details around the story of one Alzheimer's patient, Gillick provides both a human interest story and an analytical study. Clearly describing medical details while fully capturing the pain of dementia with compassionate insight, Tangled Minds is an invaluable resource for family, friends, caregivers, and professionals dealing with Alzheimer's and similar disorders. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars good information but difficult format
While I found the content of the information accurate the format of the author praising their own good decision making was tedious.I purchased the book expecting a more straight forward approach to the material and soon put the book down for others including "The 36-Hour Day" which was a better fit for my needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars a combined personal and professional review of Alzheimer's
I picked up this book while browzing the bookstore in an effort to makesense of the behavior my family was seeing in my 87 year old mother who hadhad a stroke (right brain) in 12/97.Having been told that she wassuffering from "vascular dementia", I proceeded to investigatewhat that really meant. Even my son, a physician, was not really clear onhow that differed from Alzheimer's.Dr. Gillick's book outlines a typicalcourse of dementia, from early to late stage using a fictional compositepatient drawn from her medical experience. She interstices this story withfactual material on legal, political, medical research, and cost issues.Ihave recommended this book to friends and colleagues interested in aging, particularly related to brain assaults. There is much good material inthis book even if the patient is not a diagnosed Alzheimer's sufferer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What you Need to Know andDid NotKnow Before
This book is a classic in its field. If you have ever known anyone with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or have worried if you will , at some future or near date, get it yourself or are mildly interested in what it is all about - this is a must book. Geared to the lay population (and professionals can learn a lot from it too) it is a fast, easy read chock full of information offered up on an appetizing way for a subject that we all want to distance ourselves from - but cannot and should not.Offering direct, hands-on hints to family members, it is a concrete guide that no other book I know of has provided. As two professionals who have specialized in the field of aging, few in psychology do, teach it and write about it, we suggest it to all our students and family members who come to us in despair and leave with hope.Dr. Lenore Powell has given us all a gift. We owe her much thanks. MarcellaBakur Weiner, Ph.D. andWilliam Weiner, Ph.D.
